That's Pinkpop for ya. But curfew is extended to midnight since a few years - was always 23:00 lol - so I'm pretty certain he will go on until midnight, making the set 2 hours in total. They mentioned this as well. Typical of them to not just put it like that in the schedule, but yes. Late starter for Pinkpop as well, possibly for the fireworks? It's June in The Netherlands, the sun isn't fully down until 23-ish.

http://www.nporadio2.nl/gemist/video/2341/pinkpop Arriving by private jet at Maastricht Aachen Airport, due to the noise restrictions in The Netherlands after 23:00 he will fly back from Li?ge Airport. 18 trucks with equipment. 68 tonnes (as in, 1000 kilos) of equipment on stage. The first artist with a "portrait screen" instead of a horizontal one, whatever that means. And a dedicated kitchen and cook. And they are still having the silly proposal to get him to play 'All You Need Is Love' as closer, since that's the annual closer of Pinkpop (from tape)...

And another extra 15 minutes for McCartney. He now starts in broad daylight at 21:45, but at least plays 2 hours.

Yes, that's only about 30 minutes less than the current full set, and without extensive encore break and the whole fair parade of fans on stage it's not that bad of a cut at all in the end. I hope the gig will open the eyes of the general audience in The Netherlands.

Macca has given 5 concerts in the country in the last decade and Pinkpop has been going on for almost 50 yrs, the last ten years or so with big headliners. So what the public will see when they "open their eyes" is probably nothing unexpected, EXCEPT when Paul plays something unexpected or closes the festival with " All you need is love". Really hoping for that because they play it each year and an ex- Beatle singing it live would be quite something....

Fingers crossed he closes with All You Need Is Love. Surely the tradition will be made known to him. And he has done The Word/All You Need Is Love in 2011...and of course the full song before that at Party at The Palace. Failing that - anything new would be nice.

You gotta admit the reputation of McCartney for the general audience in The Netherlands is the stereotype: "granny songs", "Frog Song", "nothing done in the last 45 years","vain attitude", etc. We all saw the cringe-worthy "items" about him at De Wereld Draait Door, Pauw/Jinek, RTL Late Night, in the last few years. People are clueless. Even the "experts" don't come much further than the stale anecdotes about Countdown from the 80's - "a Beatle visited little ol' Bussum!" and during the desperate promotion of the Ziggo Dome gigs last year to get at least a few tickets of the second night sold for the full price, I don't even know if the guests were promoting him or doing him even more damage. Almost every fish and chips music person in my surrounding was whining and sighing at the announcement of McCartney headlining Pinkpop: they hoped for the same boring Foo Fighters/Muse/Kings of Leon McDonalds-rock circle. The agism-jokes were endless. They barely know a Beatles tune! My point is, with the heavy price tag of a standalone show, no one from that crowd is going to get their mind changed on him based on any of the 5 gigs in the last 15 years in The Netherlands, because they will never buy a ticket for it. A festival is the perfect opportunity to get a whole new and different crowd to appreciate an artist. The problem with Pinkpop is that no serious music listener will torture itself with a line-up like this, but at least the buzz will be on and I'm sure he will win over every doubting soul. Whether they are watching a snippet on television from the couch at home, seeing the glaring reviews on social media, or the weekend goers on the field itself. I saw it happen myself at Ziggo Dome with a few non-fans friends (and their friends) who got free tickets for the second gig last year, they almost all went home as a fan.

Understand your point ! I was surprised that even the very critical magazine "Oor" had a very positive review of Dusseldorf. There were times whe they bashed everything that McCartney did... Also I see a lot of teenagers at the concerts, genuinely enjoying themselves. It seems every generation is discovering "old music"...

Yes, it's a great thing. And I really think the Pinkpop headline set will contribute to that. Same happened with The Rolling Stones after Pinkpop. A bit different since it was their first (and possibly last...) gig in The Netherlands in 7 years. But it was a big event, because suddenly everyone seemed to revalue them. From the young and unknowing silly radio DJ's who can't sporadically play a hit record by them without having to look up the title, to the young social media crowd who came for other acts on the bill. In the beginning, especially after all the negativeness when his name was being rumoured, I had my doubts. Especially after him playing over there twice only half a year before the tickets went on sale (which are going down in price on secondary market by the day, but that's another story). That's why I said "why bother", because I thought it should be above an artist like McCartney. But it seems the buzz is on: http://festileaks.com/2016/05/voorbeschouwing-paul-mccartney-op-pinkpop-2016/ http://festileaks.com/2016/05/video-paul-mccartney-is-klaar-festivalzomer/ and more like that. And OOR - for those who don't know - even had him on the front cover. Although the journalist who did the recent review, Jan van der Plas, was always pretty favourable about McCartney anyway. "Six post-Beatles classics on 'Chaos'", he once rightfully said. Actually, they still had a few stupid digs in the magazine, first about Linda in the article itself and a few other points like that, but also in a review of an act I can't remember, they used Paul McCartney as comparison to "the lesser talented one", like *this artist is* "the Miles Kane to Alex Turner, the Paul McCartney to John Lennon"...

They put even more tickets on sale now. And they try to get rid of the Sunday (McCartney) tickets the hardest, by giving away day tickets at subscription of a music magazine. As predicted this is far from the Stones run on ticket some might have expected. It's too little, too late.

The main stage for the festival is build around McCartney's rider, and is the biggest stage in size they ever had. It's funny how McCartney even for the oldest and one of the most legendary festivals in the world can still make things special.

If I would've been in the country I would've suffered through Pinkpop after all for this price! Even more cheap than the dump prices for Amsterdam last year. http://www.seatwave.nl/pinkpop-kaarten-tickets/seizoen

6 in a row, someone post something! Quite a few articles on the Pinkpop booking. Newspaper De Limburger got the scoop on the exclusive interview, will be published within a few hours, a short soundbyte here: http://www.limburger.nl/cnt/dmf20160607_00020945/exclusief-interview-met-paul-mccartney And here their explanation why the price of Pinkpop has risen to 195 euros in 2016: http://www.limburger.nl/cnt/dmf20160607_00020949/waarom-een-pinkpop-kaartje-bijna-200-euro-kost Not really worth translating, speaks for itself. And then there's this... https://www.counterculture.nl/2016/06/counterculture-tipt-de-xxl-pinkpop-2016-preview/ "Will Pinkpop be able to get Paul McCartney to play 'All You Need Is Love' for the 9th time in his career?" Huh? It's either 16 times in total (13 times in a medley with 'The Word', twice spontaneously a chorus, one time in full for the Golden Jubliee of Elizabeth II with 50 guests on stage) or never before solo in full... Plus: "he will close his set with the somewhat obscure Beatles-track 'The End'." Sure, the climax of 'Abbey Road', classics of all classics, tens of million copies worldwide, a somewhat obscure track... Then a full-blown article in the VARA TV guide purely focused on the booking. It's an interview with the old festival organiser mascotte Jan Smeets and the booker Leon Ramakers. The former has a great way to make his mega festival seem so clumsy and provincial. In this article as well again, as if they are booking a big act for the first time. It starts off with the same anecdote about Springsteen convincing McCartney to do festivals, and to start at Pinkpop. Then there's a laughable story about how they booked McCartney for 2013, until it appeared that his management wrote down the wrong date. Pinkpop comes from Pinksteren, Pentecoast. The festival was always held during that weekend, including the Monday. These days they only can get headliners when all other festivals in the region are on as well. So when it's in May it comes way too early in the season, and they often change the dates to a weekend in June, just like this year. Yes, of course in 2013 the management just assumed it was with Pentecoast and went through with that, as they would do... But Pinkpop changed the dates for the first time ever, and in the new weekend McCartney already did Bonnaroo! Bullshit of course, after 2008 and 2010 it was already the third time they changed the dates, and as if the management of McCartney settles a deal on a Chinese Whisper. I don't believe a single thing of it. He was simply still too expensive and too exclusive at the time. Plus, eventually in the weeks surrounding Pentecoast he was kicking off a new tour in South and North America. This story insinuates - "we began to get a little bit worried, we had to get the names out", paraphrasing - that these moves were done very late in the booking game. How big is the chance all those dates he did in the end at the other side of the world fell from the sky from the moment they knew Pinkpop "fell through"? Nope, nope. McCartney became an option after Pearl Jam cancelled all negotiations for 2016 in Europe. He would do a charity gig in the same period on the continent - London later this month, already known since November, let alone booked, so that seems fair - and everything fell into place. Jan Smeets mentions "tons extra" (this time meaning 100,000 euros, haha) on costs on the festival, weekend tickets had to go up in price with 15 euros because of the booking. But it was an easy deal, since booker Leon Ramakers is a good friend of McCartney's booker Barrie Marshall, and their contact goes back to 1972, when they booked the first solo McCartney tour together. It's the foundation of endless of painless bookings of McCartney in The Netherlands, from 1976 to 1989 to 1993 to 2003 to 2009 to 2012 and 2015, at the highlight even 4 gigs at the same place. Therefore the negotiations only took 2 days, the sum of money was transferred in one go. An exact fee they won't mention, but it's the most expensive Pinkpop booking of all time, which makes it more expensive than The Rolling Stones, who got mentioned for 2 to 4 million. That's a long way from that tour of 1972, which turned out to be a flop, with 600 paying attendees in Groningen and only 300 in Antwerp. A lot of material and equipment is from McCartney's team itself, I already mentioned those figures. He considers it as a regular solo show, and doesn't water down anything. The production is immense, they had to get the biggest and strongest stage they ever had, he's got a private plane, an own backstage compound and an own cook. Well, well, well. Like said, talked about as if they never booked a bigger act. Ramakers mentions that a booking like Pinkpop is good for McCartney as well, it gives an artists career a new impulse. He mentions himself that McCartney doesn't need that at all, obviously, but still there will be a whole new audience being wowed by him who otherwise would never buy a record let alone a ticket to a show. That's why festivals are so amazing. (Just a shame his Dutch festival gig is at this place, no way I would ever go there again...) The festival always ends with a speech by Jan Smeets in which he thanks everyone from the local bakery to the lavatory attendant, from time to time interrupted by himself nursing his crowd - "come on, guys, quench that fire! And drink enough water! And leave the site now, it's past 23 already! Close the bars!" - and afterwards there's fireworks and 'All You Need Is Love' is played from tape. Just like the cozy local fair. Pinkpop, the oldest and longest running music festival in the world... In another new interview Jan Smeets elaborates on the McCartney booking, including this: http://3voor12.vpro.nl/nieuws/2016/juni/jan-smeets-pinkpop-vooruitblik.html Is McCartney going to play it as closer, instead of the organisation playing it from tape? "They are still working on that. It's not on his setlist. At this moment they are talking about it with his management. We made clear it's the tradition to play 'Ol Joe Niet Is Luv'. If he doesn't do it, we will have a few seconds of a break, and then I will top it after all with 'All You Need Is Love' from tape plus the fireworks." Alright... In a bit De Limburger will publish their exclusive interview with McCartney. "Just imagine, exclusive, he called himself! Everyone is flabbergasted. A conversation of 25 minutes. This is sensational." He repeated the story about 2013, getting more silly by the sentence. The organisation had to share the list of the food available on the festival. They received a reply from the management, "well done, Pinkpop", this is how it should be at all festivals. Well, I saw plenty of festivals in the world, and Pinkpop has one of the most casual food stalls in The Netherlands alone, let alone elsewhere. Also, the Meat Free Monday crew will be on site for 3 days. That's about it for now, you can say while tickets are going for less than 50% face value, the buzz is on.

I hope they do close with AYNIL (ie) a live performance. If it has been the tradition through however many years not only would it seem the logical thing to do; and a one-off treat, but almost churlish not to do it! Sounds like there are rumblings afoot. Fingers crossed.
