One of the biggest problems we have is the judicial system itself, that keeps recycling violent criminals back out onto the streets for the public and police to deal with, over and over and over again. Listened to a police officer humbly state this case on the news the other night.
With the world's highest incarceration rate, I don't think that holds water. What does hold water is that our prison and parole systems completely fail to equip prisoners for reentry into society, while a series of insane laws and policies make it extremely hard for formerly incarcerated people to get a legal job.
It most certainly does hold water. Violent criminals are out for a very short period of time to assault the public again, and then are right back in prison. Since marijuana was moved to being a maximally serious drug offence, the prisons are plugged full of inmates who have done nothing more than enjoy smoking peaceful old pot. Including Vietnam Veterans who have been in prison for several years for the same offence. Dangerous abusive drunks and drunk drivers are cycled through in the same manner. You should study Nebraska's Good Time Law. Let the holy rollers out and make room for Violent Criminals to be KEPT THERE!!!
Actually not true. Violent offenders make up a much larger percentage of the prison population than drug offenders. But the evidence does not suggest that "lock 'em up and throw away the key" is an effective remedy for violent crime: http://www.vox.com/2016/9/15/12930280/jay-z-video-drugs-prison
Drug Offenses...Not Violent Crime Filling Up Prisons http://www.ibtimes.com/ ............................................................ "Number Of People Serving Time For Drug, Violent, Property, and Other Offenses In US Prisons) Federal: "Fifty percent (95,800) of sentenced inmates in federal prison on September 30, 2014 (the most recent date for which federal offense data are available) were serving time for drug offenses (table 12, appendix table 5). In comparison to the 53% in state prisons, violent offenders represented 7% of the federal prison population (14,000 prisoners). Among female federal prisoners, 4% were convicted of violent crimes in 2014. Public order offenders made up 36% of the BOP population, and 9% of federal prisoners (17,000) were serving time for immigration offenses. Among Hispanics in federal prisons, 26% were sentenced for immigration offenses (16,100 inmates), and 57% were sentenced for drug crimes (36,000 inmates). Fifty-three percent of black federal prisoners were convicted drug offenders in 2014, and 25% served sentences for weapons offenses." - See more at: http://www.drugwarfacts.org/ I AM 1000% FOR SOCIAL PROGRAMS...BUT YOU MIGHT TELL THAT TO THE RAATWING REPUBLICAN AND CONSERVATIVE PARTIES WHO ARE CONSTANTLY VOTING AGAINST THE FUNDING OF ANY SOCIAL PROGRAMS.
You've actually made my point. As the article you cite states, 53% of inmates in state prisons are there for violent offenses. In 2014 (the latest stats available), federal prisons held a total of 210,567 inmates altogether while state prisons held 1,561,525. In other other words, The number of people held in state prisons for violent offenses is roughly three and a half times the entire federal prison population for all types of crimes. Drug offenders represent 15.7% of the state prison population and are vastly outnumbered by violent offenders. Speaking of violence, have you seen the brutal retaliation on clowns that are scaring people, including the guy who shot a clown who jumped out at him, in the face !!

Never sneak up on or scare Americans. They will shoot you.

More insanity. And now many stores are pulling clown masks & costumes from the shelves. No one seems to know exactly why these clowns have been appearing & scaring children & adults. Twisted.

I've put a moratorium on the news because it is disheartening to learn about all the hatred & violence.

I was watching the local news the other night and saw a commercial that I couldn't believe that they would have on television. They were advertising a 9mm handgun with a laser pointer. I couldn't flippin' believe it!
