I think this thread has lost it's meaning a little, I mean The Night Before and Golden Slumbers were nice additions but certainly not TOTALLY unexpected. If anything it was expected that he was going to add The Night Before and bring back Golden Slumbers sooner rather than late. I'm Looking Through You wasn't TOTALLY unexpected either, it's an album track just like Drive My Car and he's been playing it for years. Just another Beatles song to add to the huge list that he's done through the years, same with Day Tripper etc IMO. Wonderful Christmastime wasn't OMG I DIDN'T EXPECT THAT either, we were all talking about it before he did it and he'd already done it at his last set of Christmas shows in '79.

Your overall point is well-taken. However, "The Night Before" and "Wonderful Christmastime" weren't on my radar at all, and were real surprises to me. Going forward, I'm reluctant to post any future Beatle additions*, because I do share your position. "Cosmically Conscious," "Letting Go," "Hope Of Deliverance" and "Great Day," among others, are the biggest jaw-droppers in my book. *=How many are left, anyway?

The Night Before was certainly unexpected to me! Now if he plays What You're Doing or Oh! Darling, now that would be unexpected!

Would you be saying that if Paul whipped out "Getting Closer"?

I'd be surprised but not shocked, as the choices of Macca-Beatle songs to add are getting fewer and fewer.

Another testament to what a great band they are.

No but that's different! A sizeable group were talking about the possibility of Wonderful Christmastime, if it is speculated before the show then it's not a massive shock IMO. Similarly The Night Before had been talked about for a good few years before it happened.

A sizebale group had wished for "Venus & Mars/Rockshow" as well, and we were all gape-jawed when Paul kicked off his 2010 tour with it. I don't think that merely discussing a song in this forum negates its qualification for this thread. A lot of us were convinced that Paul was running away from his Wings/solo legacy at one point, so we were genuinely shocked when he finally started performing those songs again.

This is very true!!! Too Many People, Hope of Deliverance, Come and Get It and Letting Go have been the biggest shocks in the last 10 years for me personally. They all came completely out of nowhere!!

I'm curious: What song(s) would totally shock you these days?

...The Word surprised me at the time too but I've got to the stage that I now feel any Beatles song is fair game to Paul.

Probably a song that I haven't thought about, if he sang something like Beautiful Night, Listen to What the Man Said or Silly Love Songs I would be delighted but I dunno if I would say shocked as such because they are leading contenders amongst the fans for new songs in the set. I guess anything "obscure" that a casual fan wouldn't know would shock me, The Word surprised me at the time too but I've got to the stage that I now feel any Beatles song is fair game to Paul.
-
It's worth adding though that I don't just rate additions to the set by their "shock factor", I mean sometimes you want to hear the songs that you would expect. You don't want every song to be obscure, I like the entire audience having a party and I want to hear his big solo hits like Uncle Albert, Silly Love Songs, Listen to What the Man Said, Another Day etc etc. All those songs should be expected but I would still love to hear them. Hope of Deliverance was a huge shock but personally I'd rather hear one of the others that might be less shocking.

You'd think. Sometimes I wonder.
