Sam's Tribute to George Hi Everyone. A few words for my friend George. George....my friend. George Harrison was a giant...even though all his life he tried so hard to be an ordinary mortal. At the peak of The Beatles fame he always referred to himself as the `coach class Beatle.' He failed to convince me of that as I'd known him since those early days in Liverpool when we all set out on our `Yellow Brick Road.' John and Paul dominated The Beatles because of their competitive spirit and over whelming talent whilst their `junior' partner George was content to do whatever they wanted, when they wanted and how they wanted. Yet without his input, would they still have been as successful? I think not !! George was the supreme collaborator, working with and encouraging not just his Beatle mates but in later years his new contemporaries in The Travelling Wilburys. Happily, he worked behind the scenes, reluctant to thrust himself forward into the despised spotlight of fame. Yet, when the inevitable happened and the Fabs split his talent took control and swept him, albeit a little reluctantly, to the top of the charts with My Sweet Lord. Cream always rises to the top !! George went from strength to strength, proving what I'd always known. He was cool. His Concert for Bangladesh was the forerunner for Live Aid and all the other Charity Rock shows that followed. He went into films, three of which, `The Life Of Brian, 'Monty Python & The Holy Grail' and `Long Good Friday' are in my favourite `Top Ten.' and probably yours !! Then, at least in my opinion, came his best collaboration, his work with The Travelling Wilburys. That creative 12 month period made Roy Orbison's last year on Earth a very happy one. George brought light and joy into every room or setting he appeared in. His genteel manner proved that you don't have to be a rabble-rouser to be a Rock icon. His quiet ways were an example to us all and although he claims he was a lapsed Catholic he was very Christ-like in his appearance and bearing. He brought sheer class to everything he undertook. Even his beloved gardens have a unique style tended by his loving hands. Now, in his final album `Brainwashed' he has left a legacy that may well prove to be his best work of all. Typical of George he'll rise to the top once more. His was a tremendous talent that will live long in our memories and in Posterity, which no doubt would bring a rueful grin to his face. I was privileged to know him. Now his remains flow peacefully along The Holy River Ganges. A fitting end for a gentle man of peace and tranquillity. Sam Leach. Liverpool November 26 2003.

That was lovely. And yes, those films are on my favorite list as well.
-
Thanks Lisa. (Magical Mystery Girl). George had a much bigger impact on us all than even he realised. Love and hugs. Sam.

Yes... He seemed to be a humble man, one with much inner peace. A very respectable human being. I never knew him but through his music, he gave off much of that vibe altogether. A very humble lead guitarist which I favour greatly.

Sam, That was a great one. yes George was very talented and I didn't realize it until a few years before his death. I always favored Paul and then John and I think back in the late 90s I bought The Best OF George Harrison and love the song What IS Life. My parents like My Sweet Lord. While My Guitar Gently weeps is the reason I bought the White Album. I still need to get All Those years Ago and When We Was Fab. I miss George too. I'm glad that we still have his music and that the Anthology was doen while he was still here with us and that him and Paul made up before he passed away.
-
Thanks Giri (Paulfan). I agree with everything you said. Cheers Sam.
-
Through music, a brilliant artist is immortal. This goes for George.
-
Great to see you writing this Sam. It's love. In the Let It Be sessions after some discussions George left the band. John said "No problem, if he's not back on Sunday we'll call Eric (Eric Clapton)". On Sunday George was not back. As you may guess they didn't call Eric.

That was a beautiful post Sam! I finally watched the tribute to George DVD. George would of loved all his friends there. Paul seemed very respectful, staying in the background and also a little sad. Great performances of George's songs. Terribly miss George
-
Hi Dianna (Dmmedic) & Oliver. Like me you both miss George terribly. The Beatles wouldn't have made it without him. A much missed Man !! Love and hugs Sam.
-
He lives on through his beautiful music that speaks to us all.
-
Sam, beautiful words for George. Thank you for sharing it with us. Thank you George for adding beauty to the world.
-
Thank you Denny C. George left us a huge legacy in his music and the importance of gentility. So many Rock `Stars' today would do well to emulate him. Cheers Sam.
-
Sam, have you ever had the pleasure of meeting Klaus Voormann? Just finished reading his book and it's just so amazing! This guy really loves the Beatles and what's quite special he loves them all though it seems he was particularly close to George!
-
Hi Calicosky Yes I was a guest with him at Beatlefests in Chicago and New York. He a real nice guy who impressed all those who met him. And very witty too. Nice to hear from you again. Visit us more often. Love and hugs Sam.
-
Sam, Thank you for those beautiful words about George. I will light a candle and think of him this Saturday. Cheers, ~Tashi

You're welcome Sam. Sorry to ask again but what was John insecure about? His looks, his masculinity?
-
HI\i Paulfan. Nothing in particular. He sometimes wasn't as confident in his own ability as he pretended to be. Teenagers and younger people always have these doubts about themselves. It's only when they get older they see their fears and doubts were groundless. Cheers Sam.
