What I'm doing 3.0 - Second Special Comeback

www.stageit.com Yet another thing I've got in mind. It's a place where you can do online concerts. You can broadcast your concert from anywhere, like from your own house. It's not a website with many visitors but it's growing. The concerts are very cheap, and you don't have to move. The musician also doesn't need any transport to get to the gig, or sleep and eat anywhere.... it has promise. One needs certain equipment for this. I'm kind of checking what I miss. Anyone can do soundchecks to test your audio and video. You can invite anyone for free to them. So maybe some of us will be there soon. Knowing me I'll do like 3 soundchecks before I'll perform, If I ever do!. The audience doesn't get heard, but read. They type in a chat instead of making noise.

Ok, I can plug the keyboard and the mic at the same time. And I never knew till today. Oh, my... I only need to know if my hardware and internet connection is enough. And, if all works OK, I'll need something like this, whatever you call it. Any recommendations for this?
-
It seems that meeting those tech requirements it's not so easy, the main problem here is the upload speed of the internet, it uses to be quite slow in Spain and it needs to be always higher than 1MB per second, for those live broadcastings. Maybe there's a way, I don't know. If not it will be possible in the future. I'm the meantime, I'm officially back. -I've played the keyboard again, while singing (I lost it and I did opera... : ) -I improvised at the piano, so I kind of write new things -I'm gonna plug the Fender right now!

and as a writer John could do it all. but he was a lot like Harry. So good they lost interest. it came too easy, and they got tired of the craftmanship of being songwriters. If you don't have something to say, then why are you doing it? that kind of thing. That never happened to Paul cause he loved making music so much, and that in itself is cool. thats why he's got the greatest catalogue. He'll never stop. some people say John dried up, whereas I say he had nothing left to say or prove. There was nothing driving him anymore, as a person. and he wasn't going to work for anyone. its a rebel thing. Paul's more the music maker. as I babble on and on...
great analysis, especially the second paragraph

More news: It seems I'm 100 % back. I have been singing this morning to most of the songs of a recent Queen + Adam Lambert show. And everything went fine, so I can sing like I used to. And also played guitar and piano as I used to... not better, only as I used to. And I've also improvised a little music as I used to. As for things that doesn't depend on me... that is not so easy... There is not much action now in the websites where musicians search musicians here, all that action could have been only for the start of the new year, that really happens in September, after the holidays, when projects use to get started here... As for online streaming concerts, I still don't know if I could meet the techno requirements, it depends of a lot of little things. I know there are some similar websites in Spain where, of course!, the requirements are not so high, if not nothing could be done.... but I still haven't found any. So, that's it, singing, playing, writing,,, looking forward to play somewhere, with someone or online or anything that is not just playing in my room and only my neighbours can hear it... (Online streams seem to have promise, I think that will get popular in the future, it's very 21st centurish. Any artist can reach a huge amount of people like that. And they don't to spend money on traveling, equipment... people doesn't need to spend so much money on tickets... Still some kind of advanced techno is needed so they can only get popular when most of the people uses that techno, so quality is like if you watch TV or so...)

ustream.tv, they're not demanding on the requirements, but they are on copyrights, they delete your account!. But no limit if one is playing stuff written by himself. Perhaps I'll do something there.

I've researched more about ustream.tv and stageit.com The first is free, anyone can see you performing without paying a thing. But few people watch concerts there anyway. Like less than 10 people per show... even if someone quite famous, stadium filler, is broadcasting for free is something like 500 watchers. So very few will watch any of us that way. Stageit seems more interesing, cause people that are not famous at all still have some audience, I don't know how many exactly, but dozens, it seems, and they pay! (and you can do covers, and play lots of times to the same audience) It seems a better option.

After some research, I've found out that there's no way I can have the kind of upload speed needed for stageit.com here and now. Maybe in some months or years but not now. I can be part of the audience, though.

So, I'm now forgeting about "online concerts". I'm now just keeping to a local bulletin board, who knows. Also thinking of cleaning up some old tracks of mine so I can submit them to Itunes and all that... Some noises here and there in some, I'll see what I can do... with the little help of Audacity.

Thanks Silvermoondog and Walliebaby I agree with you in a sense Ollie. I don't make John out to be the greatest artist ever, but I do think he had a knack for thinking outside the box, and for being expressive with his art. Very dynamic artist. I've always said, John and Paul were much more similar than they were different. But in art a small difference in attitude and style can completely skew the peice of work. Paul's 'beauty' was different from John's version of 'beauty'. but both respected great art, and enjoyed working with people they respected I think. are their love for eachother was a takes one to know one kind of thing I'm sure. anyway, Ollie, dug your rendition of There's A Place, slowed down on the piano, that was cool man. Great song. I wasn't happy you cut out the 'in my mind there's no sorrow...' parts, but hey I still liked what you did. but then what was that Yoko style guitar at the end? the parts didn't connect well for me. cool to hear though. I you know what I'd like to hear you try? Try a more swingy style song. like (because I'm into it and won't shut up about it) Fats Domino's Coquette. It seems your music never really goes to that sort of old school swingy style. that might be a fun thing to try for ya, just throwing out ideas like i do I'd like to hear you cover Coquette. I bet with your piano skills you could pull it off nicely. but do you have that swinging vocal timing swagger? thats the question.

I think John concept of art is showing how we are and Paul is more about how we should be or so. I didn't like the "in my mind there's no sorrow" when played that slow. So that was out. I liked to repeat the melody with guitar in that way... it surely different than the original, I wanted to change it. In the end it's almost another song. Hey, I've written several swingy songs. Not that Coquette style, but more like Sinatra style ooby-dooby, a bit like Paul's unreleased The Mist Of Central Park or Fly Me To The Moon. The problem of going out of my usual ways is that people don't believe I've written the stuff I show them. lol I've got song called "Slowly walking" or so... I've sang on the piano the song to some but didn't believe it was mine, it sounds very old fashioned. Like an old standard or so. The same happens to me with a Mozart-like little thing I wrote. I play the thing (piano instrumental) but people don't believe is mine. Even my sister thinks is something from Mozart not from Sanz. lol It's kind of a "composing impersonation", so I understand. But Mozart didn't write it. I mean, that's the problem I face when I go way out of my usual ways... I think I've got the vocal timing swagger, some of my fav karaoke numbers were New York New York, I've Got You Under My Skin... just for laughs but I could make it, people liked a lot. I tell you about what I'm planning to record in my next post.

(I know I'm being pretty contradictory about what I do but I can't help it. For instance, I have found now but maybe I could broadcast concerts through stageit.com, I did forget about it but I have received some mails from them saying some techno requirement are not so demanding as they seem to be, so now I wonder I again if my internet connection would be enough really, so here I am asking again about that to them... well...) Besides that, my plan now (that surely will be altered, lol) is about getting my music to digital distribution sales. It's a bit like signing a record company, you have to meet some standards, if not they won't be interested. Sound standards. So I need to clean my tracks out of noise. I've got 3 types of tracks: 1. A few (2 or 3) have perfect sound, no noise, so they're ok for that. 2. Some have some noise that I think I could remove with Audacity trying different things till I get the noise out. 3. Some tracks that I don't think that can be cleaned up at all. So, I must re-record them (like I did with I Want To Fly Away) And as I re-record some, it's very likely that I record some songs that I never recorded before. I've got 2 on my mind, and maybe I'll do that swingy thing too or that little Mozart-like thing, I don't know, something different to all the tracks cause it's quite easy for me to record them. That's kind of my plan, but life is what happens really, you know...
-
I've received a message from the concerts broadcast company and they say my connection will be enough if I download a certain software for broadcasting, so... I meet the standards! Now I need to buy many little things, also to make soundchecks, etc to make it happen. Maybe some kind of new problem will arise or so, I don't have a clue about when I will play there for the first time. As for if anyone is interested in performing that way... (a very 21st Century way...) you don't have to pay a thing for doing it. But you must have a lot of little things, so well, you must spent some money... then read all the stuff... find out the copyrights of a song.... There's lots of little details, in the end you're creating a concert ON YOUR OWN. Everything, from singing and playing, to the sound, the video, the legal stuff, the copyrights, the software, even the lights on the room and lots of little details... The part I like the less is the one about copyrights, like I do not know if I should contact Spain's copyrights companies or USA's ones, cause I'm performing in... Spain? or is the USA? or is it everywhere? lol... I guess I'll play stuff I'm very familiar with, for a start. Well, I'll play if I finally get everything sorted out.

as for that, I've found 2 things I recorded that are similar... this songs are older than rock and roll, go figure Blue Moon of Kentucky, the swagger is supposed to be in the end
Rags To Riches, for the piano, not for the guitar I've got another edit that is the same without the guitar... I didn''t even know I was bits of Oh Darling when I recorded, it was sort of natural for me doing that at the piano playing that in A. -

You 'get' that song, I can tell. Now don't take this criticism harshly or anything cause generally speaking my opinions can be a little left of center, but I think you sort of missed on the swingy nature of the Rags To Riches tune. and I think mainly its because of the piano performance. you need to hit that bass line more, almost cutting that piano track first, then do the vocals second, so you have the built in swing you can sing around. is that how you did it, or did you just play and sing it all at once? otherwise its good, just not the swing style you hear from say Elvis or Fats or the all time greats when they do a song in that style. Dude, not like I could do any better so good posting! as for the live on-line concert thing, thats not something I myself would be interested in. unless my music was somehow picked up by a record company and they wanted me to do it, then I'd do it obviously but its a cool idea, you should do it! I'd watch ya.

For most of the people the start of rock and roll is That's All Right Mama, but for me is Blue Moon Of Kentucky. I mean, the Elvis covers of those songs. Thank you. Well, I didn't tried to be swingy but kind of dramatic, more like Elvis did it live, only higher and not operatic. Audi posted long ago a link of Elvis doing it live and that inspired me to do it. I played piano then I sung vocals. I think it would be easier for me for some tracks if I recorded vocals and piano all at once, like in Blue Moon of Kentucky, where I'm kind of waiting for the piano chords to end.
-
Well, we're still far from the day I could do that little show but I'm already planning the setlist. Because there is no fun in all the tech details, the copyrights and all that, the fun is in the songs. Even if I finally will not do it... songs that are possible for my online concert: I think I'll only do covers. -Let It Be or Yesterday or Hey Jude -We Are The Champions or Bohemian Rhapsody (this one has too many chords but I like challenges..) -Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me -Piano Man and some of these -Rock And Roll (meant to be singing standing, not sitting, lol) -Blue Moon of Kentucky? -One Moment In Time? -Without You? -Great Balls Of Fire? -Mad World? -Stairway To Heaven? (not likely if I do Rock and Roll) -One (U2 not Metallica's :lol? -November Rain? suggestions and petitions are welcome, especially if you will watch the show...
-
Can't say that I'm terribly intrigued by that setlist, Ollie.
