In a Holy Ghost mood today. My brother and I used to love, love, love this gospel hit from 1981: The O'Neal Twins - Jesus Dropped The Charges
-
A little mo': Aretha Franklin and Mavis Staples - Oh Happy Day (live 1987):
-
In 1982, Rick James not only revived The Temptations' career as Platinum-selling artists, but he also brought together members of the vintage, '60s incarnation of the group with the '80s line-up. He produced a comeback/reunion album that resulted in one of the last, truly soulful and funky hits of r&b -- when r&b was still pure r&b: The Temptations & Rick James- Standing on the Top
-
Can't get enuff of this one: Tina Turner - Undercover Agent for the Blues (live @ Amsterdam 1996):

Some great links throughout Auds, you know I dig the funk! Was listening to this Nilsson track earlier today and though I think its predominantly a more bluey song, I was thinking how funky the interplay between his vocal and organ is. early in the mornin I can't do right...
funky, right? so simple, yet so amazing. Funk on! -

funky, right? so simple, yet so amazing. Funk on!You know what just became remarkably clear to me? How much you sound like Harry! The influence is crystal clear in that track! Wow! How did I miss it before???? And, yes, it is funky. The right bass-line and percussion would cement it.

Yeah he's a humungous influence on me musically. I have all kinds of weird sides to my tastes and he's very much in line with my way of thinking musically, he's done all kinds of songs and I'm sort of that way. and the funny thing is I was only introduced to him about 4 years ago, so more that being influenced I'd say we just have similarities in styles. but he's way better he's on the level with any of the greatest writers of all time IMO. he's just one of those guys though who really didn't appreciate his own abilitiy, and risked everything all the time. like it was all too easy for him that he didn't give it (or his voice) the care he should have. but its the artists perrogative and we're lucky as listeners to have crazy bastards like Harry out there doing it balls out. this is not a funk track (though perhaps slightly), but listen to this one howl! from the same album, called Down, you heard it?
guy was a complete maniac! yet could write like this too anyway, here's another track from an album I've been playing quite a bit lately, WAR, The World Is A Ghetto, their hit Cisco Kid. would you consider that funk? perhaps really heavy funk? whatever it is I like it. -

WAR is a lot like Earth, Wind & Fire -- multiple influences (Afro-Cuban, etc.). It's certainly funky enough but moreso straight-up r&b. But i'm not gonna quibble.
