Doctor Who

Looks like Matt Smith is off at the end of next year. He will apparently vacate the Dr Who role for a chance of film stardom, mainly in Hollywood. Dr Who chiefs had hoped he would stay on beyond the end of his three year contract. Good. Perhaps now they can find someone who can act and is capable of more than one facial expression. And while their on with it they can shift Amy Pond's limited talent into the dole queue too. If they do these things and ditch the Tele-Tubby daleks and get back to scripts with some depth and meat (or tofu if your that way inclined like meself) to them then I may just like Dr Who again. This series has been purgatory.
Report appeared in "The Sun" newspaper yesterday - they haven't got a good track record for getting Doctor Who stories accurate, so I doubt this one is true either. I've loved Matt this season - very Patrick Troughton - and think the scripts have allowed Karen to show more range as the season's gone on. Her character was a bit one-dimensional (i.e. "feisty") to start with, but she's been allowed to show more of a vulnerable side as the season's gone on. Re the scripts, David, just out of interest, are you comparing this season with the Russell T Davies era or the "classic" Doctor Who series with Tom Baker, etc? I actually think Steven Moffatt's moved it away a little from the RTD approach (big emotional dramas) back to some of the lower-key English sci-fi of 1970s Doctor Who - e.g. The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood story in an abandoned mine, the Weeping Angel "base under seige" type story and the "Eleventh Hour" and "Amy's Choice" set in a sleepy English village. Without giving anything away for Anita, who hasn't seen Episodes 12 or 13 yet, I've loved the way Steven Moffatt's woven an intricate story across the whole season, so been happy with the extra layers built in. And there were some good ethical issues raised in "The Beast Below" and "Cold Blood". And "Vincent and the Doctor" managed to incorporate mental illness into the programme in an affecting and sensitive way. So there was plenty for me to think about as well as enjoy this season.

Well I'm back... funny that the TV in my hotel in England couldn't get Dr. Who... that was a bit of a chuckle... I saw the Lodger last night... so funny with the Doctor trying to be a "normal" guy. Wasn't there an earlier show with a spacecraft in the second story of the house... what am I thinking of?! Is it the first show with the extra "room" at Amy Pond's house? Surprisingly, I saw this near the Earl's Court Tube station, was waiting for the Doctor and Amy to pop out... I had thought that these police boxes were from the 60's. I didn't realize they still were used.... It's the only one that I've seen, in my London travels, but maybe I missed ones, before I caught on to Dr. Who. http://i433.photobucket.com/albums/qq52/Happy_Traveller/I%20Love%20England/P1020494.jpg Could someone please tell me the next show after the Lodger? Thanks... I think I might have fallen asleep and missed it...

The next show is indeed the two part series finale - starting with part 1 The Pandorica Opens. That was only broadcast for the first time in the USA last night so part two is next weekend. It'll be great to have that screened next Saturday so the UK members that have patiently held back from spoiling will be able to post freely at last. The Lodger was a little light-hearted fun ahead of the drama's of the finale two parter. Martin

I love how the character that is Amy has developed. I really wanted to see vulnerability from her, and a softer side of her. Thankfully we received that from her as the season went on. It was delightful to view the progression of that development. I enjoyed this immensely!

Without giving anything away for Anita, who hasn't seen Episodes 12 or 13 yet,
Thank you so much for your kind consideration throughout this season, Jeremy. You've been so careful in your writing, as not to openly post spoilers...very thoughtful, and very much appreciated!

Thanks so much Martin.... I always appreciate your help and the great links that you and Birthday post... they are so helpful to someone who is new to the Doctor... TLP did you see part one of Pandorica Opens.... I've missed how Rory dies... must have been while I was away.... I have soooooooooo many questions.... This is killing me.... what is going on!!! I'm ready to hear more when everyone is caught up... Also, I've noticed that the crack hasn't appeared in all of the later shows... the last crack I remember was with the Angels.... TLP thanks for posting the marathon... however, I've just noticed it... darn....

Hi love2travel, Rory died at the end of "Cold Blood" (second part of the Silurian story - first part was "The Hungry Earth" when Amy got sucked/dragged into the earth at the mine). Rory was shot by one of the Silurians in front of one of the large cracks and disappeared into it as he died - and disappeared from existence. Amy desperately tried to hold onto her memories of him, but without success and ended the episode oblivious to the fact that he had even existed. VERY sad. Only The Doctor could remember him. Just before this happened, the Doctor reached inside the crack and pulled some debris from it - a piece of scorched wood, bearing some letters: "POLICE TE" and "FR" in black on a white background. The Doctor recognised it immediately, and at the end of the episode held it against the TARDIS notice - "POLICE TELEPHONE FREE FOR USE OF PUBLIC" and is seen to be dreading the possible implications. This is a really bad quality video, but it shows the relevant part of the episode -

Karen Gillan has rubbished claims by UK "newspaper" The Sun that Matt Smith is looking to leave the show to pursue a career in Hollywood. "Matt will be sticking around," she said. "I think those rumours were made up." http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/cult/s7/doctor-who/news/a246624/gillan-matt-smith-isnt-leaving-who.html

Anita and love2travel, Glad you liked the links, etc. I'm very happy to hold off on spoilers, etc. I hate it when people tell me plot details ahead of time too, so glad you've been able to enjoy the show unspoilt! Let Martin and I know when you've seen The Pandorica Opens, so we can discuss it!

Hi, love2travel! I have seen The Pandorica Opens. I watched it for the second time this evening. I LOVED it!!! I feel it is a fantastic episode, bringing the entire season and its characters together for us. What an ending!!! Cannot wait to see The Big Bang! The crack has appeared since Flesh and Stone. You've told us that you had fallen asleep during The Lodger. You may want to go back and watch the end of that one. This season is definitely worth catching up on. If it helps, this Saturday there is a Doctor who marathon of the entire season leading up to the final episode... BBC America Saturday, 24th of July 9AM - 10PM

Hi TLP I actually saw the Lodger twice, the second time late Saturday night and then apparently I fell asleep on the Pandorica Opens... I missed the Hungry Earth, Vincent and the Doctor and Cold Blood...while I was on holiday.. so I just downloaded them in iTunes... I'm trying to catch up... I just watched the one with van Gogh... which I absolutely loved to pieces... oh, if he could have only known how much his paintings are beloved by millions!!! I'm going to try and watch the Hungry Earth tonite... So I guess with the long break we had... that's why I'm thinking I have missed seeing the crack, because I haven't seen the shows ops: So thank you so so much for the info on the marathon this Saturday... am going to get my sister to watch it... she will love it!!! I am anxiously looking forward to the Christmas extravaganza... as well as part two "The Big Bang" Am biting my nails waiting for that one!!! I can only imagine how the Triplets are feeling about this ending.... how it was left at the end.... I know that would have really upset me, at their age... What has been their reaction?! Thanks so much for keeping us updated on this side of the pond... Cheers!

Birthday... Thanks so much for your great info again... did watch the link quickly... oh... so sad... Rory keeps dying... I don't like that... I am dying to hear yours and Martin's remarks on the Pandorica Opens... What an exciting conclusion... The writer is just brilliant.... it is being pulled together bit by bit and leaving me guessing.... Rory and Amy.... Who's in the Pandorica??? Watching it s-l-o-0-0-w-l-y open.... holding my breath I can't stand the suspense!!! I know that Amy is the key somehow... the books in her room had something to do with it... Did the Tardis go to Amy's accidentally? I am now thinking about the references made to this show, back when the Angels were falling into the crack... and I know River had made some remarks to one of the miltary men... I'm not sure if she is for or against the Doctor.... and the part about her taking the painting from the Queen.... did the painting come into existence during some change in a time warp... because I'm thinking that the Queen must have had it hanging there all the time. So why wasn't it noticed before about the Tardis... and how did River know where to go? Ohhh I have so many questions???

Sorry this is a little off topic from your discussion (I've yet to catch up on the latest season, I know shame, shame) but I love Doctor Who! I first started watching with David Tennant as the tenth regeneration (okay that's a lie... that's when I first remember watching... I actually watched with my cousins when I was like 2 haha). I even have a fansite on him [David] called Tennantively as well as a podcast (Tennantcast) with my friend Kelsey, who is also an avid Beatles fan! She just saw Ringo in NC and will see Paul soon! Anyway, I love Karen Gillan and Matt Smith has come to be an excellent Doctor. I think it's silly those rumors he would leave after one season!

You're welcome, love2travel! Good to hear that you are just about caught up and enjoying the season. Glad that you enjoyed Vincent and The Doctor. This one has become one of my all-time favorites! The Starry Night scene is absolutely BEAUTIFUL, and the scene with Vincent at Musee d'Orsay is sooooo emotionally overwhelming!!! Thanks so much for asking about the triplet's reaction...Being seasoned Whovians, the triplets are accustomed to being left with cliffhangers, so they tend to find the nail-biting endings more exciting rather than upsetting. Loving music, the triplets are very in tune to the part that music plays in Doctor Who. They were so moved by the music at the end, and commented on how it really brought forth the emotions. Along with the rest of us, they are sitting on edge, waiting to see what The Big Bang will bring after being left with that incredible cliffhanger!!! Hope your sister enjoys the marathon, and that you both enjoy The Big Bang! It's really difficult to believe that the season is coming to an end. Only five months until Christmas!

Hi Kari! Welcome to the forum, and to the Doctor Who thread! I believe David Tennant will always be our favorite Doctor. He is very talented, and charismatic. He brought a very special quality to the role...absolutely charming!

Hope you have a fantastic evening Martin. Will definitely be there with you in spirit. Many thanks for taking the time to post those links. In Doctor Who news (don't worry, I've not included any with spoilers), Stephen Moffatt has said there is no vacancy for the role of the Doctor - http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/cult/s7/doctor-who/news/a249091/moffat-cumberbatch-wont-be-doctor.html Moffatt says he expects Matt to stay in the role for many years to come.
