LISTENING EVENTS-LA/NYC
-
The idea of all these Listening Parties - both private by invitation events for the trade and journalists and these new pre-launch publicity events announced now is to protect the music from piracy. Even at this late hour expect tight security at these listening parties - possibly requiring the handing in of phones etc to prevent recording of the music. The days when trade and journalists were sent preview copies are over as someone somewhere will inevitably "share" the music by way of mp3 files - and once that has happened the piracy goes viral within hours. Streaming on-line, even just to fans, would be captured and again lead to piracy. But we're counting down the days now, not long to wait..... Martin

Nope.

400 cars at a drive in and the album is played of FM transmittern no way they can keep people from recording it. You usually can pick up the fm transmissio. Just from being close to the venue.

I'll be going to the L.A. event on Sunday. Should be exciting!
-
How early for an evening preview, do you think people are going to line up?

I remember the "poor" sales of Fleetwood Mac's 'Tusk' was blamed because a radio station played the entire album shortly before it came out, & people had their tape recorders ready! There's always been a fine line between pre-marketing & impact on consumer behaviors. But with social technology today enabling much higher reach, that line gets even more uncertain.

I don't think it was so much that: Record companies had such ridiculous expectations in those days. If one album sold a gazillion copies, then the next one should sell a gazillion-billion. Tusk still sold in the millions, and expecting it to out-do Rumors was crazy. At the time, it was the top-selling album in history. People said Michael Jackson's Bad was a commercial failure because it didn't sell like Thriller did. Again, another album that became the top-selling album of all time. Same for INXS' X album -- because it sold around 8 million copies, as opposed to Kick's 22 million.

Just remember to place the speaker back on the pole before you drive away! Podgie (Man, I remember those "Early Days"!) Monkey

I am going to the event in NYC tomorrow! I am so excited!! I am from LA and I find it so funny that the event over there is at the Vineland Drive-In. I grew up really close to there and used to go to that drive-in when I was a kid. So my family is going to be going to that event tomorrow while I am going to the NYC event!

lol. I'm just happy that the theater is SO CLOSE to where I live! it's actually about 25 minutes east of Downtown LA. Usually everything's happening in Hollywood and I have to make the 1-1.5 hour long drive out there. I hope this event will make up for the whole queuing mess I dealt with at Hollywood Blvd last week! the last time I watched a movie here was almost exactly a year ago, and it was a lot of fun. very relaxed atmosphere! I had been planning my belated birthday party for Sunday night. luckily my friends are willing to put up with my inner fangirl and don't mind coming to the listening event with me.

Oh well the theater upgraded from speakers a few years ago

Clearly US cars are designed with Drive-In cinemas in mind. If I sat in my car and listened to the radio without the engine running my cars electrics would automatically shut the radio down after 15 minutes to protect the battery life. The only way to re-waken it would be to start the engine again. Enjoy yourselves tonight - hopefully there shouldn't be too many disappointments with this first come - first served approach. Who am I kidding?...... All The Best Martin

FM Radio? What will they think of next? I'm wondering if they will play half the songs, then have a break.
Man, I use to love the Drive-in. Podgie (meet ya at the snackbar) Monkey -
Make sure you don't have the Traffic Alerts feature switched on.. Or is that another uniquely British thing? Martin

It's British. BTW, Did they ever have Drive-Ins in England? I though it was an American thing. I remember some Drive-Ins even had speakers with heaters, for when it got cold. The windows use to always fog up. It was a cool time though. I don't think there are any around here anymore, just not profitable enough. I think there are still some up in New Hampshire. Podgie (usually it would get hot in the car, and it was tough to keep the windows open because of mosquitos) Monkey

No Drive-Ins here in the UK - we had to get in early to grab the back row seats of the cinema if we wanted to have a cuddle and kiss Martin
