I'm now watching the newest movie version of Star Trek. I love Star Trek, the original series, and this is my second time seeing the movie. Still not sure how I feel about this movie. Any thoughts?

It's definitely a good movie. I'm just not sure how good it is compared to the original series...any Trekkies out there?

So what comes after your name when you get your doctor credentials? In the US, it's an MD, you know, like House has.

Well Jen, interesting you should mention that out of the blue like this... When I graduate I get MB BCh BaO then when I join a Royal College I get MRCP (MRCS, MRCPaed, MRCGP etc) and hopefully one day FRCPaed. MD is waaaay cooler! If you do a postgraduate research project in Medicine I think you can get an MD over here...

I got curious after our conversation that other night in a different thread. This seems, oh, a bit convoluted. I'd rather just have the MD tag, wouldn't you? Or is it easier to know what specialty someone has by the letters after their name?

You can broadly tell their specialty by the letters but with all the sub-specialties it's not worth a lot. As far as I know the MD part is equivalent to the BM part of mine (Bachelor of Medicine) but then we add BCh (Bachelor Surgery) and my uni adds BaO (Bachelor Obstetrics). I would imagine the US has some sort of post grad system like our MRCP but I dunno. I edited above but I think we can get an MD over here if we do a post-grad research project in medicine.

Sounds all kinds of confusing, especially if you travel overseas. Of course, if a US doctor with an MD traveled overseas, I guess they would get the same confusion...

I think the only bit that people really need to know is the Dr. part! Unless you're seeing a surgeon then it's Mr. haha!

And if it's Mr. haha, you probably should get a new surgeon.
