Not too long to go then. Don't forget to tell us what you think. I hope your three enjoy it too. I should add that even though it's written by Stephen Moffatt, and there's plenty of suspense, it's not as scary as Blink, although the trailers for Episode 2 look VERY scary indeed!

Apologies to my fellow Yanks, Whovians, Macca, and Beatlefans. I couldn't wait the fortnight to see it on the BEEB USA, I went right to YouTube to see it. I got so anxious to ask my questions. I will watch it on the 17th, too.

Hi TLP have you seen a trailer for the season yet? Don't want to say too much in case you haven't.
-
Hi Birthday! I have seen the trailer and the teaser for the new season. Yes, my children (particularly my one daughter) are dreading the moment! There was a collective, "Oooooh Nooooo!!!" the first time that we watched the trailer! This evening, BBC America had a nice clip with Matt Smith. Last Friday night we watched his interview with Jonathan Ross, learning a bit about the TARDIS and sonic screwdriver changes. We are trying our best to avoid the other videos currently hosted on BBC America and YouTube until after we've seen the first episode. Temptation is everywhere!!!

The End of Time... what a surprise ending!!! The effects with the light streaming out of him were amazing... and then.... surprise.... that shocker! Just wondering.... where is the best place to go, to catch up on it all. I can't follow all of the discussion here...

Hi Love2travel. I assume you're in America? The new season starts on BBC America in the next few weeks. There's a new Doctor and a new companion, so no time like the present to dive in and enjoy the show. The producers have taken the opportunity of the new doctor and the semi-hiatus last year to give the show a bit of a re-launch, so new viewers will be able to pick up the show as if watching it for the first time, while still catering for those of us who've been fans for longer than we care to remember! They're able to use the new companion to introduce the new doctor and his life to the viewers through her eyes. Basically Doctor Who's been around since 1963, so there's an awful lot to catch up on if you want to. There was a fair amount of continuity around in the David Tennant years, but now David's left and he has a new companion, you don't need to know all that, unless you want to get the DVDs (which as a fan of course I'd recommend!) All you really need to know is he's a 900-year-old Time Lord who travels around space and time in a time machine called the TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimensions In Space). That means each week is completely different as he visits a completely different time or planet. So the story-telling possibilities are endless. He has two hearts and can regenerate to save his life. However this means changing his appearance and, while he's the same man, he takes on a new personality - although his core values remain the same - love of adventure, huge curiosity, courage, loyalty and most of all a great respect for all life. Oh, and he's the last of his kind. The Time Lords were all destroyed in a terrible Time War against the Daleks. So he has a certain melancholy about him because of that. I'm not sure how available they are in the US, but a lot of the stories from the past are available in the UK on DVD on Amazon. If you want some suggestions where to start, let me know and I'll send you some. For a real fanboy's guide to Doctor Who, try the Doctor Who wiki - http://tardis.wikia.com/wiki/Doctor_Who_Wiki All you ever wanted to know, and far, far, far more besides!

'ello Birthday Yes, I'm in America... we only have BBC that I'm aware of...not sure what BEEB USA is, but I suppose I need to find that out too! I've seen the TARDIS on here and didn't realize what it was....that's actually what lead me to find it on BBC. I saw the TARDIS and recognized it, and tuned in...really glad that I did!! I really like David Tennent as the Doctor... will miss him, but I'm hoping there are reruns. Didn't know about the 900 yr old Time Lord. Not sure who the Aliens are either...they look like they are from Star Wars.... Still that one alien shows up and the Doctor always seems to get worried.... ? They are absolutely brilliantly written and I like that each show is so different from the previous....at least from what I've seen so far. Don't really like the evil guy that was just brought back to life, with the ring. Saw the episode where he brought all the spheres to Earth that killed off a good portion of the population. I don't really know where to start... what do you suggest? Will check out the link now too, thanks so much! I love sci fi and this show seems to have incorporated so many aspects.... Outer Limits, Star Wars, Ray Bradbury, Issac Asimov, Frank Heinlein, Star Trek.... just love it!! Thanks so much for the link. I had no idea that it went back so far. I suppose I would want to get the David Tennent DVD's first... what do you think?

For dedicate Whovians the BBC has launched a new series of web-pages opening up achive material and documents from the show here; http://www.bbc.co.uk/archive/doctorwho/index.shtml and this as well: http://www.bbc.co.uk/archive/changingwho/index.shtml Causing a mild stir here in the UK is the revelation of a document stating that the original "transformation" concept was based on a bad LSD acid trip nightmarish in nature. Hi there, sorry I haven't got back before, I was in London for a couple of days with work. I'd start with the new era of Doctor Who from 2005 onwards when it returned to our screens after a 16-year absence (before that it was on virtually non-stop from 1963-89!). Top British TV writer Russell T Davies, who was a long-time Doctor Who fan, was allowed to bring the show back as he had so much clout in the industry after a string of very successful dramas on UK TV. He could basically name his next project when hired by the BBC and chose to make Doctor Who. And it was great that it was a fan who was put in charge of the show, because he understood the show and what made it work. He didn't reboot it, he took the best bits and updated it for a 21st Century audience. He kept the continuity. The Doctor is the same man (albeit regenerated several times!) as the first Doctor back in 1963. He still travels in the TARDIS, which looks like a Police Box on the outside and he still travels with a companion (who basically represents the viewer and can ask the Doctor to explain things). Russell understood that every regeneration offers the chance for a re-boot anyway, so there was no need to start completely from scratch. We're lucky the show was revived by him as it's maintained the history and mythos of the show, while introducing it to new fans, including a whole generation of children who'd never heard of it before. Russell brought back many of the iconic villains from the past like the Daleks, the Cybermen and the Master, as well as introducing a whole host of new ones. He even brought back one the Doctor's old companions, Sarah-Jane Smith, for a few guest appearances. The only thing he changed was to get rid of the rest of the Time Lords, so new viewers could concentrate on getting to know the Doctor, rather than a whole world of Time Lords with all their continuity and mythology. He created a backstory (set during the years when the show was off the air) of a huge Time War between the Time Lords and the Daleks. The Doctor was the only survivor and carried a lot of survivor guilt as a result and added a layer of pathos to the character that hadn't been there before. He was therefore alone in the universe with only his companion for company. The show was an enormous success in the UK, single-handedly reviving the tradition of family viewing. Since Doctor Who came back, our networks have developed a number of family friendly dramas, often with a mythological or sci-fi premise that all the family can watch together in the early evening. But it's all been since Doctor Who came back and started pulling in the viewers. Christopher Eccleston was the first Doctor in Russell's 5 years in charge. Sadly Chris decided to leave after just one season (despite the fact he was brilliant in the part) and David Tennant replaced him, becoming people's most loved Doctor of all time. David played the Doctor for a full 3 seasons plus a year of movie-length specials last year, resulting in his regeneration into Matt Smith. Steven Moffatt, one of the key writers, who's won some international sci-fi awards (Hugos) for his work on Doctor Who since 2005 has now taken over from Russell as showrunner. So, how to get into the show. Like I said before, Steven's taken advantage of the regeneration and new companion to introduce the character of the Doctor and his world to viewers as if from scratch. But cleverly he's kept plenty of nods in there for hardcore and long-term fans too. So if you don't know too much about the show, you can start from the new series and not feel lost. You'll get this on BBC America any day now. If you want to discover the past, start with the DVDs from the past 5 years - four full seasons and a year of specials - that should be five DVD boxsets, featuring Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant and helpfully entitled Series 1, 2, 3, 4 and Specials. You'll see the show in its modern incarnation with modern production values and techniques, modern acting styles and editing and of course CGI. Going further back, a lot of the stories from the first 8 Doctors are now available on DVD too. Be warned though that BBC budgets often didn't allow for expensive special effects, acting styles were different back in the 60s, 70s and 80s and editing was not as fast-paced as it is now. Doctor Who was also sometimes mocked for its wobbly sets. But given the budgets they had, the Doctor Who team were amazingly inventive and created new worlds every week, often coming up with new ways of filming out of sheer necessity. And we didn't know any different at the time, we just loved the stories. So if you can accept the technological limitations of the time, there's a lot of really good stories out there to enjoy on DVD. Tom Baker is the most famous and popular Doctor from the original years. His travels with Sarah-Jane Smith in particular are still incredibly popular. "Genesis of the Daleks" is a bit of a classic and worth getting on DVD as a starting point. If you want more recommendations on purchases from the show's original run, then let me know. (By the way, the TARDIS (which as you'll have seen is bigger on the inside than the outside!) is shaped like a Police Box. They used to have these in the UK between the 1920s and 1960s before mobile phones and police radios were invented. Basically they allowed police officers to phone for back-up and to lock up bad guys inside til a squad car arrived! The original series producers back in the 60s realised they couldn't afford to create a spaceship for the Doctor, so came up with the ingenious idea of a ship that changed its shape to fit in with its surroundings (a chameleon circuit!!) and could be smaller on the outside, than on the inside. Again lack of funds being the mother of invention, they decided that chameleon circuit had broken, leaving the TARDIS stuck as a police box after its visit to 1960s London, so they didn't have to change the exterior each week. Since then the Doctor has learnt how to repair the circuit, but has got so fond of the Police Box shape, he's decided to keep it! ).

Birthday....Thanks so much for such a great explanation.... It was so much better that I could have hoped.... I understand it so much better now... Great info!! It was really interesting about the TARDIS Police Boxes from the pre cell phone days! It sounds like Russell Davis did such a brilliant job all around. I am going to get those boxed sets from 2005 onwards. I know what you mean about the challenged sets from the earlier episodes.... The first Star Trek had some pretty shaky sets also.... wobbly stars in the sky and such Still if the stories are good, then imagination takes over. Interesting about the two hearts.... In the last show I saw, I believe there was some comment about how he had only one heart.... I didn't understand that, until now.. It was the show where the Dalecks tried to destroy the TARDIS in some type of fire, as well as trying to throw some woman in the fire... not sure if it was Sarah Jane Smith. It was the hardest show to follow, but now if I see it again, I'll understand it more. If I start with the boxed sets, then it will help quite a bit, I'm sure Thanks again for being so thorough on your informative description of the show! Do you know what the BEEB was referring to?
