If it were your last hour on earth
-
Let's see what kind of Paul fans we've got here... I'm sorry if this topic seems too morbid to discuss but to me it is worth talking about. When my 88 year old mom was dying and I was by her bedside alone in her final hours at the hospital she was in a coma-like state but it was obvious that she still had her hearing (the sense of hearing is the last sense to go the nurse told me). I knew she loved music as I did and I wanted to play some of her favorite songs for her while I held her hand. I brought my old boombox to the hospital and I played CD's from Bing Crosby, Perry Como and Andy Williams...these were her favorite singers. And I knew her two all-time favorite songs...."I'll Be Loving You Always" and "All The Way". I think both my parents loved those two songs and it probably brought back memories of my dad who had been gone for twenty years. So what I want to ask you is this...if you had ONE LAST HOUR left on this earth, you were unable to speak or get a message across to anyone, but you could still hear very well...what songs would you want played for you? (This is different than "Desert Island Favorites" because I know mine would be upbeat, positive, truly rocking songs to keep me going until I got off the island. I'm not going to be playing ""Layla" on my deathbed.) Finally, would you want to choose your final hour's songs or have someone who knows you quite well to be at your bedside choosing what THEY think you would like? There's something to be said for that kind of comfort (I hope). Think about it...and maybe consider doing this for someone you love also. I will list my choices on the next post.

Don't kick me out of this forum...I am a Beatle fan and a Paul fan but I would only choose ONE Beatle song for my final hour. There are way too many wonderful artists/songs for me to only hear one artist or one album. So here are my choices. I'd say I'd get about 16-17 songs in an hour, right? I would want "If I Fell" by The Beatles but all of the rest of the songs would be by my other favorite artists John Denver, Gordon Lightfoot, Barbra Streisand, Bread, Neil Diamond, etc. I'd want two religious songs "Panis Angelicus" sung by Josh Groban and "Nessun Dorma" by Pavorotti. And I'd want my parents two favorite songs. As much as I'd like to choose all of my songs myself it would actually mean more to me to think that my immediate family members would KNOW what to play for me as I have brainwashed them with my music for so many years. I am sure I am in the minority here for not choosing all Paul or Beatles songs. I'd love to hear what you'd want for your last hour.

If I Fell is my favorite Beatles song, so that would be #1 on my list. Others (in no particular order): Here, There and Everywhere In My Life This Boy Calico Skies Maybe I'm Amazed And Your Bird Can Sing You Can't Do That My Love I Will Eight Days A Week Oh! Darling Please Please Me Side 2 of Abbey Road No Matter What (Badfinger) Day After Day (Badfinger) Baby Blue (Badfinger) As you can see, I would mostly want to hear Beatles/Paul. You only gave us an hour and I think I went over that time limit!

Sorry if I posted in the wrong thread. I had given it some thought and chose the Paul thread as I expect that most people's responses will be Paul songs. And I do look forward to hearing what those Paul choices would be. Nancy, I like what you picked. I like one or two Badfinger songs but did not know a thing about them until just last week when I read about them on Wikipedia. What a sad story! Here all along I assumed they had done very well, especially after having been given a blessing of sorts from "The Beatles" early on. You chose "I Will"....now I may need to reconsider my choices. I love that one!

Oops, forgot my second religious song..."Ave Maria". Then I'd also want "Nessun Dorma" sung by Pavarotti. Nancy, would your family or friends "get it right" if they had to choose for you?

"Bring The Balance Back" -
Steven, I'm really curious...why "Tiptoe through the Tulips"? There must be some personal connection to Tiny Tim? I can't believe it...I came so close to including The Moody Blues in my last hour and as much as I totally love "Tuesday Afternoon" I would have chosen the sublime album version of "The Story in Your Eyes". I must admit, it's a song where I did not always know the correct lyrics. It took a while for me to hear "And the sunshine we've been waiting for will turn to rain" "If I Fell" seems to be doing very well, wouldn't you say? All three of us have chosen it.

Thanks...I forgot temporarily about Story In Your Eyes The song gives us options. We experience sun and rain in our lifetimes. I Can See Clearly Now ~ Johnny Nash

Here's a pretty happy song that would put my mind at ease while on the way to my final and permanent sleep...LOL

This is an interesting topic. I have seen first hand with two family members that hearing is the last sense to go. If I had to pick an hour worth of songs would I want my favorite songs of all time that I've heard over and over? or songs that might trigger special memories to comfort me into death? I'm not sure. I think I might pick songs I love that feel comforting... slower songs, but rich with meaning or triggering wonderful memories. My first pass at the death bed playlist in no particular order: Maybe I'm Amazed In My life A Day in the Life Things We Said Today My love Oh! Darling Jenny Wren Ram On Imagine - John Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)- George Pink Moon - Nick Drake I'm in Love with a Girl - Big Star How Can You Mend a Broken Heart - Al Green or Bee Gees A Really Good Time - Roxy Music Mother of Pearl - Roxy Music To The End - Blur Grace - Jeff Buckley Last Goodbye - Jeff Buckley Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley Probably over an hour. I'd hang on until the last note though

They'd be close! They all know I've loved the Beatles for 50 years.

You didn't answer Scarlett about "Tiptoe Through the Tulips." And I was curious as to why you chose "Wooden Heart."

Amidst all of the somber thinking...Tiptoe was just a way to introduce a little light heartedness. Wooden Heart was simply because it is one of the first beautifully sweet song segments that I remember from a movie.

Steven - I like your idea of having a bit of light-heartedness in the final hour. I'm thinking of adding the Partridge Family's "I Think I Love You" to my list but I'd be afraid when I'd meet St Peter at the pearly gates he'd say, "You chose WHAAAAT???????"

This subject is hitting me with really negative energy...

I'm sorry, Love2Travel. It's understandable that this topic could make a person feel uncomfortable. I sing in a church choir where we prepare music for funeral masses so I am accustomed to this sort of thing. Music is important to me and I know I'd want to listen to certain songs in the final hours. But that's my personal taste, it's not for everyone. By the way, I love to travel too. Have been to many islands, 42 US states and over 30 countries. Cruising is one of my favorite ways to travel. But there will always be a place in my heart for really long road trips.
