    • RE: Letter from John to Mrs. Harrison

@njr said in Letter from John to Mrs. Harrison:

Just found this letter from George to Bob Dylan in 1988:

I love it!... Travelling Wilburies were my favorite side-group of all-time.

Max Q were good... but the Wilburies.... that album was brilliant.

What a brilliant letter!... so personal, unlike all the mechanized cr#ap of today.

What a letter. George was obviously invested in what they were doing. Lots of references to the songs they were doing.... With Bob and Co.... he is quoting lyrics and doing pics.

George was excited! More than he had been for awhile. And he was the Team Captain.

The Wilburies was a great album... and George was the driving influence.... and I think he loved it!... He was the driving force on that wonderful album.

      Love it!

As I mentioned on one of my recent posts...a few of my favorite Solo Macca songs and performances ever were:
      Wanderlust
      Arrow Through Me
      No Other Baby

      A few others would be:
I Don't Know ( See the Soundcheck performance in Glasgow) on YouTube. Always thought this was one of Paul's best Solo songs ever. Just never understood why it was never on the actual Setlist on his last tour in favor of a crap song like Fuh You from the same album.

I Want to Come Home - from the Everybody's Fine Soundtrack. Just love this song

Vanilla Sky- I saw Paul perform this song live a of couple of times In Concert in Philadelphia. In hearing the Soundtrack version, I couldn't believe how much better the song sounded. This was one of these cases where the excellent and not overprodproduction"was so much better than Paul's Live version

Sing the Changes- This was just the opposite than Vanilla Sky. Here the Live version on the Good Evening New York City Album sounded even better than the studio Electric Arguments Studio version.

Bluebird - Live version on Rockshow and Wings Over America. This song on Band on the Run never quite gets the love it deserves and this "live" version is even better.

Why So Blue - Great extra track on the Deluxe Edition of Memory Almost Full.

Dominoes- Again one of Paul's Best Solo Songs ever
Should be better known and never on a Paul McCartney Setlist .

Arrow Through Me... Along with Goodnight Tonight, Daytime Nighttime Suffering, Baby's Request... a very underrated period of Paul's brilliance... And I've said it for years... So Glad to See You Here... so good, it could be the opening track to any world tour.... Underrated brilliance.

Vanilla Sky reminds me of a slowed down version of Biker Like An Icon.

On my previous post I gave the results on sales units sold on Egypt Station around September 2018 but I forgot to give the Sales Copies sold for McCartney 3. McCartney 3 sold even less at 107,000 copies around December 2020. The end result shows how light CD/Album sales have become compared to Paul's Heyday in the 70's. As I said, the total record industry has changed so much. Because of these changes, consumers aren't buying far less physical copies of CD's and Albums.

You mean they ARE buying far less…right?
So what #s does that put McCartney III and Egypt Station on the list?
And you keep forgetting you can edit your posts forever. Just click on the 3 dots at the bottom right of your post and click Edit. 😉

As an ardent McCartney fan, I have to say, I didn't buy Egypt Station, or McCartney 3, or Pure McCartney, or Kisses On The Bottom. I think he needs to stop "experimenting" ( McCartney 3) and get back to writing those traditional McCartney rockers and ballads. You must never break a winning formula. I think also, he's trying to attract a younger audience. Don't know why. But we must also address the "elephant in the room". Namely his voice. The great man's voice has gone!! And even though I have been a fan since 1963, I cannot spend £16 on a cd, by a singer that can't sing anymore. I cannot buy a cd, just because it's by Paul McCartney. No sir. Obviously, what everybody else does, with their own money, is their business. If any other 80yr old was making cds, and singing like Paul, then we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

Egypt Station is a great album, without having an all-standing track... although, Dominoes was pretty brilliant... McCartney 3 is a 6 out of 10 album, on a good day.... Kisses On the Bottom is the stuff that John surely would've ridiculed.... at the time... maybe, not since. Haven't bought it... No interest... The voice is shot, correct... but I have this naive perception where Paul, even at 80, can just conjure about a couple more rockers.... that tear his voice into the territory of Oh! Darling, Oh Woman Oh Why and Why Don't We do It in the Road....it'll hurt... but I think he can do it... I'd love it!

I will get myself in trouble.... but Paul was Wings.... I think Denny did a great job.... as in, he contributed three or four great songs... and he might have been great as a stabilizer... he might be underrated in that role... Again and Again and Again is a great song... I love it...I reckon Steve Holly was getting very popular... but c'mon... no Paul... No Wings.

      Don't forget, Children Children.

      Not bad, at all.

That being said, some really good songs co-written with Paul..... sung by Denny.. Deliver Your Children is great.... not one of my 'go to' songs at the time... but, as one gets older... I really like it.... very clever, underrated song. Back in the day when I was listening to music, as just a young fool kid, expecting every song on an album to be a "hit".... when songs seven and eight and eleven on an album were just as instrumental to the overall flavour of the album... no, this is just a great song that fills its place on the album perfectly.

Last night on Steve Harvey's New... Little Big Shots show, there was an 8 year old Latino young man who said that The Beatles were his favorite band! He went on to sing Blackbird and play it on the guitar. It was beautiful!!

I love it when the kids love their grandparents music!!

      This will blow your mind!

Wow!.... that did blow my mind! Terrific!!! How old is she?

Just an fyi, it’s Steve Holley and you neglected to mention the great lead guitarist Laurence Juber. He’s (to this day) phenomenal! I probably mentioned before that I’ve met them both several times irl - super nice guys! Even met their wives - Laurence’s (Hope) had a short stint on The Brady Bunch show when she was a young teen.

I'm pretty sure I know which one Hope was... I think she was Greg's girlfriend when Bobby let loose the frogs when they were at the drive-in. I might be wrong. And she played a couple of different roles. Never the same character. I can picture her, as she was then... I was just a kid, but I loved the Brady Bunch.

Sales for CHAOS is not that surprising IMO. While the album was critically acclaimed, it was not a very commercial album. The mood of the album for the most part was pretty somber. "Fine Line" was pretty good single IMO but I don't think it did that well.

RAM sales are surprising to me mainly because "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" was I believe a #1 single.

"Flaming Pie" started the trend of what would happen in the future for most McCartney albums. It hit the charts at #2 and sadly faded quickly. There was no single from the album that was a hit, "The World Tonight" did not even make the top 50 on the charts.

"Pure McCartney" was thrown together with little thought. If there is not one song from FITD on it, you know it was not well done. IMO people who buy music today are really not into "Greatest Hits" type packages anymore.

Don't get me started on Flaming Pie.... the opening single in Australia was 'Young Boy', when clearly.... clearly... well, in my humble view... "Beautiful Night" was one of the best songs he had ready to rip... still, one of my faves!!... and I think in Australia, he decided to release it as the third single... a wasted opportunity... Beautiful Night was one of the greatest songs he had released since 1982.

@b-j-conlee Only 2 of Paul’s albums sold worse than Pure McCartney. Who wants to guess which ones before looking at the link?

https://bestsellingalbums.org/artist/10186#:~:text=PAUL MCCARTNEY sold over 45%2C089%2C117,which sold over 7%2C000%2C000 copies .

I cheated, and looked.... I'm astounded that the Unplugged was so low... I loved that.... Kisses on the Bottom?.... Nah... still don't like it... Trying too hard, and forced..

That being said, I hope Denny (eventually) got due compensation for his contributions, which are probably seen as "unders". He deserves the accolades for his contribution.
