what do you think of Dogs
-
I just read this advise in a coonhound group but it applies to any breed... this was about a dog chewing... ... I would also recommend using some "Cesar Milan" strategies. With your attitude and body language CLAIM what is yours. It can be very difficult, but try to calmly, quietly correct behaviors that are unwanted. A puppy or any new dog in the house is going to need a lot of supervision to learn the rules of the house. Just like with children, the more often and consistent the interaction with their pack leader the quicker they will learn. Of course, some puppies and some adult dogs are more challenging than others and will try to defeat you and be the leader of the pack. Confident, consistent, firm and quiet leadership can work wonders with any dog. The Dog Whisperer has his detractors but I have found that leadership works. I'm not always as good at being my dog's leader as I strive to be. But I regroup and we learn together. If you haven't read any books on canine body language that might be a great place to start. Little things like stopping a dog at the door for a sit before allowing them out. If you are going out too, then make sure you go first. When you KNOW that you are the leader your dog will know it too. Conversely, if you doubt your leadership you dog will rightfully fill the vacuum. Practice exercises like "leave it" and "drop it". In fact, practicing any type of training/discipline is a great way to bond, show leadership, expand your dog's intelligence and have FUN. And of course, dogs need a LOT of physical exercise so that they don't get bored and find devious way to channel their frustration and pent up energy. And I do really like the recommendation below about giving them their own toys with your scent on them. When my hound Jack first found me (he was a stray) he chewed a few of my bras and sneakers. Poor guy wanted to keep my scent in his nose when I would leave the house. That's flattering but they must learn an awful lot about how to live in a human home and still be made to feel secure in your love and leadership. Hang in there, Archie will respond to your love and leadership and reward you with love and devotion.

My Yorkie loves petite greenies bones. Every nite around 7:30, if she hasn't had her greenie, she runs to the cabinet & barks, then runs & jumps up on the sofa & barks & nips at hands until someone gets up & gives her a greenie!

If one is visually impaired they may bring their guide (seeing-eye) dog to a concert. At one of Paul's Citi Field concerts, sitting next to us was a visually impaired gentleman accompanied by his guide dog. The gentleman enjoyed the concert very much and as far as I could tell, so did his beautiful guiding companion.

A house without a dog (and several cats & even other pets) is just not a home. My doggie is such a wonderful companion.

I took my dog for a longer walk today .... because I had the day off from work ... and this meant more time to walk him and not have to be anywhere or do anything .... unless I wanted to do so ...... it is cooler outside and that is probably good for the dog ..... very enjoyable ..... he is walking so much better .... which makes the walk better for both of us It was a casual take it as it comes day off ..... I was glad to give the dog attention and just be there today I have taken him to a few training classes. There is only one or two things done during class ..... then I try to keep it going during the week. He has surprised me at how he is able to see the other dogs and seemingly do pretty well ..... we are required to keep a certain distance at this time ... it helps him to see many dogs and know that he is okay. It takes work .... but I like to see him improving with time ..... what I also like about the class is the small things ..... perhaps a few how and why(s) some dogs do things and how to work on behavior things etc .... techniques ..... because he is a rescue dog .... the person teaching the class has not used my dog as an example or to illustrate any training (other dogs in the class are used) The teacher knows a bit of his background and does not want to freak him out .... he has his moments when I do not know how he will react .... but I may treat such reactions different now .... that I have a few new options that may help ..... I think ... I hope. Some things take time and work .... what is really neat to me is something so simple as to see him "blending in" and looking natural at things. ( I think of how tough it was just to get him to walk a few houses away from mine and how it must have looked like I was forcing him to do something against his will. To how casual he looked today. I am glad that I have worked with him ..... tried to be patient and understanding ... and have put time into trying to make things like walking enjoyable (because I like to walk .... I hope my dog will like walking too)).
