Good Times Coming / Feel The Sun

lets be honest.[for a moment ] i dont think ive ever seen an interview with eric where he hasnt mentioned that he worked on a couple of 'mccartney albums]. perhaps not to the extent in which 'tom jones' namechecks his old buddy 'elvis' but certainly along those lines. i think 'eric' was a bit miffed about not being given the 'co producer' role on 'press to play'. maybe paul was a bit ruthless with him after getting what he needed but just ask george harrison what paul can be like when his 'art' is involved. in the studio paul has an idea of what he wants and does not allow sentiment or friendship get in the way of what he 'thinks' is right. [even if hes wrong,if you know what i mean].
i can hear him saying now 'And it really doesn't matter if I'm wrong I'm right'

who knows there might be some truth in it but i doubt it as i made the whole thing up in my devious little sarcastic mind.!
tut tut....please show a little more responsability as thats how rumours start.

it must have been a good little realistic lie to have fooled you! i might start making a few up on here for some fun.

Good Times Coming is supposed sound a bit Scritti Politti, Paul was a fan of that sound back then. But sadly, the production just isn't that summery, it sounds a bit cold and brittle, like most of the album. Strangehold is almost a song, just lacks that X factor. Talk More Talk is just inane gibberish, with Paul and Linda doing their 'funny' (not) voices, very unappealing. I think Paul lost his way a bit on this one, it also started the trend of having no top 10 hits on it, so to have Paul saying 'When did you last write a number one?' is a bit ironic really if true, 'When are you next having a number one, Paul?' he could have replied.

I LOVE Footprints just how it is!!! Funny really.
Its a lovely song (which has been unfairly neglected) with some nice 'sounds' on it but it just feels a bit too 'cluttered'......had it been performed with just acoustic guitar and vocal, it would have probably been viewed as a classic in the style of Blackbird or Jenny Wren.
Again, I'm gonna have to defend the production. It's a beautiful song, and the production is careful and tasteful while adventurous.
I agree Audi. I like the production on this one and it is my fav on the LP. Some of the album does sound a bit dated or over produced (i,e very 80's) but so does parts of Flowers. When you think about it though PTP compared to lots of other 80's stuff on the production side is quite tame

Your not telling me that Sgt Pepper doesn't sound dated.I think most albums can sound of there time really.I think simpler the better works for me.I think the McCartney album sounds as though it could have been recorded at home now. It's not Paul's strongest collection, but i think it's one of the best sounding albums of his career.

Always got room for your horn, LazyD.

actually this has turned into a nice thread for a change. we havent had to defend our mere existance for a change! keep it going 'audi' dear friend

I think some people are being selective when it comes to '80s production tricks. One of the biggest hits of the mid-'80s was Genesis' "Tonight Tonight Tonight" -- and its drum-programming practically reeks of the 1980s. Sometimes I wonder if the same people who knock Press to Play love that track.
-
Great to see this thread really took on a life of it?s own great when they take tangents, but staying around the Press album, well done funny banter and some interesting stuff about Eric Stewart I did not know.. this records growing on me for sure. and it does sound 80?s, but at the same time not totally sold out to the 80?s cheese, still some good rock guitar parts and really cool ideas in the songs. Some of the tracks could pass as REALLY good Huey Lewis I bet Paul was digging Huey And I like Pauls stereo drawings a lot in the gatefold. GTC/FTS is just a great vibe song I think. I need to commit some of the others better to memory, quite honestly ops:

it suddenly put me in a great mood after a long day!!

Nice insights into the process of recording Press to Play on this thread; if they be true, that is. Have to admit, Good Times Coming / Feel the Sun was always a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine - as was the whole album, when I first discovered it as an impressionable kid in the late Eighties / early Nineties. The thing the album generally lacks for me in retrospect is a little substance - though, as Lazy says, it's light-years ahead of his previous effort, Pipes of Peace. Another song I have to admit to liking on this album (80s production and all) is However Absurd; so shoot me.

Both Eric Stewart & Hugh Padgham are credited by Howard Sounes for having supplied him with info for his Fab book so i think we can assume their info is accurate. Their contributions don't appear to contradict each other anyway. Elvis Costello was another collaborator who got fed up with Paul and the way he works but thats for another album.
-
I've read that both John & Paul in their solo records would both keep going over & over songs adding more & more because they were unsure or in John's case not confident with the finished product.
