I just saw this news and was shocked. A sudden death from a massive heart attack at 66 is shocking and sad. Maybe we'll find out later if he'd had previous heart problems. I was never really a Monkees fan, never bought their records, but of course I did see their TV show sometimes. I had just started high school in '66 and was a massive and loyal Beatle fan. The Monkees couldn't compete with the amazing and experimental Revolver album, or Davy with Paul. They were for younger kids. Still this makes me sad, both for his family and fans. Does everyone know this bit of trivia? On February 9, 1964, when most Americans saw The Beatles for the first time on Ed Sullivan, they also saw Davy Jones. The Broadway cast of Oliver was featured on that show, and Davy was playing the Artful Dodger. I have the DVD set and just the other day was watching the Beatles' performances. I'll have to go watch Davy now.

Davy Jones of the Monkees has died of an apparent heart attack aged 66. The singer had been on a solo tour this month and had complained of chest pains the previous evening and was admitted to a hospital in Stuart Florida. Jones was born in Manchester, England and started acting as a child, though he got his big break in 1965 when he joined The Monkees. The group had a hugely successful television series, and a slew of hit songs in the late 1960s. At their peak in 1967 they sold more records than the Beatles. http//www.thisdayinmusic.com/pages/davy_jones

That's sad. The Monkees made some great songs, "I'm A Believer", "Daydream Believer", "Last Train To Clarksville" and "Pleasant Valley Sunday".

NNNNNoooooooooo! Oh my goodness, I love Davy Jones! My mom is going to be SO upset by this news... And here we had tickets to one of the shows they cancelled of their summer tour...we were going to be able to meet the Monkees with the VIP passes I bought, as I wanted to make my mom's dream of meeting Davy Jones come true...

from michael nesmith on FB All the lovely people. Where do they all come from? So many lovely and heartfelt messages of condolence and sympathy, I don?t know what to say, except my sincere thank you to all. I share and appreciate your feelings. But let?s not get ahead of ourselves here. While it is jarring, and sometimes seems unjust, or ...strange, this transition we call dying and death is a constant in the mortal experience that we know almost nothing about. I am of the mind that it is a transition and I carry with me a certainty of the continuity of existence. While I don?t exactly know what happens in these times, there is an ongoing sense of life that reaches in my mind out far beyond the near horizons of mortality and into the reaches of infinity. That David has stepped beyond my view causes me the sadness that it does many of you. I will miss him, but I won?t abandon him to mortality. I will think of him as existing within the animating life that insures existence. I will think of him and his family with that gentle regard in spite of all the contrary appearances on the mortal plane. David?s spirit and soul live well in my heart, among all the lovely people, who remember with me the good times, and the healing times, that were created for so many, including us. I have fond memories. I wish him safe travels.
