Arrived today! Listening to 'Kashmir' right now!
And did it sound to you like "the music that might have accompanied Cleopatra's barge as it was pulled down the Nile by a thousand struggling slaves"? I thought that was a pretty good description! Zep is kind of unique in my experience, in that I normally dislike lengthy tracks but theirs never bore me. In fact, some of their more 'epic' songs are among my favorites: Kashmir, In My Time of Dying, Ten Years Gone, Achilles Last Stand, Dazed and Confused, Since I've Been Loving You, Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, Rain Song, When the Levee Breaks, etc., etc.
-
The only time I dont' like some of Zeppelin's longer tracks is in concert sometimes. Like in How The West Was Won, I think Dazed and Confused drags on for like 30 minutes and after a while Page's guitar just makes all these annoying noises.
-
I agree, randompaul - Zep definitely had a tendency to go excess in their live performances. Even so, I think they did 'excess' better than anyone else!

Indeed. Zeppelin are the only band I can listen to a 14-minute drum solo with and not get bored. Best. Live Band. Ever.
-
I do like the drum solos though. I think HTWWW's Moby Dick is like 19 minutes or something.

Yeah, that sounds about right. I defy anyone to tell me there's a better drummer than John Henry Bonham after listening to that.
-
You won't be hearing otherwise from me. Bonzo is the greatest rock drummer ever, imo. He was so heavy-handed, his intelligence as a drummer was often overlooked. But he was a very intelligent drummer. Herman Melville, eat your heart out.

Ha ha! No it didn't! What it did remind me of was the first time I heard it at a gig my friends were playing at (they had a heavy rock band); tapes were played before they came on and 'Kashmir' was on one of them - ah happy days!

I have all their studio albums now

Well, huzzah for you. I still need to replace Physical Graffiti. Once that's done, though, I'll have all their studio albums too.
-
I had to buy 'Physical Graffiti' because it reminded me of my childhood
-
BUMP Currently reading the 'Stairway To Heaven' book
-
nice... what's it about? I don't have all the studio albums. I only have like LZ 1, 2, 4, and Physical Graffiti.
-
It's by Richard Cole their Tour Manager so it's mainly about their tours and their wild behaviour on the road
-
ooooooooh sounds good. I'll check it out next time I"m at borders or something.
