Paul, Hampden Park, Glasgow, 20th June - ARCHIVE
-
Heres my review When I heard in March that Paul was coming to Glasgow in June my reaction was like brilliant when are tickets available?. But then my family all stared and thought oh dear! we will be on holiday on the day he performs, I said I will not miss this great opportunity so quick as a flash my family resheduled our holiday to the first two weeks in June so we will be home in time for the concert. When presale tickets came out a few days before general release my Dad booked 3 tickets for himself, Mum & I, we got really good seats down at the pitch so we were really happy now all we had to do was wait until the summer. We had a pretty good holiday up in the Outer Hebrides sad to leave but we were excited that on Sunday we will see Paul McCartney. From watching my Paul live DVD's many times I notice the audience wear Beatles tshirts so on the night before the concert I had trouble on what to wear but decided to wear my Beatles Ben Sherman shirt. The day on the concert I was very excited counting down the hours until the show started, we headed down to Glasgow and when we parked around the corner of the venue we couldn't believe how hot it was with the sun beaming down it looked like it will be a great day for the concert. We had arranged to meet my Mum's cousin who had a flat up the road so we had a chat and a drink. On arriving to Hampden Park we were all excited found our seats great spot and the venue was quickly filling up. I headed to the merchandise stall and bought myself a tour tshirt & programme before the show started just incase I wouldn't get time after the show. Sharleen Spiteri was the supportr act and she was really good, got the crowd going with Texas tracks. at 8pm we were told to head to our seats as a announcer said Paul McCartney will be on stage in 5 mins and at 8.10pm Paul & his band bounded on stage and the crowd went wild. Paul opened the show with Venus and Mars / Rockshow then jumping into Jet, Paul was on top form wearing a black jacket and then surprised all Scottish fans with a blue shirt with white braces. I got a tear in my eye during the performances of The Long & Winding Road, Here Today & Something (both tributes to John & George, My Mum & Dad really loved Paul's version of A Day In The Life and cutting to Give Peace A Chance Mum didn't expect that I told her to flash the peace sign in the air. The highlight of the show was Live & Let Die which blasted of with fireworks and Mull Of Kintyre with a fantastic pipeband. I really didn't want it to end I could of danced all night but sadly it was all over with Paul telling us 'You've been a great audience' and he finished the show with Sgt Pepper/The End. This was Paul's first gig in 20 years in Scotland since he last played in 1990 in the SECC. I do hope he will return soon and now I can really say I Saw Him Standing There.

Hmm, think you need to have a facebook account to see these, don't know how else to get the photos on here, any ideas?
If you copy and paste the link, and not just click on it, you should be able to see them, if anyone is interested. Christine

Great review on The Big Issue website: Paul McCartney Hampden Stadium 5/5 It?d be easy to make 68-year-old dad-rocking former Beatle Paul McCartney sound ridiculous ? he can?t resist lifting his guitar in the air at the end of every song (even when it?s actually a mandolin), he boogies on the spot, pointed fingers aloft like an embarrassing uncle and later he?s an Englishman waving a giant Saltire. But just because it?s easy doesn?t mean that it?s right. In fact, over a remarkable three hours McCartney energetically runs through some of the best pop music that the world has ever seen. A dynamo in blue shirt and white braces (they make another Saltire on his back), he?s a cruise missile of crowd-pleasing. Even his most unfashionable hits ? a giant cheesy version of ?Mull of Kintyre? complete with the Loretto school pipe band and (yet another) giant Saltire in the background, a stadium-sized singalong to ?Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da? ? are far more enjoyable than it?s ok to admit in polite company. Between songs there?s plenty of love for the Scottish crowd, but also some fantastic anecdotes. Few other acts could tell the story of how they ?had the good fortune? to know Jimi Hendrix. ?We put out Sgt Pepper on the Friday night,? says McCartney, after a growling rendition of the riff from ?Foxy Lady?, ?on the Sunday I went to see Jimi live. He?d learned the whole thing and opened with ?Sgt Pepper?s Lonely Hearts Club Band?. It was the greatest compliment he could?ve paid me.? Thanks to Jimi?s enthusiastic use of the whammy bar, McCartney continues, his guitar was dreadfully out of tune, so he started scanning the audience for Eric Clapton, who was desperately trying to duck out of sight. There?s a big natural guffaw as McCartney recalls Clapton?s horrified face. That?s all before he brings out the really big guns. Starting with ?Eleanor Rigby?, the last 19 songs (of a truly massive 37) really show the depth of back catalogue that this living legend has to draw on. Pummelled with classic after classic ? ?Something? (played as a big-lump-in-the-throat George Harrison tribute), ?Back in the U.S.S.R.?, ?I?ve Got a Feeling?, ?Paperback Writer, ?Let It Be?, ?Hey Jude? ? you?re left wondering what he could possibly have left for an encore. A musically, and literally, explosive version of one of Bond's best themes ?Live And Let Die?, which is surrounded by spectacular pyrotechnics, is the kind of finale lesser acts would actually die for. Yet as McCartney returns for the encore, correctly assessing that ?I get the feeling you guys want to keep rocking?, he?s well capable of giving tens of thousands of Scots exactly what they desire. Over two encores he?s still got a thrashing ?Helter Skelter?, a heartstrings-tugging ?Yesterday? and a howling ?Get Back? up his sleeve. Apologising for leaving ? ?We?ve got to go home some time. You?ve got to go home some time? ? he finishes up with an apposite medley of ?Sgt. Pepper? (?We?d like to thank you once again?) and ?The End?. As the (naturally blue and white) ticker tape drowns the front row, we?re left in no doubt that we?re being sent back to our beds. Although you get the feeling McCartney was right and Glasgow could?ve gone all night, not a single member of the audience, which ranges from six to 64 and well beyond, could possibly feel short changed. Excellent review!

Paul McCarntey is in my mind the greatest musician ever. That was one of the best nights of my life...the show was awesome! Hopefully he comes back to Scotland soon. His voice seemed near perfect and the setlist was superb. I won't see a better concert than that in my life unless Paul outdoes himself at another. Cheers Sir Paul

From what I've heard so far, the time off prior to this show gave his chops ample time to get back to peak form! Go, Paulie!

wow what a night last night at hampden, from start to finish it was absolutely amazing, fantastic to hear ive just seen a face and also and i love her, highlight for me was that fantastic version of something, it brought tears to my eyes, pauls voice was flawless, the band was brilliant, myself and my wife were in bb7 and the sound of the crowd singing behind us was great. all the travelling on the train, the back just about at breaking point, my hips dropping off, my feet killing me, my throat on fire from singing every song at the top of my voice, the 2 and a half mile walk back to the hotel, none of that could ever stop us having the night of our lives, my 40 year wait to see my living idol was a night i will never ever forget, i sit here now with tears in my eyes thinking about it i hope all you wonderful people who shared that with us last night will feel the same for the rest of your lives. we love you paul and thank you for making my life complete.

great night. i thought the security were a disgrace the way they treated some people.i think they still had the football mentality. i met 'wix' before the show.it was great to swap oneliners with him heres a link to some photos from my facebook page .i hope it works http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=9270&id=100000758947079&l=9036f07072

hey just wanted to say thanks to everyone for the photos and videos there amazing. Still can't get over how good it was. Can't pick a favourite moment cause there was so many. I was pleased to see how full hampden was despite all the press saying sales were gowing slow. I saw him live at the o2 in london but hampden was so much better. I thought the atmosphere was really good and loved how it was a really nice day. Would also like to say how impressed i was with Sharleen Spiteri as i thought she would be terrible. thats just hope he comes back sooner next time

Let me tell you, it looks like turning 68 has done great things for Paul! Last night was incredible, and honestly, I've seldom heard his voice sounding so good. He was amazing, start to finish. Paul and the band completely rocked Hampden. They were on fire, technical glitches or not. Maybe all you regular Macca concert-goers are used to it by now, but I still can't even believe how good it was. I guess Paul was making up for lost time, right? I was really happy with my seats, dead centre, section BB7, row BB, but during the show a friend came over and invited us to swap tickets for a while so we could go up to the front section and take pictures. My camera had actually died by that point, but I went up anyway. People in the front section were just dancing in the aisles, so I ended up just going right up to the front and partying, just as Paul started his solo for I've Got A Feeling. The atmosphere was amazing. I got a smile from the security guards. The set list went down an absolute storm. Letting Go and Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five were great, as well as all the usuals. The Live and Let Die fireworks were awesome. I'm surprised my voice is still intact today. Just everything. Wow. Thanks to Sir Paul and everyone. I'm still on a high. What an absolutely fantastic night.
