Well, we're going to have to agree to disagree on this one. And the wedding was planned 2 weeks in advance. You have to get the marriage license and "post the banns" then 2 weeks later you could be married.

And do you really think he wrote Martha My Dear as a veiled song to Maggie? The song was recorded Oct. 4 & 5, 1968 while Linda was in London with Paul (she arrived Sept. 26, 1968) I have never heard that assertion, but I suppose it could be true. I always thought Honey Pie was about Jane. But what about I Will? I know it was first written in India, but it was recorded Sept. 16 & 17, 1968, right before Linda was due to arrive. I thought he may have been thinking of her then.
I'm not sure that the Beatles ever did anything by the book. When Paul flew to France for the Fool On The Hill shoot he did so without a passport but being a Beatle, that trifling detail was overlooked. How much notice he was suppose to give re: the wedding and the notice he actually gave are two totally different things. It does seem odd to me that if they had been planning the wedding for two weeks, why he only gave his brother (the best man) less than 24 hours notice?
I'm convinced that Martha My Dear was about Maggie when he initially wrote it. Changing the name at the last moment for the recording was undertsandable to keep Linda in the dark. Although, if she actually listened to the lyrics, she would have realised that it wasn't a song about a hairy mutt? I never thought of Honey Pie being about Jane but now that you mention it, the lyric do tend to fit in places. Not that Jane was a girl from 'north of England' or had much to do with Hollywood. I Will could have been another song for Maggie given the time it was written but,as you say, he might have been thinking about Linda at the time of recording, even though the words don't really fit.

I got dinged again and don't think I quoted a photo.
That photo of the girls in costumes are so adorable.
When you quote a post, before you write your message, double click on that photo & a box will come up showing the url. You need to highlight it & copy (ctrl & c) & then close that box. You are back to the pic. Delete it. Then paste in the url that you found. Then finally you can type your message. Alot of messin around for something that they could automate so we could at least know what someone is talking about. HTH
Thanks so much Oobu, will do that!
Some really sweet photos that Stella posted for Mary's birthday!
The photo of Stella, Paul and Mary looked to be the size of a Polaroid. Really hope I can get to Linda's Polaroid exhibit some time!
Yeah, pretty sure that one is in the book.
I assume that you mean the book Linda's Polaroid Diaries?
Yes, was originally going to Berlin to see Linda's exhibit and planned on getting the book there. Because we're not doing enough medically to bring our numbers down here, hopefully the exhibit will be extended or go somewhere else in Europe that is safer than here. I'll get the book online.
When I got it for Christmas it was something close to $50. It has come down to half that now! PM me for where.

I know about the Fool On The Hill/France/no passport story. Regardless, the wedding was hastily planned and where did you read that Mike only got 24 hours notice? Even if he did, I would put that down to Paul being scatter-brained like he was about the ring perhaps.
Nobody ever said Martha My Dear was about the actual dog! Paul just used the name because it fit the tune. (the cadence of the lyric) I would have to hear it from Paul that it was specifically written with Maggie in mind to believe it. Remember, everybody assumed And I Love Her was written for Jane, but in an interview much later, Paul said it was just a love song, not written with any particular girl in mind. (If I was Jane I would have brained him a long time ago!)
Speaking of Maggie (given name has to be Margaret):

I've got more, I just figured I'd better start a new post.
Honey Pie made me think of Jane and how she went to the states for 5 months Nov. 1966 to April 1967 with her acting troupe. And how she was always going off and leaving Paul to act in plays ("Won't you please come home" "Will the wind that blew her boat across the sea kindly send her sailing back to me?")
And then I Will:
Who knows how long I've loved you
You know I love you still
Will I wait a lonely lifetime
If you want me to, I willFor if I ever saw you
I didn't catch your name
But it never really mattered
I will always feel the sameLove you forever and forever
Love you with all my heart
Love you whenever we're together
Love you when we're apartAnd when at last I find you
Your song will fill the air
Sing it loud so I can hear you
Make it easy to be near you
For the things you do endear you to me
You know I will
I willThis sounds like him and Linda because they had met so long before (May 15, 1967) but didn't see each other again until a year later. The whole situation with her makes this song fit with her, to me. Again, I would have to hear it from Paul's mouth to believe he wrote it about Maggie.
So Kestrel, My Dear, we are back to agreeing to disagree. ️️

From Mike McCartney's book Thank U Very Much:
On the evening of March the 10th Paul was on the line from London to my hotel room. 'I'm getting married to Lin tomorrow morning, d'you want to be my best man, and don't tell ANYONE'.
My mistake, Mike only had about 16 hours notice !!
I'm sure John 'Nobody Told Me' Lennon once mentioned that Martha My Dear was about the dog but then he may have just assumed that.
Anyway, I think we do need to get back onto the proper purpose of this thread.

Sweetie, they got married on March 12th, so he still had about 36 hours notice if he called the evening of the 10th! Like I said, scatter-brained Paul waited to ask him to be best man, or maybe was afraid he'd spill the beans and word would get out.
And what does John know? Martha My Dear was not "about the dog!" He just used her name. I'm afraid neither one of us will know for sure if Martha was a pseudonym for Maggie.

On balance I think its far more likely that Mike got the date wrong than the fact that it wasn't the evening before the wedding he got the telephone call.

That's what I was going to PM her, because I didn't think we were allowed to say a company name and how much. Maybe it's only if you post a link to it you get busted!

I love all the photos taken during the 'Wildlife' album cover. The location btw was at one of the ponds at Osterley Park (west London), where Wings would return two years later to shoot the cover for 'Band on the Run' at Osterley House.
