I found the trailer at the end of the US showing on BBC America very bizarre. Made it seem that the next episode was Cybermen and Daleks. I now realise that it wasn't a show trailer, but a trailer for the upcoming season. I do have to admit that I like Amy (Amelia?) Pond. Much better than the last two companions for me. Podgie (Not sure anyone can compare to Billy though) Monkey

II thought that the wedding dress was showing that she was going to marry someone, but when he asked her if she was doing anything and to go with him, she agreed, leaving some poor boyfriend at the altar?!
That's why she asks before stepping into the Tardis "Can you get me back by the morning?" - her apparent wedding day. She's had 14 years or so to get to understand the power of a time machine - mind you she's also learnt on two seperate occasions already that they can be very unreliable. On the whole, the Tardis hasn't usually been used for precision time work the Doctor's often taken an assistant off for a beach-side holiday on some exotic planet to arrive in a war zone elsewhere. Some have speculated the Tardis has an inner sense of where and when he's needed next - rather crucial concept really to explain how he jumps from problem situation to problem situation. Indeed, in one of the trailers Matt Smith is seen outside facing the Tardis saying joyously "What have you got for me this time?....." Don't fret over episode 3 it's a fun enough tale and seems to set the scene for other stories later down the line. We were rather spoilt last year with big budget specials only - we're back to weekly stories now - shorter format that needs more compression and less time for the tale to unfold. For the more complex tales double episodes with a "cliff-hanger" end to part1 is the order of the day - and apparently episodes 4 & 5 are such a tale. Martin

You wrote about capturing the hearts of chldren in the first few minutes. That sequence with the food reminded me of the Winnie The Pooh storyline as Tigger discovers what he likes to eat but if borrowed that's fine by me.
"Yuuuuuck!!!!!! Tiggers don't like hunny!!!" Hadn't thought of this...sweet analogy!

I thought briefly the closing shot panning along her drawings and models ending on a a wedding dress was to suggest that she is emotionally obsessed with him. But the first line of the trailer at the end - "the night before my wedding, my childhood fantasy friend came and took me away" suggests there's a boyfriend to meet sometime and romantic conflicts to follow - is the boyfriend the male nurse from episode one I wonder? - he was introduced as her boyfriend in episode one but it seems at that time it appeared that he carried that tag at her sufferage rather than a strong love bond...
When I watched the panning shot of the dolls that Amelia had made leading to Amy's wedding dress, I didn't get the feeling that she was emotionally obsessed with the Doctor. I immediately thought that she was experiencing cold feet due to an impending wedding day, finding herself taking a last walk down Memory Lane. She kept her treasured belonging in the suitcase under her bed as a child. These dolls are now viewed from suitcases opened and strewn about a table, etc.. It was a quick shot, but I believe that I counted four different sets of dolls. Earlier on, Amy indicated to the Doctor that his appearance in her young life brought her to four psychiatrists. When asked why, she said that they didn't believe that he was real. Young children receiving psychiatric care are often asked to make dolls for use to act out their emotions. When I saw four different sets of dolls, I thought this was indicating her experience with four different psychiatrists (?). I assumed that Amy was now engaged to the male nurse. I feel he wants to be her boyfriend/engaged to her. When she introduces him to the Doctor, she introduces him as her friend. He interjected that he is her boyfriend. This made me feel that he wanted to be identified as her boyfriend. I thought he was slightly jealous that she had him dress up as the Doctor when they were kids. He appeared to be very unnerved to find that the Doctor was indeed real. I had the feeling that Amy would be engaged whilst traveling with the Doctor. I was thinking that Rose, Martha and Donna were all engaged whilst traveling with him, weren't they???

There were hints of something evil to come in the rantings of Prisoner Zero, I'll have to try to find out the words... Rather like the Oods forecast that David's song was nearing it's end that ran through last year. Got it: when the Pandorica opens and silence will fall...
I thought this had to do with the crack in Amelia's wall/crack in the universe...wasn't this the crack that was shown on the radar in the TARDIS? I am going to have to watch this again tonight!

After the show ended, I was waiting for the typical weekly preview for the next episode. After watching the season trailer, I realized that I had somehow drifted off, and missed the weekly preview. I actually tuned back in just after 1 am in an effort to see the preview. Once again I saw only the season trailer. I then realized that they hadn't shown the weekly episode preview!

Just saw the new episode with the new Doctor - Matt, last night... I am getting hooked on this show... It's funny, but I had never seen a show with one of the companions yet. Last night was the first time... I liked that they had the synopsis first that explained so much. OK, so I'm thinking of going to iTunes to download one of the yearly installments.... I'm thinking I want to start on one, where David is the Doctor.... which one should I download first? Also, If I buy the hardcopy of the series from Amazon vs downloading on iTunes, are there any inserts or the like, that I would be missing if I download from iTunes, which is less expensive, BTW. Also, who is your favorite companion? I rather liked Amy... she is a bit of a spitfire...
Hi there. If you want to start with David's Doctor, then the first episode to feature him is "The Christmas Invasion", which went out as a Christmas special in 2005. The first episode of David's first season (the boxset's called Series 2 as Christopher Eccleston was the Doctor in Series 1) was called "New Earth", but start with "The Christmas Invasion", it's a fun romp with a message. The boxsets are worth getting because of the copious amounts of bonus material, behind the scenes, documentaries, commentaries, etc, and David's own personal video diaries. The boxset for Series 2 includes "The Christmas Invasion" and a 6-minute short that aired between Series 1 and 2 (in the UK we use the word "series" to mean both "season" and "series" for some reason). This short features a scene set immediately after Chris's regeneration at the end of Series 1 and the opening scene of "The Christmas Invasion". You can watch it here:
You don't necessarily need it to understand the start of "The Christmas Invasion", but it helps. Enjoy the episodes and let us know what you think! Glad you enjoyed "The Eleventh Hour". Amy's certainly feisty, isn't she! I'd like to see a bit of vulnerability from her at some point in the season, but she's shaping up to be a great companion so far. -
Triplets Love Paul:
If the first episode is any indication of what is to follow, this season is going to be absolutely delightful?cannot wait to see how it unfolds!!!
Fantastic review TLP, thanks for taking the time to post it. You made me relive the magic of the opening episode all over again while reading that. Thank you. I'm really glad the triplets loved Matt so quickly. Yes the opening scenes were fun, weren't they - and I thought the garden scene was truly magical and so beautifully lit with the light coming out of the TARDIS into the moonlight. And yes, the images of all the past doctors was a great touch, wasn't it, nicely underlining that Matt is indeed the Doctor. I also loved that scene on the village green, where the Doctor played back in his mind all the things he'd seen and worked out what was wrong with the whole scene. Apparently they filmed that by taking hundreds of still photographs in sequence across the set. Can't wait to hear what you think of Episode 2, scarier than episode 1, with a strong performance from Amy, a bit of fun in a rather disgusting setting (!) in the middle of the episodes (your kids will squirm and laugh at the same time!) and plenty of mystery, suspense and twists leading to a thought-provoking and moving ending.

You asked about my reference to Steven Moffatt's quotes about said villains in this month's Doctor Who Magazine. DWM says: "....all the more menacing than ever before. Let's face it they were pretty scary the first time around, but in these stories they're imbued with a terrible nameless malevolence. 'Even I didn't know how bad they were til I wrote this,' shudders Steven." More from Steven on just how scary it's going to get here: http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/cult/s7/doctor-who/news/a215717/moffat-promises-scarier-doctor-who.html

Rose was dating Mickey when she started travelling with him, although the relationship eventually fizzled out. Martha was single when she met the Doctor and had a crush on him, although he didn't feel the same way. After she left the TARDIS at the end of Season 3, she did get engaged to a real medical Doctor and was wearing a ring during her appearances in Season 4. Donna was due to get married when she met the Doctor, but her finance was killed by the Racnoss after betraying her. When Donna joined the Doctor as a full-time companion in Season 4, she was therefore single. She was seen getting married at the end of the last Christmas special. Hope that helps!

Martin thank you so much for all this great info on the Tardis... I did notice that the Doctor does seem to show up just in time for all hell to break loose, in the Universe The little snip about the angels seemed really creepy... not sure now if it was a past show or will be in the future.... There was one scene where the Tardis disappeared and there they were with the Angels in a circle. Was that the Doctor who was able to make the Tardis disappear? Sorry for so many questions... I just don't know everything that he is capable of doing.... I hope this show grows here in the States, so we can catch up to the same time frame that you all are on in the UK. TLP I really liked your insight on the 4 sets of dolls and the reference to the 4 psychiatrists that she mentioned seeing.... that went by kind of fast.... funny when the boyfriend realized that the doctor was real... Thank you everyone for explaining it all so well... I am eagerly waiting for the second show, and I'm not sure when that starts here in the States... I'm thinking Saturday maybe?

Hi love2travel, no problems, glad the info was helpful. You could start with the first season since the relaunch in 2005 (known as Series 1 if you're looking for the boxset). It features Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor, travelling with Rose. At the end he regenerates into David Tennant, leading into that short You Tube clip I posted. The next episode was then "The Christmas Invasion" which features at the beginning of the Series 2 boxset. Doctor Who Magazine is a great read - it's been going now for 30 years, setting the world record for the longest-running magazine devoted to a TV show. It's overtaken magazines like SFX to be the best-selling sci-fi mag in the UK. While it's licenced by the BBC and therefore has regular access to David, Matt, Karen, Russell and Steven and guest stars, it's rare in that it maintains editorial control. So if it doesn't like an episode it can say so. It has set reports, previews, interviews with past Doctors, etc. Yes that scene with the angels was from a past episode - a Season/Series 3 episode called "Blink", widely regarded as one of the very best Doctor Who episodes of all time - and in TLP's household (and ours) as one of the scariest!! I don't want to spoil that episode for you by giving away why the TARDIS dematerialises, but make sure you catch the episode - it's a classic - and the angels are coming back soon! And finally, yes, according to http://www.bbcamerica.com/shows/doctor-who/index.jsp the second episode of this new season airs tomorrow night in the US on BBC America.

All I can say about tonight's episode is: Start hiding the couch now US friends! The you-know-whos are back - and then some!!!! Absolutely superb episode (ep 4) - funny in places, but absolutely terrifying. Great performance from Amy in particular. Matt was also excellent, considering this was actually the first episode they actually filmed for this season. It shows he'd already nailed the part very quickly. And great cliff-hanger too..... Hope everyone in the US enjoyed episode 2 "The Beast Below" tonight.

Great news Martin. Good luck with getting tickets. Think we might try too. I know with all the Proms concerts they keep a certain number of tickets back and sell them on the day. There was a huge queue for these tickets last time though, so you have to be early to stand any chance.

Think we might try too.
Check out the link above then - you can set up an account, AND set up your concert tickets selection ahead of the 08.00 hrs start on-line - you can hit one button to get in at the very launch on the 4th May. You cannot "Submit" unless you are on-line at that very moment but having done name and address, seat area and number of seats ahead of the sale opening it's as quick as possiblly can be. If a real Prom enthusiast you can set up multiple concerts ahead in the same way and submit all requests at the same moment. Martin
