    • RE: Plains of Abraham, Quebec, Canada - July 23rd - ARCHIVE

I just heard on CBC News that Paul McCartney will be offering free tickets to the survivors of the Quebec town of Lac-Megantic to attend his Quebec City concert. For those who do not know the community of Lac-Megantic on June 6 was devastated by explosions preceded by derailment of a train carrying oil. At this time I believe 42 citizens of the town have lost their lives with many still missing. It's great to see Paul try and help the small town through the power of music! Also, an interview of Paul McCartney will be airing in Canada on CBC at 7 pm Eastern Time.

Please excuse my ignorance but I was wondering, why does Paul always play Mull of Kintyre when he comes to Canada?

Answers given are certainly correct but this brings up a "pet pieve" that I have about Paul not playing Mull of Kintyre in the US. Mull of Kintyre, in my opinion, is truly one of Paul's "signature songs". The song is so great (lyrics and melody) that it should be played at practicallly every Paul gig (just like Blackbird, Yesterday, Hey Jude, Let It Be etc) no matter what country he is in. Yes, it didn't become a hit in the US but that is because the idiotic US radio programmers at the time chose to play the B side (Girls School) instead. That's the only reason it didn't become a massive hit. Basically no one in the US heard it. I believe that if Paul would have sang Mull consistently on every tour, it would have the same status in the US as his famous Beatles' songs. Mull of Kintyre is that good! And judging by the U-tube clips I have seen, Paul still can do a very good job vocally on Mull. I'm hoping that he does Mull in Washington DC (my next show) but I don't have my hopes up judging by the last recent tours. Anyway, I'm very happy for all the people in Canada that get to hear it.

Thanks for your happiness for us here in the Great White North that get to hear Paul McCartney perform "Mull of Kintyre" when he performs in Ontario or in our Maritimes. I completely agree with you that Paul should play "Mull of Kintyre" more as it would become as legendary in his live shows as that of his greatest songs in his canon, like that of "Yesterday," "Hey Jude," "Let it Be," "Band on the Run" and many, many more. That said, I hope one day you are able to travel up to a McCartney concert in Toronto or maybe again in Ottawa and see "Mull of Kintyre." My home province of Ontario is a beautiful place with a lot to see and experience. To increase the profile of "Mull of Kintyre" Paul should release a compilation CD of all of the one off songs he's performed at various gigs over the past decade plus with his current touring band! An album compiling "Mull of Kintyre" from Toronto or Ottawa, "Michelle" from Quebec City or Montreal or Ottawa, a "Hippie Hippie Shake" and "In Liverpool" from Liverpool, "Cosmically Conscious" from NYC, "Hitch Hike" from Detroit, "Cut Me Some Slack" from NYC, "Midnight Special" from bonnaroo and so on.

It is because of Canada's Scottish heritage outside of Quebec. Michelle normally is reserved for Quebec so it was unusual for both to be played.

Agreed, that is the reason Paul McCartney performs "Mull of Kintyre" in Canada. The Ottawa crowd was lucky though as they not only got "Mull of Kintyre for the Anglophones in the Canadian Capital Region, they also got "Michelle" for the Francophone in the region. It felt like a hybrid of a Toronto concert with "Mull of Kintyre" for the English speaking fans and a Montreal/Quebec City concert with "Michelle" for the French speaking fans! Though don't tell the Ottawa fans it was had influences of a Toronto Paul gig, they may boo! It was so funny that the eighty-one year old lady that came up to on stage to hug Paul in the encore in between "Hi, Hi, Hi" and "Get Back." She told Paul on the microphone she is from Toronto and a good chunk of the crowd booed! Paul told those who booed "You're bad people!" Then he said "She's from Ottawa!"

Also Paul McCartney performed the original "Happy Birthday" (also known as "Happy Birthday to You") written in 1893 by Patti & Mildred J. Hill for Ringo Starr's birthday after "Maybe I'm Amazed" and before "I've Just Seen a Face." I was surprised that Paul wouldn't have done his "Birthday" instead. I am guessing he choose not to because he added both "Michelle" for the Francophone and "Mull of Kintyre" for the Anglophones in the Ottawa crowd. Due to the addition of all three of those songs and including the Jimi Hendrix "Foxey Lady" jam at the end of "Let Me Roll It," that was the most songs I've ever seen McCartney perform at one concert 42!

I agree with you mcdee, who would have imagined that we would be seeing the Stones and McCartney in the same summer? I don't know when or if this will happen again. This has really made my year

I can't recall if it was in the same season, say summer, but this is the fourth time I have seen Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones in the same year, 2002, 2005, 2012 (at the same gig 12.12.12.) and 2013.

Going to bonnaroo for the 10th time was worth it just to hear Paul McCartney cover Midnight Special! I waited in the pit line on the stage right/crowd left side before Wilco got on stage and just made it into the pit. The fans in there were fantastic during McCartney's set! It was the closest I have ever been to see McCartney in the 13 times I have seen him live thus far. And the next day I started bonnaroo with Paul's son James McCartney which was a lot of fun to see the son the day after his father. James covered Neil Young's Old Man in his set.

Mull of Kintyre would be awesome, and I was hoping he might do Birthday (is that part of his set-list?) because the concert falls on Ringo's b-day, he might dedicate it to him?

I completely agree "Birthday" would be great to hear on Ringo Starr's birthday! It would also be great to hear "Mull of Kintyre" again!

    • RE: Bonnaroo Festival, Manchester TN, 14th June 2013 - ARCHIVE

This week I will be attending my tenth bonnaroo music festival (I missed 2006 and 2012) and I am so glad I will be seeing Paul McCartney for the thirteenth time at my favorite music festival. Does anyone think McCartney will surprise us with a rare song that originated from the region by an artist from the state of Tennessee? One of many Carl Perkins' songs like "Matchbox" or "Sure to Fall (In Love With You)" or "Movie Magg" or Arthur Crudup's "That's Alright" made famous by Elvis Presley? Bonnaroo isn't a regular tour date so I hope to see a one off from McCartney. And/or will McCartney bring out a special guest? His son James perhaps? Or Tom Petty? Or someone else that's performing at the festival?

Not sure if I'll make Bonnaroo, but I heard they clear out the pit after every act. The same people arent in there all day.

They clear out the pit, but they don't clear out the line. While some people behind you will probably go in front of you to get close to Wilco, you can wait for the pit all day.

This will be my 10th bonnaroo in the 12 years it has been around. They only started the pits in front of the What & Which Stages over the past few years. I have never used them as I'm always going to different stages throughout Centeroo to see all the amazing acts that I want to see. Though, if you are only there to see Paul McCartney you can likely stay around the line up area all day to get into the pit. I don't expect that you need to, but it's something you may do.

    • RE: Stones vs. Paul

The Beatles are the greatest band of all-time. That statement will get little argument here in this forum or anywhere else for that matter. So the Rolling Stones are behind the Beatles, but how far? The second greatest? Third? Fourth? Fifth? Somewhere likely between two and five would be my guess, trying to be objective about things. So my preference is and always would be to see Sir Paul McCartney over the Rolling Stones. Especially in my early years of seeing McCartney 2002 and 2005. Both years coincidentally I also saw the Rolling Stones. In recent years I have seen McCartney yearly between 2008-12, so it's been five years in a row going on six that I have seen Macca. Seeing McCartney 12 times since 2002 going on to 13 and 14. I have seen the Rolling Stones 10 times but that started in 1994 and stopped in 2005, until seeing the Stones at 12.12.12. coincidentally again with McCartney. So now I've seen the Stones 11 times going on 12. This year I will be seeing both the Rolling Stones in Toronto, ON and Paul McCartney in Manchester, TN and Ottawa, ON. All things being equal if they fell on the same day in my city then I would pick McCartney. But are all things equal? The Rolling Stones are touring the first time in five years, while McCartney has been touring for five straight years. The Rolling Stones are touring with Mick Taylor for the first time in 39 years. Also the Rolling Stones have had Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Charlie Watts together for 50 plus yeas and Ronnie Wood for 38 years. While McCartney has been touring with the same band for 11 years with no Ringo Starr or even Denny Laine. So I'm happy to be seeing both this year. And I do believe that no one has to make the choice because McCartney playing on the same day and in the same city as the Stones. Unless it's for budgetary reasons of not going to both, the choice does not have to be made. Besides, is it the 1960's where fans were silly enough to argue the Beatles vs. the Rolling Stones? There is enough time in a in a lifetime to enjoy both of these seminal groups. I love the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, just the Beatles more.

Paul McCartney at the Plains of Abraham this year is happening almost five years ago to the day of the last time he played there. July 20, 2008 to July 23, 2013. I would assume that since this time around the concert not being free will reduce the number of attendees. 285,000 fans in 2008, I wonder what the capacity for the event will be this time?

I started trying to get into capitaltickets.ca around 9:50 am and I got in around 10:02 am. I hope this give some perspective on how long it takes. I ended up with a pair in SEC 311 ROW A for the cheapest price level of $137.98 for the pair. I got cheap tickets this time as I am planning to also see Sir Paul McCartney at my favorite music festival of all-time, bonnaroo! Note to all that are going, the Ottawa RBC Royal Bank Bluesfest runs from July 4-14, 2013 in Lebreton Flats. I have lived in Ottawa in the past while I attended university and the Bluesfest is a good time. So if anyone wants to make a weekend out of your time in our nations capital check it out.

If Paul McCartney is in the New York City area this weekend it would be great if he was a surprise guest at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival at Madison Square Gardens on either Friday April 12th or Saturday April 13th.

I would be most thrilled with that as I'll be attending the show tomorrow night!! If it happens though (please!), I sincerely doubt it'd be any of the standards you mention as the crowd would riot: WMGGW, however, would be a *whole lot* of awesome. From your keyboard to Macca's brain, Timmy!

I have no idea where Macca is this weekend, why should I? I'm just saying it's a nice hope. I do agree with you if Macca did guest with Eric Clapton at Crossroads Guitar Festival 2013 they should play "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." It's by far the most fitting song that they could play together. Hell, even if McCartney doesn't guest with Clapton, he should play it.

Clapton guested recently on McCartney's 'Kisses on the Bottom' and McCartney returned the favour on Clapton's 'Old Sock' on the track "All of Me." It would be great if McCartney guested on "All of Me" or even more so if he guested on either "Something," "All Things Must Pass" or "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" as they did together for the Concert for George back in 2002.
