'New' recording chronology

On a technical note, I should say that it's Hog Hill Mill, not just Hog Hill.
Good spot, I'll get that amended. Just spotted myself that in Paul's cd 'open letter' he states that 'On My Way To Work' was recorded at Air Lyndhurst although the recording credits in the cd booklet state that the song was recorded at Hog Hill Mill, Abbey Road studios and Henson recording studios. Arghhhhhhhhhhh.....
I think it's wrong. Sessions with Martin were at AIR with the band in March 2013. Abbey Road was used later (maybe July) for orchestral overdubs, as we can see from the photos on the booklet...

When you mentioned earlier about George Martin visiting Giles at Abbey Road in July, did the article specifically state that it was for a Paul McCartney session?

I would really like to thank Kestrel for this thread. The reason why I looked this up is because when i heard 'New' this morning, i was absolutely convinced certain songs, particularly 'Save Us', was recorded for Off The Ground. His voice sounds younger on some songs like he sang them 20 years ago compared to others on 'New'. In fact, i still stand by it. That vocal is from 1993, I'm sure. Others- like the title track, sound like he recorded them recently. But no way for 'Save Us'. His voice sounds way much younger.
Then how do you explain Epworth's involvement ?
ZING! I think you've hit the nail on the head! Paul Epworth was 19 in 1993.
Well, one could explain it the same way they do with Lennon's involvement on "Free as a Bird" fifteen years after he died. Paul, George and Ringo worked from a demo tape. Having said that, the younger vocal theory is nonsense.

Don't think so. That's why i prefer to say MAYBE July...

According to what Paul is saying in the NEW booklet, APPRECIATE and LOOKING AT HER were recorded after the sessions at AIR in March 2013. That means probably April-May Paul was in Los Angeles in May visiting Graceland. Regarding HOG HILL recordings, the studio could have been used both for laying down the basic tracks with Martin (the February date you're reporting could be the case...btw where this info comes from?) or for finishing touches after the Spring recordings (meaning he recorded in the UK in Summer).

The Hog Hill Mill February date came from a radio phone-in interview Paul did where he said he was on his way up the track to work with Giles Martin. I'm assuming this was Hog Hill Mill as I don't think any of the London studios have tracks leading to them. The 'finishing touches' were done in LA in the summer after the orchestral overdubs at Abbey Road, which may have been last July....or earlier. I think though we can safely say that the album was recorded between Janaury 2012 & July 2013.

According to what Paul is saying in the NEW booklet,
I'm a bit wary of what Paul was saying in the cd sleeve notes.......for example about working with Giles Martin he writes: ' we worked together on music for the Olympic Games and had recorded a song for an upcoming bungee video game.I asked him if he would like to work on some of my new songs .He agreed so we went into Air Lyndhurst studios in north London and laid down 'On My Way To Work', 'Everybody Out There' and 'I Can Bet'. Next we took all the tracks out to Los Angeles where we had two rooms at Henson studios and made finbal mixes of everything......'. Constructing a time-line on those events we have the Olympic Games opening ceremony taking place on 27th July 2012 and we have those final mixes taking place roughly twelve months later! So when did he work with Giles on those three songs? The way Paul writes they are post-Olympics (ie post July 2012) but seemingly soon after (ie autumn 2012) but all the circumstantial evidence points to earlier this year? I guess it all depends on how long Paul waited for after the Olympics before he actually asked Giles to work on his new songs?

But Martin said he was approached last december (meaning 2012). So it makes sense that they started working at HOG HILL around February 2013 and went to AIR in March 2013 to record these three.

I was unaware that Giles Martin said that. Yes,with that in mind, the Hog Hill Mill & Air Lyndhurst recording dates look more certain. As a kind of side note, Paul always tends to take his Winter holiday during the first couple of weeks on January so it was unlikely anything was recorded then......or the corresponding weeks in 2012 prior to working with Paul Epworth.

Sorry Luca, I didn't really address the points you rasied here. I suspect you are right and that Appreciate & Looking At Here were started at Hog Hill Mill (basic tracks) and then had words added (and vocals recorded) whilst in LA. I believe it was the lyrics that Paul is refering to in the sleeve notes when he stated 'we would write and record new offerings'. It is highly unlikely any further recordings took place (at Hog Hill Mill) after the Henson Studios recordings unless they took place in two seperate blocks with more HHM sessions taking place inbetween the two blocks? It would help if we knew 100% exactly when the sessions were completed and the final mixing took place? Looking at the booklet credits though I think the listing of the studios were in the correct order in which they were used ie New (the song) was recorded at Avatar,Henson, Air Lyndhurst and Hog Hill Mill in that order.

I was wondering if the studios are listed in the correct order, but I don't think so...too many errors and omissions, also in the instruments credits...I.e. ON MY WAY TO WORK: where's AIR Studios??? EARLY DAYS: it seems unlikely that they did record the song at HENSON first and then came back to HOG HILL....wasn't Johns involved in sessions at ABBEY ROAD and AIR back in 2012??? I would place HOG HILL as a starting studio (basic track and or first versions) or for final overdubs...That's my guess.

Paul remembers OMWTW being recorded at Air but possibly it was started at Hog Hill Mill, had the strings done at Abbey Road and was finished at Henson, all of which is supported by the credits. Ethan Johns was certainly at Abbey Road, as remembered by Paul and as seen (apparently) conducting musicians at Abbey Road in the booklet centrefold. He also worked at Hog Hill Mill, according to Paul and at Air according to the credits. Looking at how busy Paul was last year its actually quite difficult to even work out when he would have had time to record as he seemed to spend the first six months of 2012 either on holiday, promoting Kisses On The Bottom or playing live in central /South Ameriuca and in Europe.

Checking again the booklet. Don't think that the recording studio order is accurate in all the songs. I.E. Early Days. If it was recorded with Ethan Johns, back in 2012, it was surely started at HOG HILL and not at HENSON. The booklet places Henson before Hog Hill, and it seem strange to me. My guess is that the basic track was recorded by Paul on acoustic and Johns on drums, with Paul adding Bill Black bass. Then at Henson, Paul overdubbed the rest with the band.

That does seem logical so I think you're right about the studios not being listed in order. I do place more faith though on the booklet credits than I do on Paul's inner sleeve essay on the album's recording schedule.

I agree. Another clue could be the recording of HEART OF THE COUNTRY appeared last year in January if I'm not wrong. One can see Paul and Mark Ronson at HOG HILL. Who knows when... Also, you can hear a melody in the background. it seems a cell phone ringing or something. It would become the riff of ALLIGATOR. I think that the first thing recorded was THE SECRET LIFE OF A PARTY GIRL, that went unissued.
