Matthew's Random Notes And Memorable Moments From The Grammy Awards (Because He Doesn't Have Anything Else To Do): 1. Frank Sinatra & Alicia Keys - I really liked this. You certainly can't celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Grammys without Ol' Blue Eyes and they did a fine job here. I was stunned by Alicia. She really nailed it in every possible way. She didn't oversing it and really did a great job. Alicia is one who earns her checks. Excellent opening. 2. Carrie Underwood - 3. Morris Day & The Time - Thanks to my Father's love of 1980's music, their two hits are firmly and permanently stuck in my head. So it was cool to see them perform, although Rihanna had no business being up there in the middle. But that's not why I brought her up... as I was hearing this performance, I went and glanced at my TV and thought she was Prince, who just introduced someone earlier, and worked with Morris Day in "Purple Rain." Look at the hair... 4. The Beatles' LOVE - Interesting rendition to "A Day In The Life," but the two people who did "Let It Be" just sucked. The little guy, alright, I can understand, but that lady just butchered the hell out of it. Why is it that whenever it comes to an emotional song - especially "The Star Spangled Banner" - certain singers just overdo the CRAP out of it?! Oh My God, I literally could not wait for this woman to stop singing. Hey, lady: Roseanne's on line 1, she wants her voice back. 5. George Martin - I was really happy to see him get this. I'm a huge George Martin fan and it was great to see him there and get a well-deserved award. It was nice to see Ringo up there too, at least until he walked off the podium after barely finding out that he'd have to cut his speech short... Kidding! 6. Tina Turner - Until she sang, I couldn't even recognize it was her (wonder if she had some sort of face lift). Perhaps it was the hair. In any event, she really surprised me. The woman's still got it. She was dancing right along with women more than half her junior and keeping up with them, while singing, which I thought was incredible. She started off a little weak during the low notes of "What's Love Got To Do With It?," (something I've noticed a lot of female singers struggle with) but really picked it up on "Proud Mary," which I was hoping she would do. She really was great, though. While her voice seemed low enough to do Ike's parts as well, dare I say it, I thought 68 year old Tina Turner outdid Beyonce on that one. Way to go, Anna Marie... still got it! 7. Foo Fighters - Why is it that being in one of the greatest bands of our generation and following that up with a really successful band doesn't get you the kind of respect it should? Ask Dave Grohl. The more I listen to the Foo Fighters, the more I remember how much I like them. Dave is really one of the most underappreciated musicians of the past 20 years. He is a first class drummer, a great guitarist, and writes great stuff, and he's been doing it for years. One thing I've always really liked about him, and the quality I wish I had most as a musician, is the versatility in his voice. He has the ability to sing really softly and gently, which sounds pleasant, and then, at the drop of a hat, start screaming with the best of them. He's really great and they put on not only a great performance, but also a historical one, as it was the first outdoor concert in Grammy history. They put on a good show, although it was funny how Dave's long, messy hair kept going completely over his face. Although there's this hunch in me that my Queen somehow liked that long, messy hair... Great job. It also reminds me that I should start collecting some of their album's. 8. George Lopez - Please... go away. You used to be funny a long, long time ago, but if I hear one more freaking recycled joke of yours, I will scream. You are not funny... annoying does not begin to describe it. 9. Aretha Franklin - O.K., Aretha, I'm a fan. If I had to compile a list of the greatest female voices of all-time, you'd probably come in #1. Most people who try to imitate you are usually jokes (see American Idol). Tonight, you sang a lot better than when I last saw you during the Super Bowl about a year or two ago in Detroit, but, good God, Aretha... what the hell was up with that outfit? I was waiting for Ringo to walk up to the stage and start singing "Yellow Submarine." And then walk off, when they cut him off. Which brings me to... 10. Vince Gill - It's funny. You see, one of the reasons I like to watch the Grammys is because, being a musician, it's a nice little fantasy to think about being there one day. So when Ringo gave him the award, I thought: "How freaking cool would that be to win an award and then have it handed to you by a Beatle?" And right as I was thinking that, Vince Gill said the same damn thing. But that's not why he makes the list. It was what he said AFTER that earned him a ton of points. "I got an award from a Beatle... you haven't got that yet, Kanye." Line of the night, by far. 11. Amy Winehouse - Outside of the rampant overexposure of her personal problems, I've never heard of her nor her music, until tonight. Then after seeing her London performance... as I expected, she's ridiculously overrated, not to mention a person who absolutely GRATED on my nerves, for some reason. Although I will admit, "Rehab," wasn't bad - the chorus will stick in my head, it's catchy - but if I want to listen to 60's Motown, I'll listen to the real stuff, which is far superior and FAR less self-indulgent. I officially cannot stand this woman. Perhaps her follow up single could go something like: "They tried to make me brush my teeth, but I said no, no, no. Yes, they're so black, they're so full of plaque, but, no, no, no..." 5 Grammys? Give me a freaking break. 12. John Fogerty, Little Richard & Jerry Lee Lewis - I was surprised to find out that Jerry Lee was there. For a 72 year old man, he did an admirable job and can still tickle the ivories, although he looked drained mid-way though and, by the end, he was...
Of course, we can't forget Little Richard, who is now 75 years old, 3 years older than Jerry Lee, by the way, which surprised me. It's funny... after 50 years, this man still cannot put on makeup, as it was caked up as hell and, as usual, looking, well, Tutti Fruiti as ever, and looking like the effeminate fraternal brother of Don King. All that aside, I have to give him credit... he was still hitting some of those notes and jamming... not bad. The Queen Of Rock 'N' Roll hasn't completely lost it. Having said that, Fogerty kicked both of their asses. Never was a big CCR fan, but heard that he had lost his voice in recent years. He sounded fine to me and put on a good show. Good job, John. 13. Herbie Hancock - I'm still trying to wrap around my head the fact that the biggest award in music just went to Herbie Hancock. I actually like Herbie, but... WOW, that shocked the hell out of me. What an upset. Can't wait to see Kanye's reaction. Overall, one of the better shows I've seen in awhile. I was kept entertained for most of it. That's a good thing. Good show. -
Thank you Matthew for the long description. Nice job!!! Now I don't feel like I missed anything.
