Doctor Who

Well I reckon the USA has caught up and we're free from spoiler alerts, but I would like a US member to confirm the Big Bang has screened. Fantastic concert, Karen, Matt and Arthur the actor that plays Rory were on fine form. Can't wait to get it on video when it broadcasts on BBC Three TV in due course. I was dragged from pillar to post as a child to see classical music concerts by my parents, and recall long hours sat on uncomfortable hall benches, but I had truly forgotten the majesty and power of a full orchestra - and choral choir - in unrestricted form. My son couldn't believe that the sound was unamplified - but the only microphones were for the radio and TV recording and the announcers microphones. I reckon my tickets were amongst the first sold on release as we were literally front row circle - hanging over the balacony - facing the stage - as far as "best available" in my price range goes there could be none better. Aimed at a younger audience the classical music choices were a truly great selection of rousing classics; Mars from the Planet Suite Oh Fortuna Ride of the Valkerie standing out immediately but the TV series music was as fantastic as ever accompanied with video compliations from the TV series. Testament to the quantity and quality of the music that this show was able to feature only sequences from this current series - with a couple of exceptions to close. As Karen pointed out, this was the "house band" the same musicians that record the TV series music conducted by Ben Foster who arranges the Murry Gold compositions for orchestra so it was very much a delight to share this music with them playing. And my first time at the Royal Albert Hall as well. Loads of monsters, with a very close encounter for us with two of the Vampires of Venice - the teeth are very convincing. Hundreds of out-and-out Whovians present, several look-alikes for the David Tennant Doctor, Captain Jack and loads of bow ties More later.. Martin

Hi Martin.... Thanks so much for the detailed report from Royal Albert.... it sounds wonderful.... I can't wait until it gets to uTube!!! The Big Band has now finally been shown in the US and is also available for download on iTunes... What an absolutely brilliant finale of the season!!! This show is sooooo amazing....My head was spinning a bit with all of the time travel... and twists and turns in the plot. How exciting.... I will be re-watching it again. I'm not sure if I'm totally sure about it... but it seems that the crack sort of followed Amy... not sure why the books that she had, with the Roman centurians and Pandora's box were incorporated into the senario...I know her mind was probed about that... it just is a bit mixed up still. I wish we had all of the info available to us in the US, as you have in the UK. Birthday... thanks for the links... I will have to download the game... it sounds fun!!! I can't wait for the Christmas show now!!! I don't know anyone in my area who watches the show, although they should!!! I can't wait to hear your comments....
-
Martin, thanks so much for posting the Doctor Who Prom links, very kind! We were indeed with you in spirit...LOVED hearing this!!! We've been able to view a few clips of the event on YouTube...BEAUTIFUL!!! Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts of the performance with everyone...excellent! I can only imagine how it must have been to hear this beautiful music performed live, and see the the characters and monsters come to life before your eyes...absolutely brilliant!!! How cool that Whovians dressed as their favorite characters, awesome! Cannot wait until this one is made available on DVD! Sooooo happy that you were finally able to see Royal Albert Hall. I have no doubt that you, your wife, and your sons had the time of your lives...what a lovely family memory to treasure always!

Jeremy, thanks so much for taking the time to post all of those article links...as always, much appreciated!

One extra thing with the Prom: One sequence played was supported by a video showing in turn each of the eleven Doctors and their transformations. This instantly became a vox pop popularity poll with the level of applause varying from actor to actor. David and Matt were the loudest, Peter Davison probably the quietest. Was the audience reaction noticible on the audio? Back to the final episode, my feelings about Amy solidified as the wedding sequence unfolded, all suggesting a "parting of the ways", when the Doctor said "Time to say Good-bye " I punched the air in delight as Amy waved out the door to family and remained inside the Tardis with Rory. Just one of the many twists in this roller-coaster ride of an episode. Loved it. Martin

Martin, the audience's reaction was definitely noticeable on the audio. Karen told us that This is Gallifrey/Vale decem would be a celebration of the Doctor's ten regenerations, with Vale decem focusing on the final moments of the tenth Doctor and his regeneration. Obviously she didn't tell us that there would be video and/or photos, but as we heard the audience's applause, we assumed that they must be seeing film footage, and/or photos. The commentator from the BBC box at RAH confirmed our thoughts once the piece ended. He explained that a montage of Doctor Who's past had been shown during the piece. By the reactions that we heard, it must have been an amazing moment! More later with comments regarding The Big Bang...FANTASTIC!!! Loved every minute of this episode!!!

Just found this one...sooooo BEAUTIFUL!!! LOVE it!!! Many thanks to this uploader...sooooo thrilled to see this!!! This is Gallifrey/Vale decem

Doctor Who Prom week on the BBC! One hour of highlights at 20.30 tonight (Monday 6th Sept.) on BBC3 TV plus 25 mins of back-stage footage on the BBC interactive red button service plus "more" surprises on-line. Should appear on the BBC iPlayer for the usual 7 days as well. Hopefully we'll get the whole show in due course via the red button. We did two years ago. Details: http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/dw/news/bulletin_100903_01 I will be particularly interested to see if they use "my show" or favour footage from the repeat performance on the Sunday lunch-time. To be honest Matt and Karen flubbed their lines several times on the Saturday Night - all reducing them to fits of giggles - all warmly received but the BBC may have a better "take" from the Sunday performance. Of course it may be an editted mix from both nights. Martin

Martin, I read that they experienced some technical difficulties during the Sunday performance, particularly during the performance of This is Gallifrey/Vale Decem. I believe I read that the Sunday audience didn't receive all the video that the Saturday audience received, and that the performance overall was considered much better on Saturday. Do you know anything about this?

Doomsday, during the afternoon marathon last week...cannot get through that one without crying. Rose was a great companion...LOVE her! Torchwood...more mature themed...quite enjoyable!

I was at work when it aired so am waiting an appropriate moment to enjoy the iPlayer coverage, but the behind the scenes bit on red button has clips from my show so I'm hopeful.

I had not read that, I wonder if they were uncertain about the cheers during that sequence and tried it without images? I'll let you know what was used after I've watched the programme. Martin

And tucked away in the small print on the BBC Doctor Who pages this news:
How can I enjoy the Proms? A one-hour version of the Doctor Who Proms are on BBC Three on Monday, 6 September at 20.30. There's an extended version on BBC Three on Friday at 19.00.
So it looks like we're getting the full show on Friday 10th at 19.00 hrs. Update: Just checked BBC schedules the Friday tranmission runs 19.00 - 20.30 so editting out the toilet and icecream break and tidying up the performance that seems exactly right for the full performance. Good old Beeb Martin
