Also, we can probably assume that "From Me To You" is going to replace something in the acoustic band set. It SHOULD replace "Love Me Do" as they are months apart in release, but watch him take out "You Won't See Me" (my personal highlight of the acoustic band set) for it.

You're absolutely right. I knew I'd forget one...how'd I forget "Put it There"?!?

Oh I didn't even realize that. Heard him do Hope for the Future but not Everybody Out There. I know most of the audience probably wasn't familiar with Hope for the Future, but it took me by surprise - both that he actually played it and that it sounded great with the effects from Wix.

The biggest mistep in promoting "New" was NOT performing "I Can Bet". That would've tore it up live. Other than that, I'd say in retrospect, he made the best choices. The only other song played live was "On My Way To Work", in ALbany per the request of some members here...I believe "Alligator" and possibly "Appreciate" appeared at some soundchecks, but never onstage.

RE: Set List critique
I can hear the warble in my head now...Paul would not do those five songs much justice. Particularly the "RAM" songs...that was his vocal peak (imo)...anything live from that album would be a let down simply because of the current condition of his voice. The time to play "My Brave Face" was summer of 2017 when FITD was remastered, but he's never bothered to recognize that onstage...the faultering vocals would've been forgiveable in that instance. Same goes for "Tug of War" and "Pipes of Peace"...all five of those songs have very demanding (and high) vocal melodies. That's the big issue. He couldn't even sing the high notes in "Fuh You" and he JUST recorded that.
That's not to say there aren't options. The biggest softball of his solo career that he has stared past on the live stage would be "Take it Away". It was a moderate hit, casual macca solo fans know it, it's easy to sing a long to, sits low in the melodic register, is uptempo, AND appeases the hardcore fans as it has never been done. 2018 Sir Paul could still sing that one VERY well, live...but he won't.

RE: Set List critique
He's simply not going to do solo songs that he doesn't have a reason to promote and that weren't massive hits. I think the only exception in 21st century touring is "Temporary Secretary"...and that went over well...pretty terribly.

Good songs, but he will never do Mull of Kintyre at every concert!
It would go over a lot better than I think he thinks it would. I'm also not sure why he's okay with Wix sampling every other instrument under the sun, but heaven forbid there aren't authentic bagpipes on stage!

RE: Set List critique
Following the rubric set by RS13, I've filled one in. Mine sticks to Paul's present format moreso yet includes only 14 songs from the current setlist. I think a show like this would make every kind of fan happy. This setlist is only tailored as one that is promoting Egypt Station. That being said, I wish there were a wider array of solo songs, but I feel like this is the BEST case scenario of what PAul could do if only he'd take the time in rehearsals (paired with the confidence on stage) to do so. I missed the mark on the 10 Wings songs, clocking in at 8...too bad.lol The instrument changes follow the same sequence of the current show, staging stays the same (minus the damn mini stage) I also did more Beatles-Lennon than I'd like, but that's because Paul has been leaning that way for years now. Anyhow...thoughts?

RE: EGYPT STATION
I've listened for a week before sharing thoughts because on first take, I was a little disappointed. However, I think I was trying to make it into something it wasn't. Let's be realistic, without bashing the merrit of the songwriting and musicianship on these records, Flaming Pie ('97) through New ('13) pretty much all have the same sound, minus a few standalone tracks...and that's what I expected. However, this doesn't fit that box as cleanly. Sure, there are shades of albums past in the songwriting, but this record truly stands out as bold and unique in my opinion, out of Sir Paul's entire catalog (going back to '62). It's not my favorite for one strong reason...and it's something that has stopped good macca tunes from being GREAT macca tunes over the years...
LYRICS!!!
No one is higher on my list than Sir Paul, but he writes these beautiful melodies, solid harmonies, clever arrangements...and then phones in the lyric and makes it "meh". "Happy With You" would be a great tune if the lyrics weren't so...well...false. The verbage chosen indicates that Paul wasn't happy until he stopped partying and married Nancy. Really? The previous seventy years weren't filled with happiness? I'm not a fan.
I also think this record would be BETTER if "Fuh You" hadn't happened. This will probably never ever come up in an interview, but I honestly do not believe that Paul McCartney wrote that melody. It just doesn't sound or FEEL like Paul. It is textbook 21st century pop song writing. The intervals used in the line "on the niiiiight that I MET YOU" are statistically repeated in modern music to sell tracks. The production is also very uninspiring and contrary to the rest of the album. It doesn't fit AT all. Now take that for what you will. "Pet Sounds" is one of the greatest albums of all time...but "Sloop John B" simply doesn't fit!...
So the positives! "I Don't Know" sounds like a reheated leftover from "Chaos and Creation..."...but a damn good one at that. "Come On To Me" is the one that harkens back to that early 21st century Paul sound that I suggested most of the record abandons. But hey, it works. This could have easily been on New or MAF. "Who Cares" is an excellent track...it reminds me of the lyrical energy surrounding FITD & OTG tracks, and a very poignant topic to discuss. "Confidante" is a very close 2nd favorite track on the album for me. A very relatable topic for so many of Paul's listeners and an endearing tune for a distant friend, relative, lover...or guitar! "People Want Peace"could benefit from more guitar...Paul should have listened to "Confidante" before recording this one! What's a good peace anthem without an acoustic guitar chunking along? "Hand in Hand" and "Dominos" would've been cool to connect, like the album's closer. They compliment each otehr well in sequence.
"Back in Brazil"...what a beast of a track! I thought I'd hate this when I read it was an electronic tune. That's really a poor descriptor for it. I could totally hear this happening on "London Town" with Wings forty years earlier, yet it's so refreshing. Linda would've added a lot of character to this song. "Do it Now" is a very close 3rd favorite track (we're getting to No. 1!) and that's primarmily due to production...nice chord changes in their too. Those diminished variants add a George Harrison flavor that appears now and again in Paul's solo work. "Caesar Rock"...strong beat and nice groove...borderline filler material here. The "Hunt You Down..." closer is killer. A solid track from top to bottom and it truly is PURE McCartney. Yet my favorite out of the whole collection, will easily be "Despite Repeated Warnings". A ballsy yet respectful commentary on the state of the planet. And without even bringing the lyrics into discussion here, WOW...what an arrangement!?! Stellar work. I'll be so disappointed if this is never played on stage...yet, I'm sure I already know the answer to that question...
So on the live stage, I really wish Paul would do a few "Egypt Station" concerts. Just play the record live top to bottom. Knowing that will never happen, I think most of this album would st ill hold up well in the arena rock venue that PAul will be projecting it...with a few lesser options. Given the strength of other material, it would be best to avoid "Hand in Hand", "Dominos", "Caesar Rock", and "Do it Now". However, the other ten tracks could totally stand up on stage. "People Want Peace" would make a hell of an opener and "Despite Repeated Warnings" would likewise have the same impact as a closer. I'll chat about that more on the setlist thread...anyhow, EXCELLENT work, Sir Paul...

RE: 2018 Tour rehearsals in Quebec City
One would like to think that means 14 new songs are being considered. That doesn't mean they'll all make the cut. It could also mean there are like eight new songs and three slots that have two rotating songs or something like that...it coul dalso mean he was soundchecking and half of those are along the lines of "Matchbox"........

Hope NYC is in the cards for 2019
I would seriously doubt it after the over-saturation of shows in the fall of 2017, but perhaps one night somewhere is doable. Maybe return to a stadium?
I'm just speculating here, but I suspect there will be West Coast shows into July then a clean break of 2-3 weeks, and a 2nd leg in August/September down the east coast hitting a good mix of markets.

RE: THE 'FRESHEN UP' TOUR 2018
I suppose that means there will be more drips and draps to come. I'd love to finally see New Orleans but of course, that one hits mid-week still during the school year...and it would appear that he's heading further west as the summer carries on. Perhaps a trip to California is in the cards for July!

RE: Small Gig Speculation Thread
Well, voice was pretty rough...good crowd...good NEW songs...cool move with "From Me To You"... a damn shame to have those horns there, in NYC, and NOT do "Despite Repeated Warnings"...by far the standout track on Egypt Station after two listens.
-
RE: Small Gig Speculation Thread
I entered and have not received anything. Aren't these usually 24hrs in advance? We probably have a few hours of waiting to do still.
-
RE: 2018 Tour rehearsals in Quebec City
Weren't there rehearsals over the summer in the UK as well? I'd like to think that with a new tour name (especially one like freshen up) and a new album...that we would get about ten new songs (including new album cuts) in the set.

RE: THE 'FRESHEN UP' TOUR 2018
I can't believe how little buzz there is on here about these dates. The only one I can do per my schedule is Lexington, KY but I'm going to hold out. It seems to me like they announced this cluster now because they are weaker markets and want to give them time to sell. However, I would think that a new record and a late night apperance this week could mean more dates to come? I would be st unned if he came over for these five odd ball shows at the beginning of the summer and did nothing else. Also put my name in the hat for Friday night in NYC...we'll see!

I'm amazed at the support for the financial endeavors of billionaires we've never met!
I don't think any response I construct would thoughtfully launch the conversation in any new directions but ultimately I think the difference we have, is that I do not consider money to be the number one reason these guys perform. Maybe part of that is naive on my part because it pains me to think that the initial sole idol I've looked to in my own musical journey, is only in it for the money. Here's another comparison you'll probably scoff at: Brian Wilson. Most of Brian's recent tours have lost money, yet he contains. He was literally carried onstage in Canada a few nights ago after returning from back surgery. Yes, he's in the smaller venues too BUT, is anyone from the 60's rock scene considered as much or more of a songwriter legend than Paul McCartney? I think the two are certainly on even playing fields as far as legendary "status" goes. Now, Brian's voice is long since shot and his piano playing is minimum if een existent some nights yet he actively chooses to LOSE money to perform for his fans.
This isn't ALL about the dough.
I'd certainly love to see the data or article claiming that his recent tours have lost money
I cannot give you that in writing from an outside source.
Ok, fair enough. Thought you might be quoting a industry article or magazine article that could be pulled up. Would be interested in seeing it if true. The times I've seen Brian, the venues have been packed and meet and greet lines long so the statement rather surprised me
I agree, I was shocked when informed as well, perhaps it was an exaggeration on this person's part but they explained the laundry list of needs that Brian Wilson has off stage for his personal health when traveling that add up, in addition to the massive band he carries and the typically small venues he plays.

the Empire State Building observation deck
in front of Constitution Hall/ Liberty Bell Philadelphia
Alcatraz Prison Island
the Alamo
Coney Island boardwalk
Lincoln Memorial Washington DC
come on, join in, be creative
Given the long standing history and love of the city of New York, I can't believe Paul has never performed in Central Park. I'd like to see that one happen.
