Cecil The Lion

Recent update from BBC News http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-33710613 Hopefully this will have some consideration for other types of Hunting for "Sport" RIP Cecil

Like many of the dogs of Yulin, the tragedy of this act is that Cecil was a tame study who trusted people. And I have yet to hear about the fate of the head and pelt. Did the hunter bring those things home to America? He obviously left the country before the trouble came to light. Does he still possess those body parts? If I could trust the science of it; that it would not result in misery for the creature, I would consider cloning him.
-
The reports are that the head and skin were confiscated for the criminal investigation.
-
I tweeted this story to Paul yesterday. I'm sure he was appalled as we are.
-
It was on ET last night. All the celebrities are appalled too & were tweeting all over the place against him.
-
I hope this dentist gets the book thrown at him big time. Disgusting doesn't even begin to describe what he and those guides did to this beautiful creature. Trophy hunting should have been outlawed decades ago.
-
Some information here. But I am very sick of seeing pictures of that dentist. The video of the transport of the arrested suspect, "Zimbabwean Hunter Charged With Killing Lion", is a treat, particularly for the comments by the people there. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3178821/Pictured-court-face-charges-poaching-Two-accomplices-accused-helping-dentist-kill-Cecil-lion-appear-magistrates-Zimbabwe.html

I think the Dentist should be prosecuted and it might be a good thing for him to consider making ammends rather than claiming no knowledge about the protected status of Cecil. As much as people should be outraged about this situation, I think trophy game hunting in general needs to be addressed and stopped in the long run.
-
Interestingly enough, the official U.S. whitehouse.gov site has a "We the People" petition online which pleads for the extradition of the dentist to stand trial in Zimbabwe. It already has over 100 thousand signatures. I don't know whether they will accept signatures from non-citizens (You can try it; this is of international interest). You can read about it and sign it here: https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/extradite-minnesotan-walter-james-palmer-face-justice-zimbabwe There is also a change.org petition: https://www.change.org/p/justice-for-cecil-the-iconic-collared-lion-slaughtered-by-trophy-hunter

I have to admit it. I am intrigued by a White House petition, and what John Kerry will have to say about it. EDIT: It occurs to me. They took the head and skin of Cecil after they failed to destroy the GPS collar, and they then kept those body parts for taxidermy after they knew that they had committed an illegal kill.

Yes. They knew exactly what lion they were going after. I don't belive the we didn't know story they are trying to spin.

Should have done. Should have done. A voice from the past speaks: From March 2013: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/27/science/lion-researchers-call-for-more-fences-to-save-the-big-cats.html?_r=0 From just the other day: http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation-now/2015/07/30/cecil--lion-conservation-wildlife/30882321/

Now they are reporting that somebody shot and killed Cecil's brother Jericho today. Jericho had been protecting Cecil's cubs from other lions trying to take over the his pride, now they have no protection.
-
How can this be? Was this a local hunter? Did the hunter know about Cecil? Was the kill deliberate, as in bagging Jericho? Did Cecil's death spark a financial interest in trophies?

Apparently it wasn't jericho but another lion. Oxford said they still have tracking on him. The major news outlets were reporting jericho when it wasn't. Still so sad about the other lion though that was killed even after the hunting ban was put into place today.
-
Yes. The hunting ban is a damn good thing, particularly when there appears to be no fencing around that sanctuary, and because of the zeal of certain idiots to abuse that fact.
