I love this song. I first read the lyrics and decided I must listen to the song. It really is lovely. wow. In this song, as it is the first I have listened to so far, your voice reminds me some of Greg Lake of ELP. Nice guitar and whistling too.
Thank you so much for listening, and delighted you like this one! Especially since the only other people who commented on it so far didn't like it much. I probably will tweak it a bit but I do like it so glad someone else does. It's basically from the heart, anyway, written for my wife more than my other songs were. I want to write something nearly as beautiful as the song she wrote with words from the Bible from the Song of Solomon:
If you like "Am I Wrong?" (which is, btw, a working title I might change), I suppose the others of mine you're most likely to enjoy would be Penguin, Lovers Once and Panda Bear, but that's just a guess as those are the ones probably most similar in style, and my songs are fairly varied. Hope you enjoy some of my other songs anyway! Thanks again!I just listened to "Come Away Song Of Songs 2:10-13" by your wife Deborah. It was just lovely. I will check out the others. Thanks for sharing them with us. Have a great day!

Thinking of entering a song in the UK Songwriting Contest: http://www.songwritingcontest.co.uk/index.html What do people think? Worth a shot? If so then which song is my best bet?

Penguin/Jonathan is the single of yours that I like the best. I think you do some great things on the other ones too... I think I'm bad at picking singles probably overall. Pink Clothes is a good song, structurally and thematically I think it's clever. Girls wear pink clothes, cause I'm a boy should I be blue / blue as in sad etc, good word play. Penguin is a good simple melody, I liked it from the very first listen.

Thanks Ken! Yes, I think I probably will enter Penguin and Jonathan. Just have to pay a bit for each entry. I'd kind of really love to enter Pink Clothes as well, but it's not so clearcut that I wrote that all myself so I'll steer clear of entering that now. Don't want to risk getting disqualified. Anyway you could enter a song or two as well. Tempted?

Nice, I think you are a decent songwriter man, and I mean that in the best way. You should keep doing it, you show a LOT of potential in the way you come up with melodies. You can enter Pink Clothes and not hear about it from me, I'm glad if I gave you some inspiration someplace but I would not claim to have written it, thats your baby. I don't even think you used any of my lyrics, did you? the version I did was the true co-write, I used stuff from everyone. but then rapped it I want to enter competitions like that when I'm sure I should win and I'm not there yet with my songs. as you know, production value plays a big part in these things, and I haven't got that yet. But I will have. in fact I'm in studio this weekend (Sat) doing my songs Oh I, Run, Lights of Lime, and Painted Ladies. Can't wait to hear them produced! The Canary Robbery album is getting there. I'd enter Love Time for a laugh. thats a catchy little ditty, that sounds decent as is. post the link to this competition you're lookng at, maybe I'll throw Love Time at it. Is it through Reverbnation?

Yes seriously, you should enter Love Time! The contest is at http://www.songwritingcontest.co.uk/ and it looks good. Entry fee is £15 per song per category (about $25), anyone can enter and they're not interested in the production - they're judging the songwriting only. You should check it out. I'd love to enter quite a few songs in different categories, if I was a bit better off financially at the moment. I mean Jonathan and Penguin I'll probably enter in the "acoustic / folk" category but it would be exciting to enter maybe "Killing Time" in the rock category or "Pink Clothes" in the ?Pop category, or possibly even "In My Chair" in the blues/jazz category based on what I'd like them to be. According to the rules and guidelines that woul be fine. In a way that would be much more exciting if there's a chance of them getting a decent production, than entering Penguin and Jonathan which I'm in a way quite happy with as they are. And if I had a bit more money still I could enter "Lovers Once" in the "Love" category and "Flaunted Vice" and "I hope you don't think I'm too strange" in the "open" category...
-
"Love Time" is a hit if you ask me. Same with "Something I Can't Explain." And, Jon, I loved that hilarious "I Hope You Don't Find Me To Be Strange"(sic) track you did over the summer.
-
I agree, you should definitely enter Penguin and Jonathan.

In the end, after a lot of agonising and contradictory advice from people, the three I entered were: -Penguin
(Acoustic/Folk category) -In My Chair (Open Category) -Lovers Once (Love Songs category) Excited to see what happens!! Josh also entered his song "Little Box/Summer Solstice" -

Lot of money to be made winning that thing! best of luck to you and Josh. I feel like all our songs are good enough to win! but watch some dude turns in the next Bohemian Rhapsody and we're screwed..

New take of Magic Peas:
Song I wrote way back in 2000, with words more or less taken from Psalm 137 (Rivers of Babylon lament) newly recorded: ...and a silly little doodle! I've now also recorded a demo of a new song "Job's Blues" based on the book of Job, and will be putting that up soon. -
Here's Job's Blues:
Job in the Bible had a hard time. Everything went wrong and then when his religious friends turned up to try and comfort him it got worse. Lyrics: Do I have to listen to my religious friends? They're on a mission. The preaching never ends Now, I am hurting. My life's been turned inside-out And they're so certain why it happened, and they don't have a doubt, but... There's a lot they don't know about me (They think they've got it sussed but) There's a lot they don't know They don't see that their religion will not help me And without hesitation, they assume I must have sinned Ain't no other explanation for the mess I'm in This must be retribution for all my unrighteous acts Well, that's their conclusion, but they don't have all the facts They assume I'm to blame. They don't see (I wish it was that simple) And they speak in God's name But they don't know what He's doing any better than me My life rots away. My body's in pain. My family's gone, let me drown in the rain ?Oh God why have you picked on me?? - That's what they hear me shout And so they think that it's up to them to sort me out But if their God's as mighty as they constantly claim Why does he need defending by the likes of them? So I'll scream and I'll curse as I pray Why won't they let me be? It's God who has mercilessly wrecked my life And now only God can help me Do I have to listen to my religious friends? They're on a mission. The preaching never ends Now, I am hurting. My life's been turned inside-out And they're so certain why it happened, and they don't have a doubt, but... There's a lot they don't know about me And there's a lot I don't know I don't see the point of all this pain and grief Pain and grief -
Great lyrics Jon! Thee Actual Original Christians believed that God was Everywhere...and not confined to any particular religion or denomination or temple or building etc. "We Are Of The Universe"...

What's up Jonny! I'm not just blowing smoke up your ass when I tell you, that's an amazing song man! I could break down thoughts for you more but I don't have time. Lyrically it's great of course, but some of the things it does musically, the little bridges and stuff all seem so natural. I'm not even kidding, you're as good a song writer as any that's shown their face on this forum and I can hear it produced so many different ways; artists like Dave Matthews, Jason Mraz would have a field day. Big rock would work too, like Oasis, Maroon 5 (audi's favorite band ), could work so many ways. You guys have a folk rock sound and that works well as well. You should end that song at 3mins would be my only suggestion. Rock on my brother. And keep thinking about that Big Fat Hairy Monster jam, cause I really like that one too!

KPU, thanks so much for this. Now I have to get that smoke out of my ass (I always found that expression weird and kind of disturbing)!! Really glad you like it - I'm pretty pleased with it. Performed it for a few people a church tonight and it was good fun. Thinking about how to cut it down to 3 minutes now - never easy to do well. I tried cutting that Am I Wrong one right down and I just wrecked it I think, so didn't even bother to record that version. On this recording of Job's blues Magnus used a makeshift capo made out of a pencil and a rubber band!! The logistics of meeting up with him to do recording are getting tricky now as he's really busy and doesn't have transport and has to borrow someone else's guitar unless I can go to his... yadayada!

I totally just used that oddball somewhat crass expression cause I knew you'd get a laugh out of it but seriously I was not blowing smoke so you have nothing to extract, truly I'm with you man, I've shut it down musically until late Jan 2013. recording wise. now I guess I should be writing... but I just don't really feel it right now. Had it going there for a while, but my minds on family right now. artistically uninspired. I've been inspired recently listening to a lot of Nirvana. say what you will about Kurt Cobain as a troubled individual, that guy was a genius. SO OVERWHELMINGLY POWERFUL. makes me feel so meek as an artist. sort of like John and Paul do, but Kurt almost even more so because he was so freaking powerful. I cannot imagine having a voice like that, and the feeling he must have had while making the sounds he did. Its really been fun just listening back on all those oddball Nirvana tunes I once worshipped. and their Unplugged album blows me away as well. that is a really tragedy that guy. RIP Kurt, and great great work. I hope you know what a madman you were. You keep doing your thing JS. you continue to impress

Did you see that documentary that strongly implies that Courtney Love was the mastermind behind Cobain's death? Oh, those darn conspiracy theories. The Illuminati killed Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. Courtney killed Kurt... ...but I digress.

Yeah I did see that program when it first came out and it was somewhat compelling. In the end though I had trouble buying the credibility of the eyewitnesses in it. The toothless hicks, etc. it seems you'd be able to pay most of the people in that video two bucks to say whatever you needed them to say... Just knowing Kurt's struggle with heroin addiction and depression, I find it amazingly simple to believe he got so low that he took his own life. I don't believe Courtney was responsible.
-
Heroin ain't no joke. Thank God I never got into that.

Guys, MUST you clutter up my thread with this bilge? :
