Hi All I thought this would be as good a place as any to ask for advice on rearing an abandoned kitten (3 days old) please He's eating & peeing but not pooping ... he seems to be keeping warm, but I'm not 100% sure, as it's pretty hot out anyway I'm just worried I'm doing something wrong/ not doing it properly Can anybody with any experience at all either reply to this or PM me, please? Thanks so much xxxxx

There's lots of advice on-line: http://www.feralcat.com/raising.html http://www.2ndchance.info/orphankitten.htm Well done on taking this on, but do get a veterinary practice involved if possible. Are you local to any good animal charities that can support you? If you intend to keep the kitten I'm sure they'll support and assist, if not it might be better to hand the wee thing into an animal charity with a non-destruction policy... Martin

Hi Claire. Are you feeding the kitten a suitable milk replacement formula? I have KMR or Kittens Milk Replacer, get it at any good pet store. Read directions. Also there is the 'bene-bac' which comes in a little tube, it is to ensure proper DIGESTION. You can do this with squirrels too...same thing. I have found that in nursing baby squirrels using the samew methods and formulas as kittens, if you do not feed them the bene-bac they can die! Their little bellies swell up and they die! (not all the time, but it is not a rare occurrence 4 them to die.) *some KMR comes with bene-bac and some without read the label. So bene-bac and the MKR or another suitable milk replacement formula will do. Warming the formula just enough as well not cold. And you will know when they are hungry as they will usually cry 4 u. Also the baby needs a heating pad set on LOW. But put a towel or another suitable cloth over it so as not to burn he/she. OH! and if the little one is not peeing/pooping, wet your finger and rub the genitalia back and forth and also you can lightly massage the abdomen. Good luck! ❤

Thanks Martin & Kittay I have a hot water bottle & fluffy pyjamas legs wrapped around that to prevent burns I'm gettn Kitten Replacement milk into him/ her but I don't know what that bene-bac is..please enlighten me as I don't want the little puddin to be in pain or not getting proper care I'm rubbing his bum with a warm piece of toilet roll & he's peeing, but not pooping (should I be worried?!) Yes..I think I will bring him/ her to a Vet in the morning, just to make sure I'm not over feeding the wee mite, etc 😉 Thanks guys xxxxxxx

Great news! Okay here is a link I found 4 bene-bac (short for beneficial bacteria) for cats: but you will need the kitten kind. I found mine at Petsmart, but you can find it at any good pet store. Here is a link so you can see what a tube looks like: http://www.probioticsmart.com/pets/bene-bac-cat-gel.html But like I stated some milk replacement formulas already come with it in there so check the label. But I found in very sad trial and errors in feeding stressed out baby rabbits and squirrels that if I did not administer the bene-bac first they died within 2 days. So just to be on the safe side I give it as soon as I find the animal. But I keep it on hand at all times, as I rescue animals whenever I can. The bene-bac is 4 the digestive system when an animal has not had the mother's natural milk filled with the things it needs, and/or the animal is stressed. Keep us all informed. I am happy your kitty is doing well. about the not pooping part. if it continues then I would be worried and the bene-bac will help. you will see the belly swell and then it will b 2 late.
