Here is a place for poems we know about dogs or cats or any other animals which we love. I have always loved this poem by Lord Byron to his beloved dog: Inscription on the Monument of a Newfoundland Dog [1] When some proud son of man returns to earth, Unknown to glory, but upheld by birth, The sculptor's art exhausts the pomp of woe And storied urns record who rest below: When all is done, upon the tomb is seen, Not what he was, but what he should have been: But the poor dog, in life the firmest friend, The first to welcome, foremost to defend, Whose honest heart is still his master's own, Who labours, fights, lives, breathes for him alone, Unhonour'd falls, unnoticed all his worth-- Denied in heaven the soul he held on earth: While Man, vain insect! hopes to be forgiven, And claims himself a sole exclusive Heaven. Oh Man! thou feeble tenant of an hour, Debased by slavery, or corrupt by power, Who knows thee well must quit thee with disgust, Degraded mass of animated dust! Thy love is lust, thy friendship all a cheat, Thy smiles hypocrisy, thy words deceit! By nature vile, ennobled but by name, Each kindred brute might bid thee blush for shame. Ye! who perchance behold this simple urn, Pass on--it honours none you wish to mourn: To mark a Friend's remains these stones arise; I never knew but one,--and here he lies. Newstead Abbey, October 30, 1808. *This monument is placed in the garden of Newstead. A prose inscription precedes the verses:-- "Near this spot Are deposited the Remains of one Who possessed Beauty without Vanity, Strength without Insolence, Courage without Ferocity, And all the Virtues of Man without his Vices. This Praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery If inscribed over human ashes, Is but a just tribute to the Memory of BOATSWAIN, a Dog, Who was born at Newfoundland, May, 1803, And died at Newstead Abbey, Nov. 18, 1808." **Byron thus announced the death of his favourite to his friend Hodgson:--"Boatswain is dead!--he expired in a state of madness on the 18th after suffering much, yet retaining all the gentleness of his nature to the last; never attempting to do the least injury to any one near him. I have now lost everything except old Murray." In the will which the poet executed in 1811, he desired to be buried in the vault with his dog, and Joe Murray was to have the honour of making one of the party. When the poet was on his travels, a gentleman, to whom Murray showed the tomb, said, "Well, old boy, you will take your place here some twenty years hence." "I don't know that, sir," replied Joe; "if I was sure his lordship would come here I should like it well enough, but I should not like to lie alone with the dog."

Got a Cat named Mouse, Been living in my house, Since the day she was born. I feed her Science Diet, As long as I can buy it, And clean the box every Morn. (Mouse died a year and a half ago.)

We met the whole world, and we never had a minute's peace.

Thanks! That's only part. If memory serves, it continued: She's not the only Cat That's living in my flat And so my place is scorned.

I just found this little one I wrote over in beginnings and endings back in 2009 for my black lab. He is still with me...15.5 years old now and doing very well, it is unbelievable. I am so grateful to him for his friendship. Intently he watches the ducks on the pond The old black lab sits on the shore He can swim no more The hourglass of his Life is running low Yet the sparkle in his eyes has not diminished For his earthly existence is not finished The same spark of Life will live on forever And return.

Last Friday our beloved Siamese cat passed away. This very sad day brought thunderstorms with torrential rain. Mentally and physically exhausted due to our loss and all that goes along with that, I had decided that it may be comforting to take my children to dinner at our favorite restaurant. Given a window seat, we looked out upon the rain and reminisced about the wonderful times we had with our cat through the years. As we were leaving the restaurant the rain ceased, prompting my children to ask if we could go for a drive rather than straight home. The day had brought so much sadness, accentuated with excessive rain, I thought the drive may bring some relief. Much to our surprise, not far along into the drive, we spotted a rainbow. It was the first and only time that all of us had been given an opportunity to see an entire rainbow from end to end, including the arc. The sight of this magnificent rainbow was breathtakingly beautiful, bringing forth an indescribable sense of relief to all of us. We were in awe of the sight before our eyes and the meaning it held for us at the end of this very sad and difficult day. We were left speechless for the remainder of our journey home. Yesterday, we received a sympathy card from our veterinarian. To our absolute shock, enclosed with the card is an insert picturing a rainbow with the following passage superimposed over it... Just this side of heaven lies the Rainbow Bridge. When a beloved pet dies, it goes to the Rainbow Bridge. It makes friends with other animals and frolics over rolling hills and peaceful lush meadows of green. They are as healthy and playful as we remember them in days gone by. Together, the animals chase and play, but the day comes when a pet will suddenly stop and look into the distance... bright eyes intent, eager body quivering. Suddenly recognizing you, your pet bounds quickly across the green fields and into your embrace. You celebrate in joyous reunion. You will never again separate. Happy tears and kisses are warm and plentiful, your hands caress the face you missed. You look into the loving eyes of your pet and know that you never really parted. You realize that though out of sight, your love had been remembered. You cross the Rainbow Bridge together. ![](http://dailycelebrations.com/small_red_heart.gif[/img] [img]<a href=)http://dailycelebrations.com/small_red_heart.gif[/img] [img]http://dailycelebrations.com/small_red_heart.gif"/>

Thanks so much for you expression of sympathy, kittay - very thoughtful and very much appreciated. That was the first time that I had ever read the Rainbow Bridge. An incredibly poignant moment for our family. I never cease to be amazed by the intricate path of our destiny and the roads we cross along the way - quite comforting.

Aww Anita, My (((Sorrows))) go out to your family for your loss of your cat (I know that feeling of losing a pet all too well) It was in a close time frame of my dog passing that I read the Rainbow Bridge poem. I read it again now. It is nice that all of you could capture the rainbow and feel the moment.
