The ..2012.... Political thread

Well, they say a picture is worth a thousand words:
You must be kidding. Are there still people out there who don't know what the Supreme Court ruling was in this case? The court did not say Bush won the election. The question put to the court was, "Can Al Gore violate election law and have only a partial recount instead of a state-wide recount?" Gore wanted to ignore Florida election law and cherry pick which counties to recount. The court said, no, you have to follow the law. Recount all the votes or forget it. Some independent entities then took it upon themselves to see what would have happened if Gore had had his way, and were dismayed to find they couldn't count the votes to Gore's benefit. Bush was the winner by tiny margins every time. So, even if the court had decided in Gore's favor and allowed him his partial recount, Bush still would have won. Get over it. And what is this "52%" on the poster? Gore certainly didn't have 52% of the vote.
For the record, in Bush v. Gore, the U.S. Supreme Court 1) ruled 7-2 that the statewide recount that the Florida Supreme Court had ordered violated the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment because of inconsistencies in recount procedures applied in various venues across the state, 2) ruled 5-4 that the Florida Supreme Court had set December 12 as the date for the recount and no valid recount could occur by then. (The ruling on Bush v. Gore occurred that same day, 12/12/00.) The minority justices wanted to send the case back to the Florida Supreme Court and have them address what to do. This 5-4 ruling effectively ended the election. The US Supreme Court had issued an injunction to stop the recount three days earlier, by a 5-4 majority consisting of the same five judges. The reason for that injunction, according to the majority opinion written by Justice Scalia: "The counting of votes that are of questionable legality does in my view threaten irreparable harm to petitioner Bush, and to the country, by casting a cloud upon what he claims to be the legitimacy of his election. Count first, and rule upon legality afterwards, is not a recipe for producing election results that have the public acceptance democratic stability requires." The final vote count in the election: Bush 50,456,002 (47.87%) 271 electoral votes Gore 50,999,897 (48.38%) 266 electoral votes Nader 2,882,955 (2.74%) no electoral votes

fat and lazy republicans are now going to teach us how to have a health ethic and a work ethic...
I really don't get what you're talking about. It also seems inconsistent (to me, anyway) that you attach you're little peace and love message at the end of a posting in which you mock others as being "fat and lazy".

Town Hall Questioner To Obama
I'm a gainfully employed, middle-class American, as well. Only so much can be achieved in a two-year period when the first thing on the President's agenda was unf-cking all the previous President's f-ck-up. All accounts support that both stimulus packages saved the friggin' country. (Ya' know, the first one was on Bush's watch -- and ol' sh-it-for-brains-Palin championed it, by the way.) One would be naive to expect a vast, way-of-life improvement toc ome swiftly when the economy was nose-diving after eight years of Bush and a Republican-controlled Congress.

As somebody who has been actively trying for over ten years to emigrate from the US, I can tell you: it ain't that easy.
Oh.... where would you go? As a sidebar .... Have you read Emergency by Neil Strauss?
Pretty much anywhere in Europe. Given that I could speak pretty good Mandarin at one time, China might not be too bad - certainly appears that it is going to be a LOT more prosperous in the next few years.

Me thinks that a thread like this would not be allowed in China ... You are not allowed to speak your mind --- except that it is in only the strictest (most extreme) of all political correct terms The ruling class is always correct ... Simply said, "The grass is not always greener on the other side "

Indeed. I appreciate the humor of his comment, which was probably all it was, humor.

[Emphasis mine.] And you can in the US??? If you think so, I'm afraid you're still buying the bullshit. For a direct example: I belong to an organization called LEAP (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition) which consists of current and former Law Enforcement Officers, Judges, Prosecutors, Governors, and Civilian members like me. Some time back, Cincinnati was having their Police Convention, and LEAP had a booth - as they usually do at such events. Luck of the draw had their booth right by the Drug Enforcement Agency's booth, and the DEA was not happy about it. Every time the DEA trotted-out one of their inflated statistics or skewed statements, the LEAP guys refuted it. Apparently, the DEA complained, and LEAP was told after the first day that they were no longer welcome. It seems that LEAP's message directly contradicts the "Official Position." So, yeah, I guess the US has Free Speech ... as long as it doesn't contradict the Government's position. [Edit.] I thought maybe I'd include one of those "Skewed Statements" from the DEA: They claim that the Marijuana available today is "deadly" due to being a lot more potent. The LEAP guys (heroically refraining from the old Bronx Raspberry) calmly explained that one would have to smoke a joint the size of a Telephone pole in five minutes to ingest a fatal amount of THC. [End Edit.]

Pardon my skepticism, but can you give us a few more details about this incident? I can't find any mention of it, after searching the net (including LEAP's website). It sounds apocryphal. "Some time back, Cincinatti was having their police convention"? I'm not familar with police conventions, but why would a municipal police force have a convention for themselves? Are you referring to the Fraternal Order of Police? The last time i can find mention of their convention occurring Cincinnati is 1996, six years before LEAP was formed.

I fully understand your skepticism, and applaud it! I wish MORE people questioned what they're told and what they hear. It was actually on the LEAP website that I originally read the article - I think it was at least two years ago, maybe as much as three. I can't seem to find it right now, but will dig further and, if I can't find it, I'll contact somebody at LEAP for the linky.

Thanks. i always like hearing about things like this that don't get pciked up by the mainstream media. I had never even heard of LEAP until you brought them up.

Still looking, and nobody there, I guess, on the weekend. Maybe you'll enjoy this (hopefully) entertaining little Graphic Novel about the History of Prohibition while you wait: A Drug War Carol It DOES include references!

The US Representative from Ohio John Boehner demanded an apology from Sir Paul McCartney for a comment he made while accepting the George Gershwin Award. Paul did not mention George W Bush by name. Boehner is up for re-election and so far has ignored his opponent's request for a debate. John Boehner has never debated an opponent. There's an on line petition to persuade Boehner to a debate at http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/make-boehner-debate-justin-coussoule/

John Boehner is among the GOP's biggest hypocrites. There are numerous examples, but my favorite is him applying for and ACCEPTING funds from the Recovery Act that he and other Republicans slammed so badly. Those funds kept many firefighters, police officers and teachers in his state employed.

Remember when President Obama went toe-to-toe against the entire GOP Senate in that televised event back in February? He ably destroyed all of them with on-the-spot reponses from that extraordinary brain of his. So, if he wants to play it safe with teleprompters in more typical settings, why criticize that? We all know what happened when he let his lips fly loose on that Professor Henry Gates arrest-debacle.

"Conservative propoganda" That has become a redundant phrase these days.
