Birthday....Thanks so much for such a great explanation.... It was so much better that I could have hoped.... I understand it so much better now... Great info!! It was really interesting about the TARDIS Police Boxes from the pre cell phone days! It sounds like Russell Davis did such a brilliant job all around. I am going to get those boxed sets from 2005 onwards. I know what you mean about the challenged sets from the earlier episodes.... The first Star Trek had some pretty shaky sets also.... wobbly stars in the sky and such Still if the stories are good, then imagination takes over. Interesting about the two hearts.... In the last show I saw, I believe there was some comment about how he had only one heart.... I didn't understand that, until now.. It was the show where the Dalecks tried to destroy the TARDIS in some type of fire, as well as trying to throw some woman in the fire... not sure if it was Sarah Jane Smith. It was the hardest show to follow, but now if I see it again, I'll understand it more. If I start with the boxed sets, then it will help quite a bit, I'm sure Thanks again for being so thorough on your informative description of the show! Do you know what the BEEB was referring to?
Hi there, glad to be of help. The episode you're referring to was probably The Stolen Earth/Journey's End. It was the last episodes of Season 4 before the year of specials, and probably the episode with the most amount of continuity in it. Most of the companions from the past 5 years were brought back to fight a huge battle against Davros and the Daleks. I can understand you being confused if you'd not seen the show before. I think it was Donna who was being thrown into the fire inside the TARDIS. I hope you enjoy the boxsets and the new season with Matt Smith. Let us know what you think! By the way, the "Beeb" is what we affectionately call the BBC over here sometimes. It's just slang, but because the first two initials are BB, it's easier to say Beeb instead!!

Did the first episode of the new season air in the US last night? What did everyone think? It would be great if we got the new episodes at the same time. We've now had the first 3 in the UK. I really liked episode 2, very different with a clever, thought-provoking story. Episode 3 last night was quite disappointing though, not awful, but a long way short of the first two episodes, but did have a very interesting last few minutes - make sure you watch right up until the credits start is all I'm saying.....

It did indeed, Birthday!!! I very much wanted to post about the season opener last night. However, one of our moderators have indicated that "US members have asked that plot-line details are not posted ahead of that broadcast." Knowing that it was not me that made this request, I thought perhaps I would wait until this afternoon to post comments, allowing that member(s) the opportunity to see the episode during rebroadcast last night/this afternoon. I will say that my children and I absolutely LOVED it!!! I cannot wait to post about one scene in particular...it was fabulous!!!

It certainly would be!!! I've always thought this, and continue to hope that this will come to be.

Very surprised to learn of this reaction...so sorry that you were disappointed. Hope everyone enjoyed this episode as much as we did...more later!

Glad you all enjoyed it so much TLP. It was a great opening episode, wasn't it! Look forward to discussing it with you later. Understand about the re-runs today and not wanting to spoil it til everyone's seen the episode. Episode 3 wasn't bad last night, it was just a bit lightweight and knock-a-bout considering the nature of the villain. It did have a few great moments, but perhaps lacked the sense of menace it should have had. Won't say more til you see it though - and the last few seconds were really intriguing for the underlying story behind the whole season. Remember to pay attention til the end. Shaping up to be an interesting arc through the season, I think, but not sure where it's going yet. I really liked Episode 2 last week. Hope you enjoy this one too. Very thought-provoking with some good twists. Going to hide under the bed now, because your children's favourites are coming back next week.

The series arc hint you saw at the end of episode 3 was also present at the end of episode two - perhaps you blinked? Oh no ... blinking is episode 4 - and you say 5? More importantly - date for diary the 5th of June see the download release of a PC computer game based on this current incarnation of The Doctor with Amy along as assistant. Called Doctor Who - The Adventure Games This news featured after this weeks episode. They've had Doctor Who PC games before but never before announced with such relish - they've been simple Flash games though - this promises to be something much bigger. I wonder if there's more about this on the BBC web-site? - I'll check.. Yes: http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/dw/news/bulletin_100417_01/Fight_the_Daleks The first of four such games. Martin

Nice one, Martin! I can't believe I missed that at the end of episode 2! Will have to go back and check it on i-player. Without giving anything away, how did you rate Episode 3 last night? I've seen some die-hard fans panning it on-line since last night, but if it was meant as tribute to a certain type of movie, then I suppose it succeeded in recreating that feel. Not sure it was suited to the villain though. Yes, the games look great, don't they. My kids are excited about that. Apparently they feature brand new stories too that won't appear in the main series. Hopefully they'll be available via BBC America for our US friends too.

More about the games from http://gallifreynewsbase.blogspot.com (I've cut and pasted some of the text, because for US viewers they might see some spoilers about Episodes 2 and 3 if they go to this site, as it's current with the UK showing times). Really good site for Doctor Who news about the current and classic series. Happy to edit this post to fit better with forum rules if that's best though.
The BBC has announced the production of four new 'interactive episodes' of Doctor Who which will be available from the official website, bbc.co.uk/doctorwho. These four new adventures will take the form of downloadable computer games available for PC and Mac, in which players assume control of The Doctor and Amy as they embark on new adventures which complement the new TV series. The games have been produced by a team drawing on the very best talent from TV and gaming. The interactive episodes are executive produced by Steven Moffat, Piers Wenger, Beth Willis and Anwen Aspden from BBC Wales Interactive, alongside Charles Cecil, one of videogaming's most revered creators. The games are being developed by Sumo Digital, one of the UK's best game designers. Stories and scripts are by Phil Ford, who co-wrote The Waters Of Mars and James Moran who has written for Torchwood. The project has been commissioned for BBC Online by the Vision Multiplatform team, headed up by Simon Nelson, and is being driven by BBC Wales Interactive. Matt Smith and Karen Gillan have been digitally recreated in-game, and have provided full voice-overs. Music has been provided by TV series composer Murray Gold. An additional cast will portray original characters and classic enemies. Steven Moffat, executive producer, Doctor Who, says Children don't just watch Doctor Who, they join in. They make up games, invent their monsters, create their own stories. Now, there's something else ? now, they can be The Doctor in brand-new episodes. By developing these games alongside the new TV series, we've been able to weave exciting narrative strands with the very finest game design to create a new kind of Doctor Who, which can be enjoyed by the whole family. Piers Wenger, Head of Drama, BBC Wales, and executive producer, Doctor Who, added There aren't 13 episodes of Doctor Who this year, there are 17 ? four of which are interactive. Everything you see and experience within the game is part of the Doctor Who universe. We'll be taking you to places you've only ever dreamed about seeing ? including locations impossible to create on television. Simon Nelson, head of BBC multiplatform in Vision, said: A few years ago, we couldn't have dreamt of commissioning such an innovative form of drama. By integrating the creation of these 'interactive episodes' with the development of the TV series, we've been able to create amazing two-hour dramas, in which you control the action. We've all imagined what it would be like to come face to face with some of the universe's most terrifying monsters ? now, viewers can find out for themselves. Establishing new forms of drama is exactly what the BBC should be doing. By aiming these 'interactive episodes' at the broad audience of the TV show ? unique in British television, in that it encompasses at least three generations ? we're aiming to encourage the family to gather round the PC or Mac in the same way they do the television. Driving computer literacy is a keystone of the BBC's public service remit and we expect Doctor Who ? The Adventure Games to be hugely popular in the homes of Britain this year. Only the BBC could produce such an innovative slice of new drama. We're offering two-hour original Doctor Who episodes to production standards on a par with the TV series, working with the very best creatives within the UK. We're hugely proud of Doctor Who ? The Adventure Games, which will establish new standards in interactive drama and allow families the country over to enjoy Doctor Who stories in unique and innovative ways. Anwen Aspden, executive producer, BBC Wales Online, concludes: Doctor Who ? The Adventure Games will offer the chance for Doctor Who fans to visit places they've only dreamed of, facing off against monsters they've previously had to imagine. Players will visit places which have never been shown on television ? and these will go on to define the look and feel of future TV episodes. The exact titles of the four episodes are being kept secret for the time being, but the four original stories will take players on a journey throughout time and space, including one location from the Doctor Who series which has never been seen before on screen. Players will encounter new and original monsters, in stories which form part of the overall Doctor Who canon. The first episode of Doctor Who ? The Adventure Games will be available to download for PC and Mac from bbc.co.uk/doctorwho in June 2010. Its title will be revealed at a special press event on 21 April in Sheffield.

I saw episode 3 as a scene-setter allowing some character building. We were spoiled with last years "specials" each had the need to be - and the budget to be - blockbusters to keep the brand alive while the number of episodes was limited. Now with 12-13 weekly stories - each back into a 60 minute time frame - we can't expect to have our socks blown off weekly. It did what it said on the can and left us with the promise of much more to come. Martin
-
Agreed - we were rather spoilt last year, weren't we. It's interesting that the kind of forums where they were saying last night after Episode 3: "Doctor Who is finished", "I'll never watch it again" and "bring back Russell", were the same forums who were criticising Russell's era as being too overblown only last year! : I was underwhelmed last night, but still think there's plenty of promise in the Moffatt-Matt Smith partnership and thoroughly enjoyed Epiosdes 1 & 2. The next two episodes look "blinking good" too!

Well those types of comments could have been scripted by anyone with an ounce of nous - before the new series even started. They are so predictable... A stick-in-the-mud is always a stick-in-the-mud whatever the topic - the number of times Paul has been declared washed up and finished is nobody's business. Shame nobody told him The brand is bigger than any one single person or director - look at the off-shoot products that sell in millions: books, audio stories, cartoon series computer games - Torchwood - Sarah-Jane Adventures. All scripted by other authors, but somehow the editorial hand keeps it all coherent and logical. I must get back to our library soon, they must have a new batch of Doctor Who stories to borrow by now. All unique original story-lines never seen or commited to TV dramas. Martin

Just saw the new episode with the new Doctor - Matt, last night... I am getting hooked on this show... It's funny, but I had never seen a show with one of the companions yet. Last night was the first time... I liked that they had the synopsis first that explained so much. OK, so I'm thinking of going to iTunes to download one of the yearly installments.... I'm thinking I want to start on one, where David is the Doctor.... which one should I download first? Also, If I buy the hardcopy of the series from Amazon vs downloading on iTunes, are there any inserts or the like, that I would be missing if I download from iTunes, which is less expensive, BTW. Also, who is your favorite companion? I rather liked Amy... she is a bit of a spitfire...

I think the 3rd episode was atrocious, Egad! What happened to the writing. May have my vote for the worst episode ever. There was just sooo much wrong with it! I don't want to get into it, to spoil it for US where it hasn't been aired yet. But...man.... Podgie (Everyone knows it was the US that used the daleks as secret weapons and won the war!) Monkey

The first episode was fantastic?LOVED every minute of it!!! With so many changes this season, I was very much hoping the first thing that Moffat would do is embrace his younger audience??and this is exactly what he did!!! I felt if Moffat did not endear the eleventh Doctor to children within the first ten minutes of the first episode, they may never embrace the eleventh Doctor as they did the tenth. Job well done by Moffat!!! From the opening scene children were lured in and laughing within the first five minutes of the episode. The food scene in the kitchen was fabulous!!! ?You?re Scottish, fry something!? The Doctor was childlike in his manner of removing undesired food from his mouth, easily bonding with Amelia and children viewing at home. He was disarming, charming, funny, and most importantly, a warm and fuzzy security blanket wrapped around the children, protecting them as they travel along with him?wonderful!!! In the kitchen, Amy explained she doesn?t have a mum and dad, just an aunt. Later in her bedroom, she tells the Doctor that she used to hate apples, so her mum put faces on them, showing the Doctor the face carved on her apple. Looking at the apple, the Doctor replied, ?She sounds good, your mum.? Is it inferred that Amy now carves faces on her apples (as her mum once did), or is this a script mistake? The close-up shots of Amy and the Doctor?s eyes during the corner of your eye moments were fantastic! This allowed us to feel the apprehension and fear of the unknown that we may all relate to?excellent! At 11:30 the Doctor is desperately trying to get Amy to trust him for 20 minutes. Whilst his necktie is closed in the car door, he produces the carved apple to Amy for her inspection. As she reaches for the apple, I noticed that the face of her wristwatch is either turned over (steel back outward), or blocked out. Is this significant, or just a coincidence? Perhaps it was noted that the time on her watch didn?t match the eleventh hour, or perhaps the face simply flipped over, and it was viewed as inconsequential? ?Are you not going to turn your back?? ?Nope!? Having Amy remain looking as the Doctor changed clothing was great! This showed us that she?ll be cheeky?LOVED it!!! Showing all past Doctors in the eleventh Doctor?s final moment of completion was absolutely brilliant!!! This assured us that Matt Smith is indeed The Doctor!!! Amy?Strong and cheeky! LOVE that the Doctor has seen her as a child. She knows that he?ll always come back for her, and she trusts him. Seeing the TARDIS changes through her eyes was childlike wonder?BEAUTIFUL!!! I liked that the Doctor really wanted Amy to be impressed with the TARDIS. We now realize that he already cares about her opinion. Amy waited so long for the Doctor, and never stopped believing in him. I think she may have the potential to be his ultimate companion. Like the change in the music...gives the theme a nostalgic touch! If the first episode is any indication of what is to follow, this season is going to be absolutely delightful?cannot wait to see how it unfolds!!!

Triplets Love Paul:
Amy?Strong and cheeky!
You wrote about capturing the hearts of chldren in the first few minutes. That sequence with the food reminded me of the Winnie The Pooh storyline as Tigger discovers what he likes to eat but if borrowed that's fine by me. The first episode also grabbed adult males attention as her profession unfolded - the slightly too short policewomans skirt, the "innocent" elderly neighbour enquiries" Oh you're a policewoman now, you were a nurse last week ...... and a nun" watching it unfold that the little girl has had an interesting upbringing seeing psychiatrists over her obsession with The Raggedy Man (was it?) and seeing her neighbours recognise The Doctor from her drawings and models. I thought briefly the closing shot panning along her drawings and models ending on a a wedding dress was to suggest that she is emotionally obsessed with him. But the first line of the trailer at the end - "the night before my wedding, my childhood fantasy friend came and took me away" suggests there's a boyfriend to meet sometime and romantic conflicts to follow - is the boyfriend the male nurse from episode one I wonder? - he was introduced as her boyfriend in episode one but it seems at that time it appeared that he carried that tag at her sufferage rather than a strong love bond... There were hints of something evil to come in the rantings of Prisoner Zero, I'll have to try to find out the words... Rather like the Oods forecast that David's song was nearing it's end that ran through last year. Got it: when the Pandorica opens and silence will fall... Martin

I love Amy.... she is very cheeky GREAT! The drawings and models were a very nice touch..... I didn't realize that the time machine isn't that accurate with time (or is it... but he just miscalculated?) It was a bit strange that he didn't realize he was so late in returning.... and this perhaps caused poor Amy be wearing all those different costumes now.... The food scene was great! I thought that the wedding dress was showing that she was going to marry someone, but when he asked her if she was doing anything and to go with him, she agreed, leaving some poor boyfriend at the altar?! I can see that I am going to have to watch this much closer and maybe several times... Should I just skip the 3rd episode and say thanks for the warning? Nowords... I thought you were a priest at a missionary... didn't you have a website like that once? hmmmm
