Doctor Who

I just love the show, and have been a big fan for years. And I absolutely adore David. I never miss it. What's everyone think of the new series so far? And how do you like Catherine Tate being his companion?

Doctor Who has come of age, this new relaunched series (now in it's fourth season) has the funds - and more importantly, the technical capability - to realise the fantasy sequences that the old Doctor Who stories could only hint at. Part of the fun of the old shows were the cardboard sets charmingly built in much the same manner as Blue Peter models - but the new production and special effects lift these new shows to a much greater level. The tongue in cheek script writing is so British with so many subtle "in-jokes" that might pass over the casual viewer. example: Donna Noble in her girlie chat last week "Do you go shopping? T K Maxximus?" So much is just for the pleasure of the script-writers - for example the names of the Pompei family are lifted straight from a 1960 Latin primer. Nowadays some of those in-jokes are shared in the companion "behind the scenes" show Dr Who Confidential on BBC3 but they have been carefully collated and shared for years by dedicated Whovians and site after site is available nowadays discussing these on the internet. The new series of shows do spend a lot more time developing the roles of the companions, Rose's struggles to understand her attraction and affection for the Doctor against her boyfriend Mickey. Martha Jones's more physical attraction to the doctor. And now Donna Nobles complete rejection of the Doctor as a love object - will that develop/change as the series develop? Donna is certainly being scripted to challenge the Doctor's non-intervention policy as evidenced this week. I feel that Catherine Tate is maturing through her association with this series, it is asking her to be more thoughtful - I just loved her scenes with her granddad on the allotments in episode one. Her sketch show characters are so flat and one-dimensional. She may well find this role will be a turning point in her career that opens new doors and roles rather than seeing her worth as a sketch show comedienne slowly devalue. Martin

I'm having trouble getting used to Catherine Tate in it. I do like her normally as she's a great actress as well as her comedy sketch show, but so far not in this. I'm hoping that my initial feelings change as her character settles in but I've had to fight myself to not turn over the channel these last two weeks. (although the adipose were so cute!!!! ) It's loyalty for the show that is keeping me watching at the moment

Hi Sarah F, I am kind of indifferent to Catherine Tate. Not a fan of her comedy tv show, but like her in Doctor Who, but would prefer Rose or Martha (both even would be good as well) as the companion(s). Roxy641

Are you refering to what the scriptwriters refer to as "series arcs" - subtle hints that make no sense to the existing plot but sow seeds for the future? This article about the series to date picks up on three such: http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol/arts_and_entertainment/tv_and_radio/article3756712.ece
Last week?s episode ? centred on Pompeii ? was a belter: spooky, funny, very clever, and letting an old-school draught of space-time chill blow across Saturday night as it set up some potent, Bad Wolf-style series arcs. Donna was told she had ?something on her back?, while the Doctor was informed ?She will return.? Google?s What Everyone?s Thinking! informs me that, at this point, 78 per cent of the British population bounced up and down on their sofas shouting ?ROSE! He means ROSE! I?m totally getting that reference! IT MEANS ROSE IS COMING BACK!? This week ? The Planet of the Ood ? we have another series arc to add to the pot. ?Soon, your song will end,? the Doctor is informed ? and presumably not a reference to the Simon Bates show?s Our Tune, which ended in 1997; news that surely reached even the remotest pockets of the galaxy.
Visit the link above for the full article. If so the meaning will unfold in due course. Certainly there is no trade gossip about David Tennant leaving - indeed next year will see a shortened run of "specials" rather than a full series esp. so that David can fulfil other commitments. If he is to be replaced surely that wouldn't be needed. David Tennant has been seen on location filming the 2008 Xmas special already: http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/newsid_7360000/newsid_7360000/7360048.stm That suggests that this series does not end with a transformation into a new actor. ive been a little disappointed by series 4 so far

I didn't enjoy it again on Sat
-
I did, apart from it turning out to be a two part cliff hanger. I love the girls comparing notes about The Doctor when they met and getting on much against expectations. Martha "leading" the attack on the ATMOS facility was very far-fetched though. I suppose having two children in the room who would hide behind the sofa if it wasn't against the wall, as I can unashamedly admit I did myself as a child, so I do enjoy it for that connection between the children and my childhood. I used to have nightmares as a child about the cybermen ops: ..maybe that's it, I've grown up and become a pirate

We had another teasing glimpse of Rose in tonights show - just flickers briefly into view on a TV monitor in the Tardis. In the next weeks episode trailer we learn we get to meet The Doctor's daughter Martin

Oohh... really? I haven't seen this week's episode just yet. Hopefully I'll get to see it this evening. So, Rose makes another appearance? And, oh, wow... his daughter is supposed to appear in the following show...? Now that should be interesting...

Here's a screen capture from next weeks episode called indeed The Doctor's Daughter: Can't put a name to the actress yet, I may copy this into the Name the Celebrity thread as well for help. The trailer makes it clear the character is a gymnastic freedom fighter of some sort. Martin

cremetangerine names her as Georgia Moffett And more searching around confirms her in that role for next week. And in one of those delicious Dr Who synchronicity moments it turns out she is the real-life daughter of Peter Davison The Fifth Doctor. Her mother is the comic actress Sandra Dickinson - that's why her face is so unnervingly familiar. Apparently she tried out for the role of Rose Tyler eventually made famous by Billy Piper - at least she's got herself a role in the series that may have scripting possibilties for the future. Can't wait........... Martin

i think she was on the audio for red dawn with her dad as the doctor

Ok, so I'm only familiar with the new show but the Doctor has a daughter? What happened to "I don't do domestic."? On the other hand, one of the earlier doctors travelled with his grandchildren, I think. Oh well, so maybe he isn't the last Time Lord, after all. Or it's all a big sham. So many possibilities. I have yet to see this week's episode. This waiting time is killing me...

Nothing is ever what it seems in that show is it As the episode is called "The Doctor's Daughter" that surprise isn't even sprung at the opening credits for we're speculating about it now........... I'm just as keen to see how they get round that one as well. After all, a daughter implies a mother.............. Martin
