      nigel.thrillington:

The Kampuchea concerts album that came out around that time, and has very similar performances with the "Last Flight" bootleg

Here it is, for those who haven't heard it

No doubt about availability of high quality footage from this show either:

This is a fantastic show!! The crowd goes absolutely nuts towards the end. Bits of it have been released, i.e. Coming Up (#1 single in US), Every Night on McCartney reissue, but I think it a complete remastered double CD would be a great addition to the catalogue. Maybe on the BttE deluxe if and when that ever happens?!? Any love here for this era/line-up?

i will believe it when i hear it...

Same here. I havn't forgotten how 'Off The Ground' was being described before its release as being "Paul's best album since the 'white album!" yeah, right :

That was a very fine album though, especially if you have "The Complete Works". It's one of his best albums in my opinion. Perhaps it was the return to an 'inky black' kind of writing and 'cleaner' production (as opposed to the conceptual grandeur of Abbey Road/Band On The Run, the lyrical/musical wackiness on many albums, the experimental stuff like Loup, Morse Moose and much of PtP, or the DIY nature of I and II - all of which I love by the way!) that prompted this comment?

      oobu24:

I just posted this in the other thread too... side by side conparison:

Published on Jun 27, 2013 Here we have the new Blu-ray of Rockshow side by side with a version from the McCartney Years DVD. The images and sounds are very different. I like the resolution of the Blu-ray, but the McCartney Years has much better audio( background vocals) and actually sounds like you are at a Wings concert. Please note: when the picture is highlighted, that is the souce of the audio. Bass drop-outs: two good examples of the defective audio on the Blu-ray, check out 4:09 and 4:23. There are many, but this should give you an example.

The McCartney Years has better picture too IMO, not so pale and washed out.

My Rockshow DVD arrived this morning. Beautifully presented in a book Very impressed and I can't wait to play it. Seen it before at the movies twice and on video. Great performances. Particularly like the sound quality of the remastered Rockshow and the picture is a lot brighter. Been waiting for this years.

That book is a nice surprise, a 32-page A5 hardback, a lot more than I was expecting from a single DVD release

Is the sound mix the same as the cinema version, i.e backing vocals buried in the mix?

No, it's miles better, if a little 'dry' and lacking ambience (a minor niggle). Crisp and detailed with lots of groovy Macca Rickenbacker bass , the vocals are clearly audible and sit well in the mix. I am listening in regular stereo, through a hi-fi, not 5.1 Dolby Digital or DTS. The audio on my VHS and laserdisc was appalling; I was never happy with it even when I used to play it back on high-end equipment.

My first thought when you said a "jittery picture and colour filtering" is that you either have a bad disc or you have a bad Blu-ray player. You might try updating your player software. Check your owner's manual. Unless you're saying the movie was shot like that? I don't recall people saying that about the theater showings.

No, I have been playing this on a standard DVD player through a 32" LED TV. No computer involved. The original for the most part definitely doesn't look like this! 35mm movie film doesn't look like this without being 'tweaked' on a computer workstation, the results of which you may or may not like. The jitter has to be an artifact of something going wrong at either the transfer, editing or post-production process, or perhaps all three On the same DVD player/TV I played Deep Purple's "Rises Over Japan/Phoenix Rising", Led Zeppelin's "The Song Remains The Same", Marc Bolan "Born To Boogie" - superb, faithful, dynamic discs ..that's what I was hoping for here.

    • Rockshow DVD/Blu-Ray - Your Thoughts

Here in the UK it's out today, the postman delivered it this morning via Amazon, opened it up and straight it went into the DVD player! Not quite what I was expecting, which was basically the 1981 movie with better sound and picture, this has been completely reassembled with loads of extra footage thrown in. I'm not completely certain about the jittery picture and and the colour filtering throughtout the disc - this is supposedly a transfer from original 35mm film(?!?) at times it looks as if it's a video file playing on a computer with graphics card that needs updating Don't want to be a Debbie Downer, but it is very different, and takes some getting used to if you've loved the original for years as I have. Of course, it is Wings live in 1976, great band, fabulous entertainment, and the extra shots are very nice to have, so I'm still pleased to have it.

    • RE: London Town/Back to the Egg: What if...?

      Cord:

I was always in awe how Paul McCartney released the perfect album at just the perfect time and the music he created gave me just the right fix, so to speak, that I needed. How I wish he could generate the same amount of albums now as he did then with usually an album per year. Thinking back, and yes, I was there in 1978, thinking London Town was the perfect summer album. What a relief from the relentless Disco craze pouring from the radio to hear a new McCartney classic, With A Little Luck. To my ears, he just kept getting better and better. As usual, the entire album was melodically beautiful, and original in every way, which has always been part of his gift. As for the album's not reaching number one at the time, there were probably many reasons, mostly having to do with the culture at the time, just as there have been since. Still, quality and originality of his musical gifts have never failed him. Back To The Egg was just as original the following year. I remember hearing Getting Closer for the first time on the car radio thinking it sounded just like a brand new Beatles song. When I first played the album I thought 'this is the album of all albums, how will he ever be able to top this'? Well, of course, he did, and has been with each new studio album ever since - after all, any new McCartney song, with its freshness and originality is naturally going to top the previous - that's what makes Paul McCartney great - he can do that. It's a gift!
