"Penguin" & other songs by illwobble

I review your songs kind of like 'Plastic Soul Man' did, but I have different opinions on some of these tracks: First, I like your voice too. And your lyrics are very good, they seem random sometimes at first look, but when you actually read them, there is always a clever hint or turn at the end. The songs: Jonathan (Shudder): Very catchy, reminds me of another song (maybe of a German band), but I can't figure out which one. Nevertheless, maybe your best tune so far. Grasshopper: I like the lyrics, but the tune is not my kind of tea, sorry. A bit too random and bland for me. Flaunted Vice: Reminds me of The Kinks. The lyrics, the tune and phrasing is really Ray Davies-style, which is a good thing. Nice one. Penguin: First song I've heard from you and my favorite. I even downloaded it from youtube and listen to it on my ipod. Penguins are my favorite animals and the whole song is really a great love-song. Clever lyrics, great guitar, nice singing and whistling and it sounds indeed a bit like Paul. Days With You: Hard to say anything bad about it since you wrote it for your daughter. It's good overall, but for me it lacks a bit of variety. The verses are really good, but the chorus needs a bit more variety in tune and in the lyrics, at least in my opinion. Lovers Once: Really good, sad lyrics and nice guitar-playing, I like it. One of those songs that stuck in your head. There Goes The Sun: In opposite to Plastic Soul Man I really like it. The lyrics are easy but at the same time clever and the tune is again catchy. Could be longer than one minute though. Hope Of Deliverance: Not as good as Paul's version, but who in this world can compare with Paul? I like that you not just cover this song but makes your version out of it. Surely there are cover of Pauls-songs out there that are much more worse. In My Chair: Different than most of your other songs. Lyrics are dark and mysterious, the tune fits in very well, it's a strage mix of being idle and paying attention. The song stucks in your head also. So Where Do We Start?: A nice up-tempo-song. Good to sing along, I like it too.

Here's a demo of a new song I wrote called "Panda Bear" It was "dance-tonight" who asked me to write a song about a panda since he liked my penguin one! Anyway It's ended up as a fairly melancholy song. I'm really annoyed I didn't manage to get this recorded a week ago, since there was a
Lyrics: So what is wrong with you now, panda bear? You act like you can't even see her there Why don't you go to her, and make her your panda bear? (yeah yeah yeah) There's not so many of you left any more But you're sat there thinking and you don't seem sure What are you waiting for? You need to make lots more panda bears It's not easy when you find the one you want Trying to get close to her You're afraid that she might not want you But wouldn't it be worse never knowing for sure? So what is wrong with me now? Why can't I Walk up to her and look her in the eye? Why must I be so shy? Why can't I tell her I like her (I leave it far too late and still can't ever tell it straight) We play these games and we don't play fair It's dog eat dog, and people just don't care So what hope is there for a gentle panda bear? It's not easy when you find the one you want Trying to get close to her Yes, you might just make a fool of yourself But it might be much worse never knowing for sure So what is wrong with you now, panda bear? You act like you can't even see her there Why don't you go to her, and make her your - panda bear? -
Also here's a demo of another new song called "7 Billion People". My friend Magnus once again on guitar.
Lyrics: A lot of people think too much A lot of people drink too much A lot of people think too much of themselves A lot of people think too much A lot of people drink too much So many people hardly think at all There's seven billion people in this world besides me Like lots of them I think the world revolves around me But the Sun is only one of billions in this galaxy Which is only one of billions of galaxies A lot of people know it all A lot of people blow it all A lot of people throw it all away A lot of people know it all A lot of people think they know it all So many people hardly know anything There's seven billion people in this world besides me Like lots of them I think the world revolves around me But the Sun is only one of billions in this galaxy One of billions of billions of stars Billions of billions of stars! Well maybe I just think too much While other people drink too much Too many people think too much of themselves -
Thought you might like to hear this illwobs, just having some fun with the Penguin tonight! its not a final cut by any means, I'm having to whisper and all that nonsense.. but it came out cool enough to show you I figure. the groove I was into totally spontaneously inspired that Mr. Moonlight at the end. the C-D-Em change in Penguin was what did it, the way I was playing your tune made it a little reminiscent for me! a little Lennon going on in this version kapoo covering illwobble's Penguin
next I am going to mess around with Jonathan (Shudder), I'll see if i can get a version done real quick. stay tuned. **Edit - kapoo covering illwobble's Jonathan (Shudder) -
Great song Jon! It's really like a love-song between panda bears. I think it's great and it's nothing wrong with being melancholic, in fact, you made a happy love-song with "Penguin", now the opposite with "Panda Bear", I like that. Nice lyrics and a great tune. I like the way that the lyrics are about Pandas, but reflecting so much the human world too. "7 Billion People" is also very melancholic, but I like it too. Again, very good lyrics.

Glad you approve! Yeah, I'd say Panda Bear is really about people but using pandas as a metaphor. Mind you that's even MORE the case with Penguin. Like I said I had some reservations about it when I found that actually pandas only seem to have trouble mating when in captivity, and also the problem isn't usually the male being uninterested or shy but more technical problems with mating and the female's limited window of opportunity in terms of hormones!!! Anyway, never mind!! And I know there's nothing wrong with being melancholic. It's just I realise the majority of my songs are a bit melancholic and feel I should try to go for some more up-tempo fell-good numbers if I can. But you have to run with whatever you get inspiration for.

No sweat, that was a good time! those tracks are stripped down, just 1 guitar 1 vocal on Penguin I think, and 2 guitars 1 vocal on Jonathan. but with effects on the guitars, and 'rock vocal' effect on the vocals in both songs. I will definitely get you those Mp3s!

Demo of a new song: Killing Time:
This needs lots of drums and a proper rock arrangement really, but works ok as an acoustic version. Lyrics: Are you living? Are you living right now? Are you living? Or are you just waiting? Are you living? Are you living right now? Are you living? Or are you just waiting? Waiting to live; waiting 'till you get to where you're trying to go If you even remember where that is anymore Are you living? Are you living right now? Are you living? Or are you just killing? Are you living? Are you living right now? Are you living? Or are you just killing time? Killing time, killing time, killing time, killing time Are you enjoying? Are you enjoying yourself? Or just worrying about the next thing? Are you enjoying? Are you enjoying yourself? Or just worrying about the next thing? Too worried to live; too worried to enjoy what's happening all around If you even notice any of it anymore Are you living? Are you living right now? Are you living? Or are you just waiting? Are you living? Are you living right now? Are you living? Or are you just killing time? Killing time, killing time, killing time, killing time Are you living? Are you living right now? Or just trying to earn a living? Is it working? Is it working right now? Are you getting a life by working? Still waiting to live; still waiting 'till you get to where you're trying to go If you even remember where that is anymore Are you living? Are you living right now? Are you living? Or are you just waiting? Are you living? Are you living right now? Are you living? Or are you just killing time? -
And here's a rough demo of another one, called "Escape". More up-tempo acoustic number. Not quite happy with all the lyrics yet and will probably change them. ESCAPE:

Very Woody Guthrie -- as well as some of the cool protest songs at Woodstock. Authentic lil' song.

I'm so ticked right now, sitting here trying to listen and for some odd reason Soundcloud will not play! I'll definitely be back to try again shortly.

"Killing Time" is okay, but I don't know, to me it lacks something. Maybe in the lyrics or in the tune. "Escape" is really great, like the acoustic tune and the lyrics are really nice, you shouldn't change them much.

I've just emailed 'the guys' (Illwobble, Kapoo and Audi) about something and I've sung Illwobbles praises about the song on there, but I'll post it here too for everyone to see! Sorry I've not given you any feedback on Killing Time yet! I remember ages back when you originally pitched the idea and I liked it back then, so to hear it properly recorded is awesome. Love the lyrics and the melody. Especially the melody - I had it stuck in my head all yesterday! haha I love it exactly as it is! I don't tink I could even add any harmonies to enhance your vocal cos it sounds great!

Josh, thanks for your words about Killing Time (although I don't seem to have any email from you - yet). Glad you found the melody catchy!

Fair enough. I mean like I say it is supposed to be a rocker really. The "chorus" (the bit where I just sing "killing time" 4 times) is certainly a bit weak as is, and that's where I'd want some nice heavy guitar riffs to bring in some excitement.

Good to hear. No, I was only aiming for a few little tweaks. Not very happy with the final verse which I just wrote in a rush to get something down. Audi, glad you liked that one too. Thanks. Kapoo, look forward to hearing what you think of the songs. Sorry about the technical issues. That's a drag.

Must you clutter up my thread with this garbage?!! Email just took a while to come through is all. Got it now fine. Josh's new song is very promising.

Posted this in another thread, but it belongs here: "Killing Time" sounds VERY McCartney to me. I like it! And the lyrics make ya' think a bit.
