What I'm doing 3.0 - Second Special Comeback

about singing... I was right, yesterday evening I was singing and I decided to stop about 20 minutes or so... I'm not ready for long periods. And I continue not liking vibrato, I don't mind it for low notes, sort of what Elvis did, but not for high notes, I just don't like it...
I'm not a big fan of vibrato at all. Elvis was a master of it ("Surrender" 1960), but not always (studio version of "Hurt" 1976).

I liked vibrato AT FIRST, when I started singing... that was... not 21st Century, for sure... Then I disliked it and now I'm sort of trying to get it back into my singing but I haven't found a way I like it. I don't know if I never will like it no matter how I do it or if I never will make in a way I like it. It's not the same. I like a note going up and down but in a wider way than vibrato. For instance, If I do the Elvis kind of vibrato in low notes, I like it, but not for high notes. Here I am doing it with Surrender, and I thinking... "nonono..." BTW, never ever sing live after laughing out loud. I remember one day singing Surrender at some karaoke after laughing out loud with friends for some minutes and it was a struggle for all the song, I didn't know what was wrong that made my voice not do what I wanted to do, I went on and on anyway. And my voice cracked up at the end. lol. "Be Mine TOO . oo-o-o. niGHt" perhaps Paul was LOL before Hey Jude at the Olympics

Those last two notes on Elvis' "Surrender" are among his most impressive.

Well, that notes are just operatic ("air up" and all that). Surrender is a version of "Torna A Surriento" just like "It's now or never" is a version of "O Sole Mio" Pavarotti, from 0 to 1:27 there's no sign of "Elvis singing" but then "Torna a Surriento" is just like "Be Mine Forever" when Elvis switches to operatic at the end. And after Pavarotti sings that you'd wish to be listening to Elvis instead.
Projection, directing the air to your head -

Can't stand them Nah 21st, I'm just talking about picking a topic and writing separate songs.. you know, just something we can all get behind to give us a starting point to create something new. I'm thinking just on our own, rather than a true collaboration. and I'll be venturing into the world of trying to write a piano based song very soon, I want to do it cause I never have, have always written on guitar. but I see you talking away over there and figured the time might be right for you to get behind the keys and knock something out as well. Me and the fellas around here had some fun doing a couple songs called Pink Clothes and So Where Do We Start that way. Its just a bit of comradery that helps with creativity I think. Let me know. We could pick something like describing the sights and sounds of our home towns, sort of like John and Paul did with Stawberry Fields and Penny Lane. That could be cool. I'll let you pick the topic, don't matter to me one bit. but I'm writing something on piano. gotta try my hand at it I admire Paul's ability to write on Piano obviously, and also guys like Billy Joel and Elton are phenominal. But I also really love guys like Harry Nilsson, Van Dyke Parks, and the amazing Randy Newman. That old school americana style is so sweet. I doubt I'll get anywhere close to that, but I'll get somewhere and look forward to finding out where. I wanna hear you write and sing and record something new, is the bottom line of what I'm sayin here my friend

I'll let you know you if I'm interested. I want to take it slow, last time I went to the keyboard to compose something I ended with sort of 5 different songs, kind of like a vomit. It's my old problem, if I get into music I get self-absorbed... I think you all have realized of that....
-
Audi, about vibrato, this guy sums the way I see it, a rare find . Actually not vibrato but the lack of it. Like he sounds from 1.38 to 1.45.
For instance, for high notes Queen+Adam Lambert Somebody To Love 3.39 to 4.52: not a single vibrato there , but the rest is full of vibrato. -

yeah audi's right, you need to just write something. vomiting music is great, why not?? well not literally vomiting so Ollie, you are so into singers, have you listened to any Nilsson? One of the best male pop vocalists who ever lived. just fyi on that I don't know vibrato from vibrators (:lol but Harry could sing the shit out of anything. Lennon and McCartney heard this and were floored back in 1968
I mean listen to the gentle tenderness of the first tune in that clip, and then right after it the all out high octane version of Tina and Ike's River Deep/Mountain High (around 2:45). you think you can do that? don't worry, no one can. Maybe McCartney came closest actually out of anyone. but at their peaks, I cannot honestly say McCartney was a better singer. I think at the peak of their singing powers, Harry had him. by the slimist of margins. But think about it, Paul aint hitting those notes in that Bad Finger song, Without You. no chance. Paul could do a lot, but there's stuff that just cant be done that Nilsson could do. in his prime. I mean just let me know if you want more examples of breathe taking singing by Harry Nilsson, examples all day. not sure I've ever seen you visit my hommage thread to the great man. sift through it. its angelic singing for dummies (like me). http://maccaboard.paulmccartney.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=72837&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=75 -

I'm into singers but the only singer I can listen no matter what he is singing (as his totally informal home tapes or his demos) is Freddie Mercury. As for the rest, it depends too on what they're singing. I'm sure I can do that, because I have already done it. with Twist And Shout and Whole Lotta Love, this one while on the floor. pretty much shocking everyone. I think Paul was/is better singer than Nilsson. Nilsson was more technical for the high (like Roy Orbison for instance) but still Paul was better overall. If for the technique on the high Freddie wouldn't be so great. I don't think anyone here is willing to go deep in Freddie's Garden Tapes but what about this demo? It's an unfinished song, sometimes I've sort of though of finishing it in a kind of Queen way, the let's make a lot of noise way, kind of like We Are The Champions, not that intimate, but who will listen to it?. So I've done it in my mind.
I did this when Spain won the Football World Cup, I promised. I did what I could with the "drums" all on my own, and on G not on F as the original, just one vocal take! There are other versions, but they're light years away, like Robbie Williams one... -
Something has got in the way of me singing. Singers' natural main enemy. A cold. I replied to ads to people that where searching for singers here. Now I must wait to reply their replies... I want to join a band but not any band, that's the big difference from my past. I should reject some offers, if not I'm just getting into the first that want me and that is not going to work out. Well, it can! But I must think thrice before joining a band. Or maybe I'm moving from overthinking to overexacting or so. Then writing stuff is also is my list but not a priority... I've written all kinds of things, tons of things.

I think Nilsson in his hey day would have tore that song to shreds compared to that version you posted from Freddie. and I have great respect for Freddie Mercury, great great singer, especially live. but Harry's version of that particular song would have been way better IMO. to me singing comes down to range (both in terms of octaves and in terms of power), control, and emotiveness. I think Harry Nilsson was, and again I say in his prime, a better and more versitile and skilled singer than either Frieddie or Paul. There's no doubt in my mind, from everything I've heard. you should listen to all his work up to Pussy Cats. Its fantastic. If you're not well versed you need to spend some time on it. I find it a real shame people on this board don't show more interest or know more of Harry's catalogue. you're straight up robbing yourselves. He blossomed into one of the greatest pop singers ever in my mind, and then burned it all out. but at his peak no one touched him. for christsakes the Beatles themselves held him in the highest regard, as an equal. and they were correct IMO. I think he should be revered much more than he is. There's probably tons of artists out there like that, but I'm a Nilsson guy. He was freaking amazing, the control and range was out of this world. he's like a damn trapeze artist at times, the way you/I am just waiting for him to fall, or crack, or miss a high note, or waiver even the slightest bit. and he never does. its all perfect to my ears. and even his latter work, when he was a raspy old has been. its all still genius, cause he could still work it with what he had. I do think Paul is a better songwriter than Harry, in a pop sense. but again, I dig the eccentric. But Paul IS the better overall writer of songs. John on the other hand just 'brought it'. all attitude and power and pain and sensativity all rolled into one. Lennon would just kick your ass on anything. Cutting through and leaving nothing on the table. I'm using a lot of americanisms right now, but Lennon wasn't a great technical singer, but he 'brought it'. I dig that. and as a writer John could do it all. but he was a lot like Harry. So good they lost interest. it came too easy, and they got tired of the craftmanship of being songwriters. If you don't have something to say, then why are you doing it? that kind of thing. That never happened to Paul cause he loved making music so much, and that in itself is cool. thats why he's got the greatest catalogue. He'll never stop. some people say John dried up, whereas I say he had nothing left to say or prove. There was nothing driving him anymore, as a person. and he wasn't going to work for anyone. its a rebel thing. Paul's more the music maker. as I babble on and on...

Well, I've never have got in listening to Nilsson cause the songs don't captivate me much. Okey, then I can go to covers... I'm just listening to Somewhere Over The Rainbow
I just find it boring. It reminds me a lot of Rufus Wainwright. I can't find much feeling, expressivity, vocal intensity, whatever you call it, what Freddie had in spades (or Lennon, Elvis, Paul...), he made you feel any note. Of course Nilsson do things Paul can do not and Freddie do not, I agree again. Save the Last Dance For Me - Nilsson, again boring for me, too much vibrato with no expression Then the same song done for a guy that's all no technique and all feeling Springsteen-Save The Last Dance For Me, just the way he sings "So darling..." I mean I don't feel like I'm missing anything, you can like it and most may not like it. Look at me about Queen, it seems hardly anyone likes Queen here. Who can not feel a thing hearing this? Freddie Mercury - In My Defence -
I just posted twice the post above and I can't delete it, only edit it. So I had to write something instead.... the cold has gone...

Its funny Ollie, cause those are the exact reasons I think he has such an amazing voice! SO much feeling, expressive emotion, intensity.. wierd how we feel so different on this. oh well, I do respect your knowledge and opinions on music and vocalists. for some reason though I've completely boughten into Nilsson. can you tell?

SO much feeling, expressive emotion, intensity.. wierd how we feel so different on this. oh well, I do respect your knowledge and opinions on music and vocalists. for some reason though I've completely boughten into Nilsson. can you tell?
well, I have listened to very few Nilsson stuff... It's quite obvious that his Without You cover is memorable. And probably the thing I like the most is that song you posted is that he sing "such a natural high" doing such a natural thing, it's a little magical thing.

Ok, this is gonna be weird but I guess it's okey for me because I am weird. I can't find anything that brings me inspiration to write songs again, to really do new stuff. I have went back and compiled aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaallll my stuff. That is something like 300 songs (lots of papers, you know...) and 100 recordings. And now I've decided to listen to all the recordings and to go through all the songs. That can drive me mad or to be a great inspiration, I'll run the risk. Heck, I'm going back to 1986...

you have a larger back log than I have Ollie, us failed musicians although I don't really see myself as failed, its a path you follow and you do it cause you love it but anyway... going back and listening to the old tracks is a lot of fun. I did that maybe about a year ago when I started digitizing all my old cassette tape recordings of the old stuff I did and putting things on YouTube.. was actually a lot of fun, and bit personal sometimes and embarrassing, theres definitely a lot I haven't put on YouTube or Reverb.. I say a lot, but maybe 20 songs.. not good, or good music and dumb lyrics or vice versa.. but I rather enjoyed the process, perhaps you will too. Its cool to see the progression and remember where your head was at once in a while. and you realize how much you change over the years. a lot of my old stuff is embarrasing to me now. You should digitize your best tunes, if for no other reason to keep record of them, so they don't flitter off and cease to exist. Thats why I did it. so when I die peeps know me from my music. my thoughts. I had lost tapes and what I had left I wanted to make permanent. thats cool. but I'd like to hear your stuff. as far as inspiration, let the music inspire. just a note and a rhythm and begin there. I bet someone like you can build a groove rather quickly, and then see what words make sense more with the music/melody, than actually having to have any actual meaning. thats the easy way to write for me. I think its either all about the music and rhythms, or the lyrics and vocal performance. and the first one is easier to accomplish, but if you can achieve either you've got a song. If you have both you can be the Beatles

The process of going back your old stuff, your very old stuff is very moving. "Your life flashes through your eyes...". Right now I'm in 2003. I'm compiling all my recordings too. This one is peculiar, we never finished it. This was meant to be a demo so someone will figure out what kind of drums I wanted for the second part. In the end I think it has got something as it is. I remember Bjorn said he also though of doing a similar version of There's A Place. There's A Place, first part slow, second part fast with "vocal drums": www.oliversanz.com/theresaplacevocaldrums.mp3
