And now for something completely different...
Fil and I share a love of a particular type of music known as "American Standards". I'm guessing at least some of you won't be familiar with this genre cuz you're either too young
or are living on a side of the planet where it's perhaps not so prevalent. Anyway, the era from which this music comes is roughly the 1930's and 1940's, and a lot of it was used in, and often composed for, old Broadway musicals, by composers such as the infamous Irving Berlin. Over time, many of those old Broadway shows became movies and the music was found again in that medium. This particular Berlin song however, (although from the same genre and era) , was written expressly for a "musical film", entitled "Follow the Fleet" (1936), starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. http://www.reelclassics.com/Teams/Fred&Ginger/fred&ginger5.htm Over the decades, this great song has since been recorded by many of music's greatest artists including: --Anita O'Day (1956) --Ella Fitzgerald (195
--Nat King Cole (1961) --Frank Sinatra (1961) --Tony Bennett (1987) --Diane Krall (1999) ....and many more, all in various styles. Actually, that's the beauty of this song, I think. The number of different ways it can be done is staggering, and a YouTube search will reveal some real gems to you, if you're interested.
In our version, Fil has done all guitar work, production, and "artwork"
(shown here), and the vocal work is mine.
So, without further delay (and not without it's flaws

), Fil and I happily share with you............... Let's Face the Music and Dance!

It's not my kind of music.
ops: But it's a perfect rendition of this songs. Christy you have a great voice.
Fils' guitar work is marvellous.
Hey Mieke! Yeah, music from that era isn't for everybody
but thanks for your kind words just the same.
Fil did indeed do amazing guitar work on this one.....funny how he makes it sound so easy too, eh? He actually did struggle with this one, but you'd never know it to hear the end result.

Tina....FANTASTIC troller.
Thanks for that.....I know how time consuming they are to do... thanks for the effort!
And thanks too, for your nice words!
Nice words???...I said something "nice".
..sheesh I must be slipping
Oooh....hurry up with what you're going to post...I have to assume the mantle of "chauffeur" for my mom very soon.
Hey Tina! It's not quite finished cooking....soon though!
Is it soup or stew?! Maybe some sour herring?!
Hmmm....probably more of a stew, considering that it's been simmering for a loooonnng time.
ops:
As for "sour"........well, you'll have to tell us. I'm thinkin' that a couple of the notes might be!
But you decide!
I got to taste it a bit before, so I knew it could be digested!
And I am always into trying the stuff that most of you find gross!
HEY!!! Just what exactly are you trying to say?!?!

Yabba dabba doo!!!
Frisk my whiskers!!
I'm jazzing around the room!!
Where is my dance partner when I need one?!
Wait, I forgot, I don't feel like dancing!
Love this arrangement, you've sure made a hot plate!!
Thank you, Bjorn! Hey, if you liked it that well, maybe you should consider doing something from that era, too.
There's a lot of freedom and flexibility and room for creativity in many of those old tunes.

puf, not dropping by for two days and everything is changed!!! well i need time to listen to all this music, better start quickly
Hi Γzgecan! Yeah, a few things have happened since you were last here, but as they say, "the more things change, the more they stay the same".
You'll find nothing's really changed but the address.......same wacky stuff as always, with a tune or two thrown in from time to time.
Did you manage to find all of the songs? The other day, there were 7 posted
and Tina collected all of the links into one post on Monday night. You might find her post helpful.
Here's the link to it: http://macca.paulmccartney.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=2048607&highlight=#2048607

Yoko send my a message via Facebook (I'll keep pretending those famous people really do that themselves
)
about an exhibition of John's work in Liverpool. Yoko says, "JOHN LENNON: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION OF ARTWORKS For the first time in their entirety in Liverpool. The Liverpool Daily Post and Echo offices Old Hall Street, Liverpool, L69 3EB, UK. 23 May 2008 - 2 June 2008. Mon-Fri, midday ? 8:00pm. Admission: free". Is it a coincidence they planned this at this time?
Well, I'll admit to not knowing all of the specifics of the upcoming events in Liverpool, but isn't it essentially celebrating Liverpool as a cultural center and it's impact on the arts? If so, I can see why Yoko would want John's work shown there and then. On the other hand, she also probably sees it as an opportunity to steal a bit of Paul's thunder.

Bjorn, what was that you were saying about being willing to try things that most people find gross? Check this out: http://www.trifter.com/Practical-Travel/World-Cuisine/Seven-of-the-Deadliest-Delicacies-Come-Dine-with-Death.84785 What's amazing to me, is that some of the foods on that page only have elements of toxicity, and that if even small traces of some of those toxins are left behind, it's curtains for the consumer. Even more amazing would be to know how it was discovered that things like cassava are perfectly fine to eat ONLY if ALL of the trace toxins are removed. I mean, how many people died before someone finally figured out that those foods are okay and safe to eat, but only if cleaned very well, prepared properly, etc.?

Okay, that's enough nonsense from me for one night.

Off to work I go.....but first a little Black Hole of Time...
NNNOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no black hole
I've take an afternoon off from work to clean (read get rid of the trash) from Sietske who is coming to sleep next monday
and as long as she isn't a little skinny acrobat who can jump over the things, I don't need a black hole now
Or Sietske.....................how lithe are you

Hell, she's young...just give her a blanket and a pillow and she can find her own spot...

I may be younger than you, at least I assume that
, but I did study using pen and paper too, very much so, I have BOXES of notepads from those years!! That is why my handwriting is too fast and also unreadable for most!
You have seen it on postcards!
Make it left-handed and then you'll be as scrawly as mine
Do kids type notes in class on laptops or digitally record lectures now days? Recording would be the ticket, a few people used portable cassette players to record class when I was at college, but not very often, those things ate batteries like candy. And NO it wasn't stone chisel on rock slabs
... it's the best thing to find in the morning when I have a minute to have a break at work!!
Why thank you, you're too kind

Very smart idea on the owners part. A parrot landed in my backyard hedge many years ago, I was looking out my kitchen window (without my glasses on) and couldn't figure out what the heck was on the top of the hedge (8 ft high hedge). At first I thought it was a chicken
: I walked out close enough to see it was a parrot, it wasn't the least bit afraid or upset so I grabbed a branch and climbed up on a picnic table bench and held the branch in front of the bird...and it stepped on to it
Now what the heck was I gonna do with a big gray parrott on a stick. I walked into my house carrying the bird and it didn't budge. (of course it wasn't a 'budgie' so it wouldn't have
. So now I'm in the kitchen with a large beaked creature on a stick and my corgi going berserk leaping up at it
: ...and the bird just sits there, cool as a cuke.
Okay methinks, now what??? I had a small bird cage in the basement from when I had a parakeet ("BP"...short for Blue Pecker
: )....so I commence to go down the stairs with the bird on the stick and the dog yapping at the top of the steps....the bird was unflappable. Wrestle the cage off the shelf with one hand, get the door open and realize that it's going to be a very tight squeeze to get this parrot into the cage....the parrot does not resist one bit. Now you have to picture a parrot on a little perch all scrunched down to fit in the cage
: By now it's fairly obvious that this is one helluva tame bird and someone is no doubt missing it. Sooo...I take the bird in my car and start cruising up and down my neighborhood streets at 7:00am. Just two streets over I spy a guy walking along staring up at the trees...AHA...no birdbrain here, I put it together.
I lean out my window and ask if he's lost a gray parrot....he lights up like a forty foot sparkler when I show him the cage. It was his wife's bird, he'd accidentally left the front door open and was in BIG trouble. I was his best friend in all the world at that moment
Hmm...in reading over this long drawn out "to make a long story longer" bit of blather I am struck by the thought that I may have already shared this story sometime in our distant past...if so....tough

YEAH. Norway qualified for the final of the Eurovision Song Contest!
But not Belgium and Netherlands... I'm sorry...
Don't be sorry. I didn't expect Belgium to get into the contest anyway
What a trip! On my way home from work the radio (NPR) was talking about the Belgian entry, they had the composer on and everything.
Apparently the lyrics are in a language he made up. They mentioned that the song was already out of the running.
I haven't even heard the song, to be honest. A language they made up? That's so not original...Belgium has second place a few years ago in the contest with a song with a language made up. I guess they were trying to get the same results now, but imitating doesn't seem to be that good now.
