Should we tell the real Beatles story on film or just let it be? Published Date: 28 August 2009 By Tony Earnshaw So Paul McCartney has claimed that he and John Lennon didn't really have an issue with one another when they were in The Beatles. Speaking to the Radio Times this week, McCartney ? oops, sorry; I do, of course, mean Sir Paul ? has described as "crap" and "bulls**t" the oft-reported Lennon quotes that trashed McCartney's reputation during, after and beyond the Fab Four's time to With typical insensitivity McCartney puts Lennon's ire down to drugs and states: "This is the trouble with history. With journalism." McCartney has some front. This is the man who, when asked about his former friend's murder in 1980, responded with "It's a drag." Yes, Lennon was abrasive. Yes, he was a strident campaigner for the things he believed in. Yes, he was a thorn in the side of an American administration that hated him and all he stood for. But the man had spirit, a social and political conscience and, most importantly, an opinion he wasn't afraid to share. All of that, to my mind, still makes him more interesting today, almost 30 years after his death, than McCartney. What bothers me most about McCartney is his revisionist approach to his life. Not too long ago he stripped many of the Lennon/McCartney compositions of their musical embellishments to present them as naked songs. That, he claimed, was the way they had always been intended: pure. He meddled with the phrasing of the songwriting credits, swapping around the authorship to reflect his own efforts. Thus some compositions were re-labelled McCartney/Lennon. Just to make the point, of course... But why bother? McCartney is no slouch when it comes to penning hit songs. Why run the risk of alienating people after so many years? Isn't it enough that he is known as one half of arguably the greatest songwriting duo in pop music history? Evidently not. I've always seen it as a form of revenge. With Lennon long dead, McCartney can do as he pleases. And with several hundred million pounds in the bank, he has the financial freedom to do precisely that. Maybe one day someone will have the courage to tackle those far-off days of pop revolution and trace the origins of their friendship and just why it ended so acrimoniously. There have been movies in the past, but no-one can say 1978's The Birth of The Beatles is a factual record of their roots. I suggest Let It Be is more accurate; it's all there to see as friendships fragment and the dream slowly dies. Maybe we'll never know the truth of what drove these two working-class lads to stardom and, eventually, to a personal and professional stand-off. And while 67-year-old McCartney continues to rewrite his past, it's guaranteed that the real truth will remain hidden from view.

Jay-Z And Beatles Rule Billboard Charts In the same week, the Beatles ? the only act with more #1 albums at 19 ? also storm back onto the charts with the reissuing of their remastered catalog. Though most Beatles albums are not eligible for the top 200 chart, which includes only releases from the past 18 months, a newly configured stereo box set lands at #15 on sales of 26,000 and the mono box set, Beatles in Mono, comes in at #40 on sales of 12,000. In total, Billboard reported that the Beatles catalog sold more than 626,000 copies, including the new reissues and older versions, a week after the catalog had moved a more modest 21,000 copies. The one-week total nearly equaled the year-to-date sales for the Beatles catalog (635,000). The Beatles rule the Pop Catalog chart, with nine of the top 10 albums and 16 of the top 20. The biggest seller in the reissue series was 1969's Abbey Road (89,000), followed by the iconic Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (74,000), The Beatles (60,000), Rubber Soul (58,000), Revolver (46,000) and Help! (#7, 39,000).

I Love You?) in stereo, wat best leuk is.

Paul McCartney fears of ending up like Di Monday, September 14, 2009, Washington (ANI): Sir Paul McCartney believes in slowing down his car whenever the paparazzi chase him lest he suffers the same fate as Princess Diana. The former Beatle confesses that Princess Diana?s car crash flashes before his eyes whenever he?s being tailed by the paparazzi. So, the singer has come with a ?polite? way to deal with the snappers instead of outrunning them. Contactmusic quoted him as saying: "Nobody's learned anything, so you find yourself in a high-speed car chase and you go, ?'I shouldn't be doing this. So you slow down, get out the car, (say), Hello gentlemen, would you like a picture?? Tags: paul mccartney, diana, beatles.

Remastered Beatles albums are better than ever, says Yoko Ono Ono speaks as Fab Four's entire collection is re-released today (September 9) Yoko Ono has told NME.COM that The Beatles' remastered back catalogue ? which is released worldwide today (September 9) ? makes the Fab Four's music sound better than ever. When asked which of the bands albums benefited the most from the remastering, Ono admitted that she couldn't choose, simply saying "all of them". Ono added that she thinks the band's latter, more studio-orientated albums will be the most interesting for fans to listen to. "Not so much the ones in the beginning, because they sort of sound like they did then ? they we're just there," she said. "But when it became a little bit more complex ? the latter albums ? the sound wasn't as clear and loud as what we're used to now, so the remastering really suits those records." Speaking in this week's issue of NME (out nationwide today), Paul McCartney revealed that he wants The Beatles' back catalogue to be made available digitally. McCartney was speaking to NME as part of this week's special issue devoted to The Beatles. Featuring 13 different covers ? one for each of the band's LP releases ? the issue is available on UK newsstands now. Each cover will be available to collect from the usual outlets except that of 'Magical Mystery Tour', which was originally released as a double EP in the UK. That cover is only available from the NME Store.

Sean Lennon: 'there's no pressure being a Beatle offspring' 01 October 2009 JOHN LENNON's musician son SEAN feels no pressure forging a career in the late legend's shadow, insisting no one can compete with THE BEATLES. The 33 year old is currently performing with his mother Yoko Ono's newly reformed Plastic Ono Band, as well as his own solo career. Although he is often compared to his dad, Sean insists he has never felt compelled to measure himself against his father's achievements. During an appearance on U.S. TV talk show The View - which included a performance his mother Yoko Ono - Lennon Jr. said, "I know when (people) see me, they see my father. I can't help (that) I look like him, I look like her (Ono). "But honestly I don't play music in terms of trying to compete with my dad because I don't think I could play if I did that. But I take comfort in knowing I'm not the only (musician) who will never be as successful as the Beatles."

Ono? Oh, yeah: At 76, Yoko has a new album & is exhibiting John's art By JONATHAN TAKIFF Philadelphia Daily News Almost 29 years have passed since an assassin's bullet took John Lennon. And it's been 17 years since Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, first curated and sent out "We All Shine On," a touring exhibit of Lennon's artwork that offers a "look into his mind." Created in his post-Beatles years living with Ono and their son, Sean, the work has a quick, sketchy nature that seems both innocent and true. Done with pen and black ink, with some drawings later washed in color by Ono, the art occasionally reflects darkly on John's self-image and sense of isolation. More often it seems quite whimsical, especially in a series of animal drawings created to entertain Sean. And in its most powerful moments, the work celebrates, as did his latter-period music, universal themes like the purity of love ("Two Virgins"), the joys of parenthood ("Beautiful Boy") and our purpose in the big scheme - to not just "Imagine" a better world but also to seize the moment and effect change, with "Power to the People." Only one or two new pieces are added each year to the 100-piece touring exhibit. Yet, curiously, the Lennon art show has again become a very hot ticket thanks to all that Beatles buzz newly created by remastered editions of the band's albums (2.5 million copies sold worldwide the first week out) and that new "The Beatles: Rock Band" video game. The latter is getting hordes of young and old alike into the act, playing along with the Fab Four on game-controlling faux guitars, drums and microphones. "People have been lining up for 45 minutes to an hour to get in and see this exhibit," said show spokesman Rudy Siegel. Today through Sunday, "We All Shine On - The Artwork of John Lennon" is on display at 106 Kings Highway East, in Haddonfield, N.J., with suggested $2 admission donation benefiting the Food Bank of South Jersey. Some limited-edition Lennon prints are available for purchase at prices ranging from $200 to $20,000. Nor does it hurt that the 76-years-young Ono is still willing to get on the phone to chat up the show, the game and other projects like her brand new, yet true-to-the-code album, "Between My Head and the Sky," produced by son Sean with a mixed crew of Japanese and American rock and jazz musicians cranking it behind the sung-shrieked-spoken Onoisms. Q: It would seem that John's visual art work - and your own, varied projects - are treated with more respect nowadays. Do you think that's true? A: John was a very good artist, but most people thought he was just a rocker. There was a kind of disrespect for his art work. It was hard for him to get gallery exhibits. Now people are starting to see there really is an artist there. As for me, getting more understanding, it's very gratifying. I'm very thankful I'm still alive to see it. The kind of thing I was doing initially and now, it has a lot to do with art history, art movements. With time, people can see that. Q: You've always been into participatory art, conceptual art, art of the imagination. Do you think a hands-on creation like "The Beatles: Rock Band" is true to all that? Have you played the game? And what else are you into lately? A: I think "Rock Band" is beautiful and kind of au courant. It's an art work of today and the future. Have I played the game? Not really. One thing I'm into is the Imagine Peace Tower, which I set up in Iceland. I go there every year on John's birthday. The idea is that people are to look at it, imagine it and send their wishes. It's very strong. If you believe, the beam of light it projects goes all the way to the sky, and it's a message to the universe. Q: You're still doing that controversial, primal, high-pitched chanting thing on the new album, especially on the first track, "Waiting for the D Train." What's that all about? Your trademark? A: [Laughing] Some people said to me, "Don't put this in the beginning. People will think it's all that way." But what can I say? I have this rebellious streak in me, which didn't help me for the past decades. If it turns out to be my trademark, I accept that in a way. I'm trying to show the reality of a woman's voice. This is a man's society. They think women should have two or three voices. They forget we created the human race and, to have done that, we have to have a strong voice. Q There are a couple of songs on the album that seem to be referencing John - "Memory of Footsteps" and "I'm Going Away Smiling." Was he on your mind? A: "Memory" is not about John, not about anybody really, but it could be. "I'm Going Away Smiling," it's touch and go. The emotion, the inspiration, came from what I've experienced. Q: Listening to the Beatles' music on the great-sounding new disks, looking at the catalog of John's artwork and listening to new songs of yours like "Moving Mountains" and "Feel the Sand," I'm struck by how basic, how simplistic so many of the messages seem in today's harsh world. Does "All We Are Saying Is Give Peace a Chance" still work for you? A: Unlike the work of most other groups, which comes and goes, I think the Beatles' message is still very important. Goodness is something we want to revive. And, fortunately, we're all still a bit naive, aren't we? We should save some of that in ourselves. We're getting too cynical. I don't think we should be saying, "The time is up." We can still make this planet into a beautiful planet. And the world is going to go on. "We All Shine On, the Artwork of John Lennon," 106 Kings Highway East (at Chestnut Street), Haddonfield, N.J., 5-9 p.m today, 11 a.m.-7 p.m. tomorrow, noon-7 p.m. Sunday. $2 donation benefits The Food Bank of South Jersey. Directions, 856-216-7253. Show info, 888-ART-1969.

unusual birthday present for John Lennon - moon crater named in his honor October 9, Beatles Examiner Steve Marinucci In a somewhat dubious announcement, the International Lunar Geographic Society announced today that a crater on the Earth moon Luna has been renamed to honor John Lennon. The crater, located in the Moon?s Lacus Somniorum (?Lake of Dreams?) district, has been given the designation as the John Lennon Peace Crater on the occasion of his 69th birthday. It was previously known as Daniell D, and is located at 37.0º North (latitude) and 25.8º East (longitude) on the so-called Earthside of the moon. It measures approximately six kilometers in diameter, with a depth of about 990 meters. The so-called John Lennon Peace Crater is part of the Daniell crater group, named for John Frederic Daniell (1790-1845), a London-born physicist, meteorologist and professor of chemistry. It is the largest of three satellite craters to Daniell, and rests in the heart of the Moon?s Lake of Dreams. The International Lunar Geographic Society, previously known as the Lunar Republic Society, advocates privatized exploration, settlement and development of Earth?s Moon. On their website the Lunar Registry Society, the group behind the LGS, offers land plots on the moon for sale. No, we're not kidding. The Beatles: Rock Band bevat al meerdere nummers van het bekende Beatles album, zoals ?Come Together?, ?Something?, ?Here Comes The Sun? en ?The End?. Gamez
