How Does Your Garden Grow?
-
Having tidied up my flower bed and planted that selection of bedding plants, the recent shower and sunny spells has seen loads of self seeded plantlets appearing, the product of last years bedding plants. May need some thinning out or even transposing when sturdy enough to stand that. But nonetheless a bonus. Martin

Planted this year's rose bush. It's called "Ebb Tide" & the roses are purple! Next projext is replacing the Japanese Dogwood that got creamed by that nasty hurricane several months ago with a Weeping Cherry tree. Also hubby has outsmarted our resident groundhog. Planted this year's veggie garden in big plastic containers!
-
I planted my impatiens this afternoon. Forgot to put up the garden flag. Will do that tomorrow. Not doing any more bedding plants as they increased the cost of water in this town by 40%.
-
cold and rain has slowed down the gardens this year. My rock roses are blooming.
-
Planted red, white & pink mini begonias in white swan planters, moss roses in green swan planter & gerbera daisies in teacup planter. Finally got brown eyed susans in flower bed. Groundhog was outsmarted - this year hubby planted tomatoes & other veggies in big planters & all are thriving!

I'm going to give up on my ambitions for a cricket pitch, or Wimbledon, lawn. I'm going to start growing rice.... Martin

So glad to hear that! I was on vaca for over 2 wks. and lost some of my blueberry bushes and annuals. Hubs only watered when I called and specifically asked (and not sure if he really did some of the time, lol).

With a little help from my friends..

Hoping we had some rain while we were away this week. Hate to come home to garden all brown & withered.

You can have some of ours... it's mid-July and the jet stream still lingers south of the UK bringing regular downpours of rain as low front after low front sweeps the country. I finally got a sunny window to mow the grass only to have the lawn beast die permanently on me. I spent about six hours stripping down the carburettor time and again, blowing, poking and generally cleaning it through to no avail. I sourced a catalogue return mower from a local warehouse for about half the current catalogue price - and just the same amount as paying a mower tech to try to revive the old beast, so I'm back on track - the new youngster has been assembled and, after several huffing and puffing sessions trying to fire it up, realised the spark plug lead was disconnected.. Since when the infant has behaved perfectly. I hope the neighbours can forgive the long grass on the public access areas I own and usually mow - I'll get that sorted this weekend - weather permitting.. Isn't that where we came in? Martin

"Lawn beast", "youngster" and "infant" are interesting ways of referring to a lawnmower! As for this weather: http://newsthump.com/2012/07/06/weather-could-lead-to-months-worth-of-tedious-conversations-in-just-24-hours/

Parts of the US are in such a draught the farmers have already pulled their crops of corn. No amount of water now would bring them back. Shame. Even cattle are without water with the ponds going dry. Last night on the news they said the price of everything will be up because of the lack of rain.

We finally got a few days of much needed rain. Also made a surprising discovery. There's a pretty red flowering shrub at one side of our house that we thought was a type of azalea. Was very pleasantly surprised to find tiny green & red apples growing for the first time ever! After much research, I found out that it's a miniature flowering ornamental apple shrub! Funny how after almost 9 years, apples decided to grow. Also, just discovered today that there is one stalk of corn growing in the middle of our back yard. I think the squirrels planted it! My hubby is going to mow it down when he mows the grass. Finally, we have 10 brand new baby ducklings in our yard! They are so cute & fuzzy!

It's really sad..all the work we put in this garden and it's almost all dead!! We went ahead and pulled all the onions haven't water the beans..they are a total loss, and the cucumber is not producing at all! That just leaves us with the tomatoes and the grapes and plums, neither are producing any fruit! This season has been a total loss..hoping for a better season next yr.

didn't you water anything LPBride? All I have is tomatoes but we;ve been watering every few days. Just the garden not the lawn. We already have some tomatoes.

Sure did..but it's just not the same as rain. We do have some tomatoes but most all the rest are just not producing! It's also the spot we planted..too much SUN!!

well, they *do* need the sun but yep...also water. This year has just been terrible. Mine have sooo many branches...they are about 4' tall but not that many tomatoes. I think it was too hot & not enough water but I usually get bunches of them more towards the end of Aug.
