no Nancy, I said the stolen 61 Hofner story was a perfect set up for My Brave Face which if you remember is a video about a super fan that has "collected" a bunch of Macca's property..He did not play it, but it would have been a great segue into it
Stolen at Twickenham 69, yeah? I believe Paul plays it in the film...but by the rooftop gig, he uses an alternate bass, presumably the Hofner he plays now. When he did the video for Coming Up, he used it for the first time in years...and it still had a Beatles setlist cellotaped to it! Wowee...
Stolen after the Revolution video was filmed.
Nope. Stolen during filming of Let It Be in 69. He's seen in the film playing it.
I read differently. Will have to recheck the film. I have it on my computer.

Scroll down on this page and there is a photo from Let It Be with Paul holding his first Hofner bass. http://www.talkbass.com/threads/paul-mccartney-and-his-basses.856808/

I've just been reviewing the rooftop performance, and they have yet to show the headstock to see if it is the '61 Hofner (written vertically)! But I concede it does look like the '61 otherwise. The book I read was obviously incorrect. The photo on that link is not showing up for me!

The rooftop (at Apple) features his 63 model. The earlier bass was used at earlier shoots at Twickenham...

Perhaps your wires are crossed as the clips for the Frost show and what turned out to be Let It Be were all shot at Twickenham. But the bass was nicked in 69...I have the film, saw it last night. He's clearly playing the earlier bass...

He is playing his earlier Hofner bass in the scene where they are all sitting and Paul gets into it with George about his playing.

Mmmm...maybe Hari Georgeson took it with him when he quit the band and walked out? KIDDING!

How did he make that sound? He's playing a grand piano!?

That piano is likely fitted with a synth piano/keyboard. Like his magic piano! They make them.

You think so? I was always under the impression he had a real grand piano onstage. Billy Joel has an electronic one fitted into a shell (so they could fit his teleprompter ) Paul's sounds more authentic. With Billy, you can clearly hear the electronic sound.

So glad to hear songs from this album... it's such a great album!

moptops, you're still confusing me. The rooftop was filmed at 3 Savile Row. Which bass was that? Looks like the '61 to me. Look at the pickup locations. I still haven't watched the whole video (no time!) so I could be wrong. Twickenham was earlier in the month though and if it was nicked then, he'd be playing the '63 on the rooftop.

Well, when he played the intro to New, it is clearly a synth. So I can't think of anything else, unless he sent the acoustic piano signal into some sort of processor just for that song.

Sorry a bit late with this....had a bunch of reports and photos to send out and then of course I've gotten sick from standing out in the elements, but heck, It was way worth it! Here's my report:
Bob, Thanks for the report. hope you're feeling better.

I thought so. You might be right. I DO KNOW his 61 bass was stolen at Twickenham 69. I'd love to know where it is now.

Paul's grand piano is definitely "real"...he has a piano tuner as part of his tour entourage.

I finally saw a clear screen shot of the rooftop and it is the '63 with Hofner written horizontally. He may have changed the pickups later. So the '61 was stolen earlier at Twickenham.

That's because the grand piano he uses on stage at his concerts are real, acoustic pianos. But clearly, at the beginning of New at Irving Plaza, it is not a grand piano sound he is getting from that instrument. It's a mystery to me.

Unless it was actually Wix playing that part?
