Doctor Who

Thanks so much Martin.... I can't wait to get my boxed set!!! I have had that sense about the Daleks from clips I've seen and was anticipating something fierce, then when the Doctor started bashing one... well, they still seemed so tame.... I was expecting some more along the line of some Mars Attacks moments... but I think that might be in the earlier versions... The new Daleks were very polished looking.... I kind of like some of the more rudimentary looking ones that I've seen in the photos from earlier shows. That's part of the fun of early sci - fi.... going back to Flash Gordon... That Amy Pond just jumps right in there, doesn't she.... I wonder if the earlier companions were quite as involved as she is.... I like her character I guess I am looking forward to the Angels.... It seems that here in the US, they are playing the last two shows back to back. It's good, because I can catch what I missed the second time around.

Martin's summed it up pretty well there. The seasons since Doctor Who returned in 2005 have used the Daleks to far more devastating effect, both for the universe as a whole and the Doctor generally. The Churchill episode was much more low-key. The first half was a play on their usual dominance, turning that on its head and making them servile. The second half was the launch of a whole new Christmas range of toys.....err, sorry ....the launch of a whole new pure breed of Daleks. It's worth pointing out that the Daleks were created in 1963, when memories of the Second World War were fresh in people's minds. They were clearly modelled on the Nazis with their dreams of a master race and total domination.

Just seen Episode 5 (Weeping Angels part 2) as we were out last night and had to record it. I won't give anything away for our US friends, but all I can say is WOW!!!!!!!!!!! Absolutely stunning episode - scary, dark, thrilling, but very intelligent writing, leading to a stunning climax, with hints of things to come. And don't miss this episode if you want to understand the story arc running through Season 5. There's a lot more about the mythology underpinning the season throughout this episode. I'll be re-watching this episode again later this week for sure - it was THAT good! And The Guardian newspaper in the UK agrees with me:
I'm just going to come right out and say it. Flesh and Stone can lay credible claim to being the greatest episode of Doctor Who there has ever been. That's better than Genesis Of The Daleks and better than City Of Death and better than Tomb Of The Cybermen and, yes, better than Blink. It's just ridiculously good - so much that there's scarcely any point in picking out moments because there was an iconic sequence every couple of seconds.

Sounds great!!! So happy to learn that you enjoyed the episode, Jeremy! Cannot wait to see this...looking forward to it!!! Really wish that we were not two episodes behind!

Wish we were all watching it at the same time too Anita. Don't know why they do that, when both channels are owned by the BBC. What did you make of the Victory of the Daleks episode then? I still can't get over a Dalek saying: "Do you want a cup of tea?"

Doesn't look good for the Doctor Who Prom ticket sale Ticket sales for the whole Prom series opens up at 08.00 hrs still 90 minutes away. To handle demand the Royal Albert Hall server has been set up with a virtual waiting room to accomodate demand. That virtual waiting room is full up already.. So I'm waiting for a space in a waiting room even before getting to ask for my specific concert. I suppose everyone blocking that room will flood into the booking area after the sale opens at 08.00 and at least I'll get into a queue. I appreciate that thousands of Prom goers will not be wanting the Doctor Who Prom but it is one of their more popular family concerts Still hope remains until it doesn't.. Need a sonic screwdriver right now. Martin

Promising.. 214 in queue

I should have more faith Four seats in the Circle safely bought - my first choice - safely up and away from the Daleks The purchase was more eventful than it needed to be as my bank automated fraud detection service kicked in incorrectly and blocked my debit card. Luckily my wife was at home and a switch to her card saw the timed transaction completed in time. When I'm chilled out, I'll give the bank a call and advise them of my feelings Just checked back to the RAH web-site - the queue is now 4754 long to enter the site to do anything - even view a seating chart. Even funnier was the Dalek actually serving the cup of tea! The triplets LOVED when the New Paradigm Daleks emerged...No doubt your sons enjoyed this part as well? They also enjoyed seeing the inferior Daleks disintegrated by their own kind...classic Dalek evil! A bit of a Star Wars feel this week...the professor's hand and the space scene. Matt seemed less comfortable as the Doctor this week. This left me wondering about the filming schedule. Perhaps this episode was filmed earlier than the first? I think I will have a look around to see if I may locate that schedule. Amy...It was nice to see the Doctor being a bit assertive with her, indicating for her to be silent. I didn't like that she questioned the Dalek against the Doctor's wishes. I did like the bit when she leaned into the professor and asked, "Ever fancied someone you know you shouldn't...Hurts, doesn't it...But a kind of a good hurt." Everyone may relate to that feeling...it was a clever touch! It will be interesting to learn why she doesn't remember the Daleks. And of course the crack...

Actually, surprising at it seems, the Daleks episode was probably the 4th or 5th to be filmed. They started by filming the Weeping Angels two-parter, possibly because of the guest star's availability (not sure if you know who's in it). They then filmed "The 11th Hour" second and then the rest of the season. So Matt should have been less confident in the Angels eps and more confident in the Daleks one. And yet it's been the other way round. He was really good in Satuday's second part of the Angels story - Karen was simply superb. If you're looking for her to show some other sides of her character, she does in spades in the Angel episodes.
-
They really seem to be pushing Dr Who here in the States, tonite a back to back rerun of the Dalecks, which I enjoyed so much more the second time around.... funny how I missed how he was holding off the Dalecks with a cookie, threatening to blow up their ship! And then there was a replay of the Ultimate Guide, a walk thru of the show.... again... Maybe it will catch on more and we can both be watching the same show in the same week! On the Ultimate Guide, there is a scene where a blond woman with curly hair is landing the TARDIS.... is that one of the companions? I think I saw a preview for her on the Angels show.... Martin, so happy to hear you were able to get tickets for the Dr. Who Prom. I can't wait to hear about it!!! Am looking forward to seeing another side of Amy Pond, with the Angels

You are a wealth of Doctor Who information, Jeremy! I hadn't yet gone looking for that information...I really appreciate your input with regard to the filming sequence! I am looking forward to seeing another side of the companion character. I am still looking for the vulnerability and the femininity. For me, these traits in the companion are just as important as the strength and intelligence. I am very much hoping that these next two episodes will open those doors for this character.

That's great news that the publicity machine is doing so well in the US. I know Matt and Karen did a PR tour of the East and West coasts last month (I posted a few links earlier in this thread). I'd held off mentioning the woman in the clip you saw in case other US viewers didn't know she was coming back. But as she's now been shown, I can tell you that it's a character from one of the two-parters from David Tennant's era, called Professor River Song. The Doctor had not met River before - but she had clearly known him for a very long time, knew his real name and all about his life. The hazards of a friendship with a time-traveller - they keep meeting out of order!! River had to be careful not to reveal anything about the Doctor's future, for fear of upsetting the space-time continuum - a common problem, I find! She died at the end of the David Tennant episode, but of course he can't tell her when he meets her again in the Angels two-parter. Oh yeah, the bit with the cookie (we call that brand "jammie dodgers" in the UK). Classic Doctor, that. "I've got a TARDIS self-destruct device here!". :

Mine of useless information, that's me!! It's from reading Doctor Who Magazine every month that does it! Oh, and the first outdoor scene you'll see in Episode 4 was the first location filming they did for the new season, so there were photos in all the newspapers here last summer, of the new Doctor in his new outfit. You'll definitely see some vulnerability from Amy. As for femininity, well let's just say there's a moment at the end of Episode 5 when you might want to cover the triplets' eyes..... : ops: .....Stephen Moffatt used to write the sitcom "Coupling" is all I'm saying.....that scene has created quite a stir in the media over here.

With the retention of that much information readily available for recollection, you should be writing for Doctor Who Magazine, instead of reading it! Thank you for the filming location information, I'll be sure to pay close attention.

As you've already gathered, I welcome the vulnerability. For me, this will make the character more believable. As to the moment that you mention, today a friend happened to send an excerpt from a blog reviewing this episode. Knowing that my children are avid fans of Doctor Who, he thought that I should have a look at it. The review was shockingly direct with it's depiction of the scene, which as described, sounds anything but feminine. Needless to say, this has sparked the intensity of my interest. I am genuinely interested to see how closely this blog excerpt depicts the scene, or if it is simply being blown out of proportion. Based on your thoughts, I'm guessing not! The triplets are nearly eleven, and very mature for their age, but I'll hold the remote control in hand for a quick channel change should the scene unfold as described. Thanks so much for the heads-up, much appreciated! BTW, how did the scene go over with your boys? Hope you and your family enjoy this weeks episode!
-
There'll be no need to have the pause/channel changer handy - this show goes out directed at a family audience at prime time childrens entertainment time on the number one mainstream channel there's nothing there that'll embarass any parent. As always with Doctor Who writing - a particular desire is expressed in a manner which will float over many youngsters heads. The show ceertainly hasn't gone all late-night adult in the direction that Torchwood was scripted - if the Triplets are esy with some of Captain Jack (and occasionally for the purpose of the story-line, the other Torchwood cast members) shenanigans the Triplets should just laugh over this moment. It''s a lightener to relieve some of the more stressful moments of the rest of the episode - remembers this is weeping angel territory This "moment" is the end story moment - and is a form of cliff-hanger in it's own right - tune in next week to find out how it unfolds..... somehow I think circumstances will find Amy something else to focus her attention on. Martin

Hi Martin. You're right there's nothing approaching Torchwood territory! But the scene did remind me a bit of Stephen Moffatt's Coupling sitcom though, which I think he re-made again with a US cast on one of the American networks. I did feel a bit awkward for a second, watching it with my 9-year-old, but I think it went over his head. You're right it was definitely a moment of light relief after the terrors of the previous 45 minutes and nicely set up the next episode, continuing the season arc at the same time. Looking forward to Vampires in Venice, filmed on location in Croatia (another useless fact for you there Anita!! )
