I had two thoughts on what you mentioned. When John wrote "For Paul" did he mean the song was about him and John was missing his childhood friend. Maybe the "For Paul" was in hope that John wanted Paul to hear the demo and maybe work on it one day in the future with him.
I think the song was for and about Paul. Listen to the lyrics!
This seems to be the case with the final Beatles version of the song, BUT not with the original demo by Lennon:
[Verse 1]
I know it's true
It's all because of you
And if I make it through
It's all because of you[Chorus]
And now and then (Ah-ah)
If we must start again (Ah-ah)
Well, we will know for sure
That I love you[Verse 2]
I don't wanna lose you, oh no, no
Abuse you or confuse you
Oh no, no, sweet darlin'
But if you have to go (Go), away (Ah-ah-ah)
If you have to go, well you the reason [?][Chorus]
Now (Now) and then (And then)
I miss you (I miss you)
Oh, now (Now) and then (And then)
I want you to return to me
'Til you return to me

RE: Proposed "Nerd" Show
@yankeefan2
They did performed "Everybody out there" during the concerts 2014 too. We were very happy to hear it at least at the soundcheck in Amsterdam 2015. And he did there Alligator too!
I just took a quick look at Something New. I think it was the passage (from 40min 33) that I remembered:
Abe: "This record is gonna be fun to play live... this is one of the first times we found like wow gonna be great to play at top to bottom" -
RE: Setlists
that's a very cool update of the current setlist!
I would only change:- Something to All Things Must Pass, While my guitar gently weeps, or Friends to go
- Blackbird to Martha my dear, I Will or Mother nature's son.

RE: Proposed "Nerd" Show
@yankeefan2
I understand the arguments for a deeper cuts selection of songs from the 21st century. Such a show would definitely have its charm, especially as those songs would be ennobled with it! My wife and me would certainly be one of the first to buy tickets . On the other hand, it seems rather improbable that McCartney would feel the same way, considering what he is still playing at the moment... And then there is the factor of his band that a song like "Maxwells Silver Hammer" could work very well.
Btw: I would be interested to know which songs the band have rehearsed since 2002 and havn't yet been played live. There could be some surprises. I mean to remember Abe? saying in the documentary "Something New" that they rehearsed the entire NEW album... -
RE: Proposed "Nerd" Show
What's about 5 "deeper cuts" from every decade?! I could also need a little bit time to think about a list. These are my top 5 songs I would like to hear: ballroom dancing, with a little luck, dominos, i don't know, pretty boys
-
RE: Setlists
Yes! I also suspect that he means something like that at best. At the end it's like Cavern Club (2018) or Pappy & Harriet's (2016) with a somewhat more daring setlist like the surpirse gig's 1991.
-
RE: Setlists
One of these days, he is going to put on a "nerd show" to satisfy the deep fans
hopefully it will happen before it is completely too late. He would also finally have a reason for an official new and fresh concert album.
-
RE: Setlists
@njr I too.
but I would like to understand it on the psycholgical level. The contradiction of McCartney's huge musical ability and the meagre variations of the setlist (regardless of how Beatles song-heavy everything is... ) + the same old stories remains a mystery to me . What happened to songs like Night Before, Another Girl or Your Mother Should Know? Other permanent live songs could easily be replaced with this songs....
-
RE: Setlists
What is the reason for exchanging only three songs (Drive my car, Come on to me and New)? Especially with two concerts in one city, an alternative setlist should be a welcome change for all sides. I don't understand it at all, especially because the band has rehearsed enough songs over the years...
-
RE: Adelaide, Australia - Wed 18 Oct 2023 Confirmed
As a fan who loves the complete works, I can only join you once again. As already happened so often in the old setlist thread For me it was no surprise that there were no surprises this time. It's still the same tour. How should anything change when he hardly changes anything between the tour names ?
It's just a pity that he can't come up with a solution like yankeefan2 suggested. This would surely make many of us more willing to spend money for another concert visit. Another point that has been bothering me for a long time is the question of a new live album. If you look at all the official live albums, a new live album would be overdue... If you imagine that only the setlist reportoir between 2010 and 2023 is put together creatively and every solo/wings is included, it would be a respectable list:Another Day
Listen where what the man said
HiHiHi
Ram On
Venus and Mars/Rockshow
Wonderful Christmastime
Hope of Deliverane
On the way to work
Everybody out There
New
Save us
Queenie Eye
Temporary Secretary
Hope for the Future
Come On To Me
Confidante
Fuh You
Who CaresCome and get it
The Word, All You Need Is Love
Things We Said Today
Your Mother Shoud Know
Another Girl
Eight Days a WeekIf you add the Soundcheck, you'd have songs like
I Don't Know, Alligator, Bluebird.Everything has definitely not been played 100 times yet...
After "Good Evening New York City" there has been no new live album so far, he only needs to add Hey Jude, Get Back and co. to this list and something really varied would emerge without much magic. Absolutely worth visiting and buying as a live album.Otherwise, of course, something in the style of Unplugged or Cavern would be nice. But how realistic is that?

Just noticed that someone has posted a new reply to "You Gave Me The Answer" article. This is a guy who is complaining that the song "Yesterday" has been dropped from the Setlist because he used to sing "Yesterday" as a lullaby to his Daughter when she was 13. You can't please everybody (think Garden Party by Ricky Nelson). This response helps Paul's reply to his latest "You Gave Me the Answer" article.
Again, my reply to all of this is that Paul has played many, many Beatle songs many times. Isn't it fair for people to want to hear a small amount of his new songs over Beatle Songs. For Paul's legacy, it would be better in my opinion since he had a pretty successful career after the Beatles.
BJ, I just counted the songs from the concert last night and the breakdown is 22 Beatle songs, 6 Wings songs and 8 solo songs. (36 songs in total). This means that Paul is giving the first time fans basically 28 hits. Considering most artists only do 20-22 songs in their concerts that is plenty and there should be no complaints. It may sound like a broken record but all people like us are asking is to mix up those 8 solo songs better. Is it really wrong for people to want to hear 3 songs from his most recent album which was critically acclaimed and received Grammy nominations?
Ricky Nelson was right when he wrote "Garden Party", there is only so much you can play for the fans to please them. As an artist, you should be a little selfish and play some things you want. The problem IMO is Paul let's his ego/feeleings get hurt when crowd does not respond as much to solo /unknown songs. You would think that would not get to him and the adoration he gets for 3/4 of the concert would be enough.
Other artists who were part of a famous group don't play as much as Paul does from their famous group when they do concerts. For example, Sting is touring this year and out of 22 songs he plays, only 8 are from the Police. I get he is not the icon Paul is but he is not exactly "chopped liver". I saw Lindsay Buckingham awhile ago and out of 20 songs, he might have played 4 from his days with Fleetwood Mac. I am willing to bet that while people in the audience might have wished for a few more songs from the famous group of these two artists, they were still had a good time at the show.
Sadly, time is running out and at his age now Paul is not going to change his ways. It is a crying shame IMO that Paul has never fully embraced his solo legacy live but if it doesn't not bother him who am I do say anything? -lol
P.S. I sent you one more final PM update.
great arguments! I've got similar thoughts every time paul comes with this well known setlist structure from" tour" to "tour" since 2009.
Neil Young is a further expamle who performs WHAT HE LIKES. I visited 3 concerts from him and never saw significant people leaving the concerts... IMO the argument or better macca's nightmare that lot's leave his concert is nonesense considering ticket price and in connection of his from concerts 1975/76 , 1979, 1989-90 and 1993 and quite particularly the secret gigs 1991!
He said: "I’d like to do a whole show of new songs but that’s for the anoraks in the crowd,..." Whats wrong with that? He only needs to remember his own song "do it now" and start a new series of "secret gig 2.0" on the main markets (US and EU). Together with the right marketing I bet ticket will be sold faster than supposed...

I put also a statements there. I'm wondering about the timing of this articel. It would be interessting to know what brain, rusty, wix and abe thinks about that all. I mean to remember that abe told during the special "somthing new" that they rehearsed nearly the complete "NEW" album....

Why doesn't he performe people want peace + give peace as chance reprise now? I wish someone would asked him in an interview
Very good post Mr. Flaming Pie. His Solo Career has unfortunately taken a "Back Seat".
I love the man and he does give it his all as far as a full show. As I said on a previous Post, I would be happy with 3 songs from McCartney 3...Seize the Day, Find My Way and Slidin plus keeping "Women and Wives" in the Setlist. It was one of the few songs that he sung well.
isn't it crazy that were're asking for only a handfull songs....because an overworked setlist will never happens again following the logic of the last 10 touring years. A Setlist with 6+ songs from the current album feels like an alternate reality although macca did it in past. All albums at least from "Memory" till "Macca III" would be worth it.

RE: Set List critique
that's a very great list Bruce. I would fly around the world for such a setlist !!!
I wonder what would really happen if Paul performs beside his usual selection. Would the avarage crowd spend extended bathroom/beer breaks till the moment he perfomes only a few beatle songs? As we can see in the case of his concerts during 1970's there were alternative and sucessfully concerts...
My Dream Setlist would somethink like this:
01 The World Tonight
02 Every Present Past
03 Getting Closer
04 No Value
05 Uncle Albert
06 Despite repeated warning
07 Back Seat of my car
08 Hope of deliverance
09 Wanderlust
11 Put it there
12 And I love here
13 Martha my dear
14 Jenny Wren
15 Pipes of Peace
16 Dominoes
17 What you're doing
18 I don't know
19 Anyway
20 House of Wax
21 About You
22 My Brace Face
23 With a little Luck
24 Magical Mystery Tour
25 She loves you
26 I'll get you
27 Great Day
Encore:
28 Good Night Tonight
29 Sgt. Peppers lonely hearts club band
30 So Glad To See You Here

I know that some songs he cannot sing anymore but these are the songs that I think would be great to add:
Heart of the Country
Too Many People
I've had enough
Goodnight Tonight
Getting Closer
Silly Love Songs
Listen to What the man Said
Helen Wheels (I know he probably can't sing this)
My Brave Face
The World Tonight
ANYTHING off PRESS to Play!
Take It Away
No More Lonely Nights
Ballroom Dancing
Tug of War
Coming Up
On the Way
The weird stuff offf Driving Rain (not what he played in 2001-2002)
That Was Me
I don't Know
My Ever Present Past
Really, just shake it up.
adding 5-8 songs from this selection would change the current setlist to a real freshen up tour and I 'ld surely buy tickets for a further european concerts!

As Yankeefan, Bruce, Nancy and I have said countless times before...HERE WE GO AGAIN!
As we all know, 2019 begins the 2nd big phase of Paul's "Freshen Up" tour. Hopefully this phase will "truly" promote his 2018 highly successful Egypt Station album release. In March of this year, he starts with shows in South America. Then only a couple months later, he begins the huge USA segment of "Freshen Up" in New Orleans. Some of the shows I personally could attend because of their location would be:
Raleigh NC (May 27)
Greenville SC (May 30)
Lexington KY (June 1)
For me however, it all depends on the setlist we will see during the upcoming South America dates. If we basically see the same setlist that we saw in 2018 (including the rotation songs), I will not spend the money for sure. I say this considering I've seen Paul about 12 times since 1990. What I primarily want to see are "more Egypt Station" songs that I think are "realistic" given his age and that he skipped last year at the beginning of his announced "Freshen Up Tour". To do that, I wouldn't even mind if he dropped "Fuh You" and maybe "Come On To Me" from last years setlist. What I want to really see are any combination of the following:
I Don't Know
Happy With Youi
Confidante
People Want Peace
Hand In Hand
Dominoes
Back in Brazil
Do It Now
Caesar Rock
Hunt You Down/Naked/C-Link (would be great as a closer in my opinion)
_____________________________________________________________________
He doesn't have to do all of the above but at the very least, 4 or 5 of them. If I saw something like this, I would be at one of the above US shows in a heartbeat.
For the 2019 shows, Paul doesn't have the "we didn't have time to rehears them as a full band" excuse anymore. In 2018, he had a #1 album in many countries in the world and many of these new songs better fit his 2018/2019 voice than his older songs (Beatles and Wings). And to do a true "Freshen Up"tour, he needs to do a good smattering of his newest songs at the very least in my opinion. I don't want to see Paul and Band regurgitate the "same non-signature"songs that he can do in his sleep. This segment of the show would be for the "true fans" and not necessarily for the 1st or 2nd timers. They will be plenty happy with the real signature songs that understandably Paul has to play.
I have given up on the idea that Paul would dust off some of his best "Solo" songs that he has never done (e.g. Take it Away, Little Willow, Single Pigeon, Ever Present Past etc) but at the very least he should do a bunch of his latest songs from his #1Egypt Station Album. I will give him a "gentle" pass for doing just 3 Egypt Station songs last year (for the reason he gave) but if he continues in the same mode, I will just skip Paul in 2019. I hate to say it since I'm such a big fan, but to me continuing with basicially the same setlist would would be a smack in the face to the "real" fans.
I absolutly understand you or better feel in the same way. After reading the setlist I canceled my hotsoundpackage for krakow concert last year. I didn't regret my desicion but i regret that fans like us "are forced" to choose this kind of protest due to this sad setlist situation.
Pure Mccartney show from Tim Christensen demonstrates that even a setlist without any standard setlistsong works very well. On the other side McCartney could easy arrange a real new (freshen up) setlist with beatles/wings/solo songs because there are so many songs -never or at least not performed in while. Thinking about songs like: sgt. peppers lonely hearts club band, penny lane, your mother should know, martha my dear, what u're doing, a taste of honey, she loves you ... every night, uncle albert, too many people, single pigeon, bluebird, jet, call me back again, beware my love, with a little luck, cafe on the left bank, getting closer, so glad too see u here ... take it away, wanderlust (lower key), pipes of peace, no value, my brave face, put it there, hope of deliverance, ... I don't know, confidante, happy with you, dominos...
