Paul McCartney has officially become an oldies act.

Who needs enemies with so called friends like this? Paul has had to take unfair criticism from the press and so called 'experts' ever since the Beatles broke up. How he keeps going i will never know. There are always those to criticise him once again. Thank god he knows there are people who appreciate the fact that he does keep performing. As i have said before on this board there is no way John would have still been out there. BTW Paul's 'Let it Be' is every good as 'Johns 'Imagine' Yes, i know he recorded it has a'Beatle' but it is his song.

I've read quite a few of the left hand man rantings on this topic, but this comment destroys any shred of credibility for him. From here on I'll just skip over his comments.
I was at Anfield, and the groans were very audible when he launched into Long and Winding Road, C-Moon, Let Me Roll It... I saw it first hand. It is happening.
That's just bull.
With all respect I was there seated in the Kop, and the groans around me were real and they were AUDIBLE.
Oh please, we're not THAT stupid to believe your story.

You must be so disappointed. (just teasing)

"Oldies" acts don't have fans who complain about neglected songs in their vast catalogues, which include new hits.

The set list debate is a fascinating one still. I had a young guy of about 16 come into the retailers i work in to look at Beatle T-Shirts,and we started to have a conversation about the band.He said Sgt Pepper was one of the greatest albums ever made, and he'd love to see McCartney live because what he'd seen on TV was awesome.I told him that a lot of Paul fans want him to drop what i call the "Holy Trinity"of Beatle songs, and he was disturbed that he wouldn't get to hear Hey Jude,Let It Be and the rest.I did reassure him that it was unlikely Paul would drop the big Beatle songs from his show, even with a radical set overhaul. It was great to see a young kid so into the group that he was so jealous that i'd seen Paul six times.Funny thing was he said his dad hated the Beatles, so it wasn't a family tradition he was holding up but starting up.It was nice to talk to someone who was fascinated by my Paul stories and not bored by them.

Just watched the clips from McCartney's show at Anfield. hmmm.....I wonder, does thousands of people singing along with Paul McCartney on Hey Jude, Live And Let Die and Let It Be constitue groaning???? Boy, they sure weren't having a good time from what I could tell. I mean, how could anyone possibly have a good time singing their lungs out. : I think certain individuals on here need to stop trying to distort the truth. Just enjoy the show for goodness sake.

Cool, an english version of me! Except I think the white album and abbey road are much better than sgt. pepper to be honest.

I'm one of those who would like a overhaul of the set list, but i will still go and enjoy the show when Paul tours, probably for the last time. From my point of view,it's just a change would be good for Paul and the band too.A lot of the time bands split up not just over musical differences but out of boredom,i wouldn't like to see the current group fragment because they got fed up playing the same old songs over and over again,it would be a crying shame. So CharlieD,have you got round to buying Ram yet,or any other Macca and Wings albums on your beloved vinyl?I do envy your position of so much to discover still.Get "Back To The Egg" if you can it's rockin',you can see about 8 songs on youtube as they made videos to promote the album at the time. The songs are: GETTING CLOSER,SPIN IT ON,AGAIN AGAIN AGAIN,OLD SIAM,SIR,ARROW THROUGH ME,WINTER ROSE/LOVE AWAKE,BABY'S REQUEST.and one other that was secretly filmed which you have to look for seperately is ROCKESTRA THEME. Hope you enjoy them!

DavidP, I take exception to a couple of your post! Get it right, no one said the vast majority of people at any McCartney show were moaning and groaning! I don't think anyone on this thread got that impression! What we have said and will continue to say is that there are people who are starting to moan and groan about McCartney's setlist. You must be able to realize this because some of them are on this very forum, I am one of them. Again go back and read all the evidence I've posted. I just posted that I didn't attend his last tour because of the setlist, do you honestly think that I am the only person on the planet who did that, surely you aren't that naive! In reviews of McCartney's show at Glastonbury they said that some in the audience were jeering him for performing certain songs, was it most of the people, certainly not, but the fact remains that people are starting to moan and groan! Boycie, an experience that excited me was seeing a teenager with a giant Wings logo on his T-shirt! He was gone before I had the chance to ask him where he got it, I'd like to have one myself! As I've also said before, if McCartney would change his setlist, most of the songs may be old, but his actual show wouldn't be!

Yes Left hand man it's great to see youngsters enthralled by the sixties greats. The young guy who i mentioned in earlier post was a little dumbstruck that i'd seen not just Paul but The Who,Brian Wilson and Ray Davies, and the last three in the last year, and Brian twice in a year.I felt like a '60's guru as he looked so enthralled as well as envious. I'd love a Wings T-Shirt too,i missed getting one on the last tour, mind you i was 15 at the time,i guess it wouldn't fit now nearly 30 years down the line, though i'm not a fat 44,and only 2 inches bigger round the waist than i was then.

DavidP, here's part of the review of McCartney's Glastonbury performance by Tom Bishop of BBC news. Don't want you to think that I'm just making it up. Tom Bishop His purple suit and red shirt were plain in comparison to the Spice Girls dress and furry tail worn earlier by Glastonbury performers PJ Harvey and Alison Goldfrapp respectively. But Sir Paul has an unrivalled pop history to leaf through, and sing-alongs Penny Lane, Lady Madonna and Yellow Submarine kept most of the rain at bay. Younger festival goers showed a healthy disrespect for Sir Paul, in the same way that the Beatles once poked fun at authority. Yet no amount of heckling could persuade him to perform A Hard Day's Night or The Frog Chorus, and shouts of "boring" did nothing to silence Sir Paul's drawn-out Beatles anecdotes. McCartney really needs to change his setlist!

Um, yeah, that doesn't prove your point at all. It says "festival-goers". Not "fans". Sweet reading skills buddy.

I agree - there's no way that happened...and if by the off chance it did, it was a very isolated incident. During 2002 and 2005, the audience 'lapped up' any Beatles or Wings song that was played. Unfortunately, they did use the new songs for bathroom/refreshment breaks - which is too bad because they missed some great performances. Or if it really did happen, one major part of the story was missing - He/she went to the show with some of their fellow Beatle hatin' friends and it was them who groaned .
-
I'm not so sure that's the true story in Glasto, from everything else I read and heard, the audience went crazy for him. With Paul, you can always find a critic that will throw in something about the Frog Chorus.

Till this day I don't understand what's wrong with the Frog Chorus ? Isn't it lovely ? The chords sequence are wrong ? did he sing out of tune ? what's the problem with this song ? Sounds great to me.
-
People always forget that 'The Frogs Chorus' was written for a children's animated film. It was never meant to be a serious song. Take it for what it is and enjoy it!
-
I totally agree about the Frog Chorus, it was for children and the criticism is totally taken out of context. CharlieD, are you saying that festival goers can't be fans? RichN, of course the complaints are isolated incidents, but those isolated incidents are showing up in more and more places with more and more frequency and some of the people that are complaining are reporters, journalists, reviewers, and music critics, and of course fans! Guys where do you think the people were that wrote all the reviews I've been posting, they were at McCartney's shows, so that's proof right there that it is happening! The people who were complaining about Hey Jude at the show I attended, I'd never seen before in my life, (they took that opportunity to go on their bathroom break, it doesn't just happen during new songs) so they weren't any of my Beatle hating friends, in fact I don't have any Beatle hating friends, but I do have friends and know people who think it's time for McCartney to change his setlist. When those complainers came back from their break I tried to share with them how great the singalong to Hey Jude was (it was one of the special moments of the concert for me) but they just gave me a funny look and said they"d heard it enough times and would rather hear No More Lonely Nights! Guys, it's definitely happening!
