New ELO and Paul

Whatever Lynne produces (ie) touches, is obvious to the ears. I don't detect a lot of his touch: Based on that - he didn't ruin Flaming Pie.
I dreaded hearing Flaming Pie when I'd learned that Jeff Lynne was producing it. I feared that it would sound like a Wilburys/tom Petty record. But to my amazement, the album sounded fresh and very McCartney.

I don't care how true that saying is. It is gross!

I thought Paul and Jeff already collaborated on "Maybe Baby"

And that is EXACTLY why I don't want Lynne anywhere near McCartney. The result leaves Paul's sanitised vocal as a bit part surrounded by an ELO meets Wilburys meets FAAB production simply dripping with Lynne. A horrid result.

I like a lot of ELO. On The Third Day through to Out Of The Blue was a golden run. After that, meh. The Lynne "magic" waned. His style and technique suited his own songs perfectly. When he imposes it on other artists is when the problems start for me. I understand why George wanted him in on the Threetles tracks for Anthology and he may have been the best man for the technical salavaging job needed on John's cassette demos but his trademark production style ruined FAAB and Real Love. They sound like a cross between the Wilburys and ELO and that's not a compliment. As far as Lynne's Beatlesque tendencies are concerned, one only has to listen to his abysmal unreleased 1982 ELO track Beatles Forever to see where that path led him. A truly awful track and right down there with Paul's own unreleased Beatley tribute track Return To Pepperland. Even Lynne's own new ELO album is horrid. The guy has ruined HIMSELF!

I think Katherine Jenkins and Paul would make a good mix it will be a good exercise for Paul to write songs for a female

Well, this has been beaten to death! I suspect whatever Paul releases next will sound a lot like NEW and will be about as successful. Maybe even less. Now, I am going to listen to When I Was A Boy, ELO's new song, which is a much better introspective song than That Was Me or Early Days.

I really liked the NEW album, so that would be fine with me (the "sounding like" part) Paul (at his age) will never sell like he & Wings or The Beatles did. Just a fact of life.

I totally agree with you Nancy. Although there will always be examples of older artists who do still remain commercially popular as recording artists, the vast majority won't be, even if they are still very popular as live performers. Its mainly youngsters who buy the latest recorded music (as it always has been) and I know from experience that I would have found it unthinkable as a teenager, going out and buying an album by a 73 year old. I thought buying a Wings lp by a bunch of thirty somethings was bad enough !!

You are correct. For me NEW is "meh" so I am not sure I will get the next one unless I really like the songs. I liked the song New, but the rest of it doesn't sound like that. EDIT: To be fair to Paul, he does write in very diverse styles so his CDs have very different sounding songs, unlike, say, an AC/DC album.

Now, Sting.... he was brilliant from Reggatta De Blanc to The Dream of The Blue Turtles...
Sacred Love annoyed me when I first heard it, but it grew on me after a while. On "Never Coming Home", he shifts his vocals slightly for each verse. As the pronouns change, so does his timbre. It's subtle, but pretty clever.

New was another one that took me a while to get into. I'm not sure why. When I first heard it, I didn't care. But after listening to it a few times, I like it.
