I have a question for anyone who knows in the song Across the Universe John says something like Ja Guru Dev Om, may have spelled that wrong, does anyone know what it means?
It is a mantra, Starr. Now, I do not know whether that was one that Maharashi gave him or what. ...... or maybe John was passing by and heard The Guru saying to Mia Farrow " jai guru dev on " ...that meant : - " I want to sleep on your bed tonite "
You never know...You never know, cbimbi....

Hi Sam #3 (Samcat). Thanks for boosting my site. It's keeping us way ahead. I think we should make our votes for Saturday after 5.15pm Eastern if possible so we can get a good start for the next time period. Maccascruff Thanks for voting. BTW I don't have your first name. Kathy Some people have many silly prejudices but just for being left handed is the worst, and funniest, I've ever heard off. Paulfan Years ago older generations often had a `down' on younger people but nowadays that's not so acute. And that's mainly thanks to The Beatles. Tashi (Stylegurrl) I can't believe how cold it iis up in the North East, Make sure you keep indoors and wrapped up. And always remeber to have blankets and hot water bottles in your car...just in case. Back later. Cheers Sam.

Working Class Hero- by John Lennon As soon as you're born they make you feel small By giving you no time instead of it all Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be They hurt you at home and they hit you at school They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool Till you're so ------- crazy you can't follow their rules A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be When they've tortured and scared you for twenty odd years Then they expect you to pick a career When you can't really function you're so full of fear A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV And you think you're so clever and classless and free But you're still ------- peasants as far as I can see A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be There's room at the top they are telling you still But first you must learn how to smile as you kill If you want to be like the folks on the hill A working class hero is something to be A working class hero is something to be If you want to be a hero well just follow me If you want to be a hero well just follow me
John's talking about himself. And The Beatles ("those folks on the hill") He talk that he comes from working class and that he "choose/tried" to be a hero and rebel against his fate, not comforting at "dopes of the establishment" "Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV" "There's room at the top they are telling you still But first you must learn how to smile as you kill If you want to be like the folks on the hill" That's when he was the leader of the Beatles to the top. And finally if you want to do the same... just follow John Lennon.
-
No Oliver. You've got it wrong !! Firstly, John wasn't true `working class' (I hate that expression) he was brought up more middle class. Ringo would be `working class'. The `folks on the hill' were NOT The Beatles. They are the politicians on Washington's `Nob Hill' which is an area where most of the powerful senators who control our lives, used to live. And `Smile as you kill' is an Anti-War comment. Obviously hid earlier verses of the song do refer to his school life. And they were so true inm the era of our childhoods. Some elders were always putting younger people down. Cheers. Sam.
-
Hi again Oliver. I meant to also tell you that `They' that John refers to are of course... ...The Establishment. Those `men if grey suits' who control us all to help keep `THEM' in the style to which they're accustomed. When people start getting `ahead' thinking they're `so classless and free' in reality they're helping the Establishment to keep their cosy little `Status Quo'. Cheers. Sam.

Hi Sam, What did the older people look down on younger people for? I'm feeling sad now because one of my faovrite people at work quit. She is a real nice girl and she is having a baby soon so she quit so she can spend more time with the baby. have you seen the movie That THing You Do? It was based on her uncle's band and her uncle even met the Beatles before and met Mick Jagger and got to hang out with him. Anyway I'd like to know why elder people looked down on the young. Forgive me I'm feeling so sad now,I worked with ehr for 5 years.

Oh, yea, but, my dad is younger than Paul, but he was still hit...why wasn't Paul? I'm just curious....But, then again, left handed is still not the best thing, especially when your out looking for bass guitars and stuff like that. It's still not easy for me when it came to that.
Thanks to the Beatles, some people actually take me seriously....okay, not so much.
I hope you have a good afternoon, Sam.
Or evening...

Hi Paulfan When I was young most adults expected children to be seen but not heard. Physical chastisement was usual, parents giving the belt or Teachers throwing chalk at you or making liberal use of the cane. My Parents weren't like that but many were. Today that sort of punishment is frowned upon. On the other side of the coin we have Schoolchildren going wild nowadays. So a middle road should be our goal. The Beatles did much to advance the cause of Teenagers. Cheers Sam.

Hi Sam, I've heard that saying beofre about children are to be seen and not to be heard. I think that goes a little too far. My grandparents were pretty much that way with my parents and my grandfather who passed away last July used to get mad at my dad for arguiin with adults. My grandparents didn't like children arguiing with adults and my dad used to get in trouble for it. I myself have talked back to my parents alot and my mom says I never talked to my mom the way you do! I also got told I have no respect for my parents before too. I also got told once that elders can tell me what to do but I can't tell them what to do. At times I felt it was kind of unfair and was afriad of winding up behaving like that if I have children because I feel I haven't been as good as my aprents expected me to be. I was pretty good as a kid but I grew a beard when my aprents didn't like it. They also didn't want me to grow my hair long like John's. My parents were not as strict as soem others but I feel I have disappointed them by doing things they didn't approve of. Soeaking of throwing chalk there was a teacher in my middle school who used to throw chalk. I also had a teacher who used to get on me about yawning in class and he didn't like the word mad because only dogfs get mad but people get angry. He also got offended when people asked him if eh had kids because he thought kids were baby goats and he liked the word children instead. he was a nutcase I thought privately and I still think so. By liveral use of the cane do you mean they used it just for the sake of punishing kids? I feel these days children bring uns to schoola dn there are school shottings. yes we ahve to be middle of the road because back in the 50s it was too strict these days it is too liberal.
-
Hi Kathy Here in the UK we don't see anything unusual about lefties. In fact left footed soccer players are much sought after by coaches, BTW your cheque for the book came today...thanks loads. Love and hugs. Sam.
-
Yes Paulfan. Some teachers LOVED to give the cane. If I ever saw a teacher reading about the Marquis De Sade, I'd make ceratin that I didn't upset him, heh, heh. Things are better today though and most teachers are fine. Cheers. Sam.
-
Hi Tashi Okay then make sure you keep warm and cozy. Love and hugs. Sam.
-
Sam, IT seems that they punished for the sake of it. My grandmother sued to love to scold and she scolded my mother in front of everyone once. My grandmother refferring to my father's mother. I'm glad teachers are fien today but I bet there are still some like the old ones. My boss is pretty good too. I'm atill feeling sad about the girl from work leaving because she was so nice and funny. I hope in time I'll feel better.
-
Hi Paulfan. I hope you told her you'll miss her so badly. Life is like that though. Just keep ploughing on there are plenty more nice people that you'll meet. Cheers. Sam.

I got it wrong! Anyway very "strong" lyrics from John. A very interesting point is whether you don't agree with establishment you need it in some way or another. When John and the Beatles were on top they had their dose of "dope" of success, contributing to the "Status Quo" too. It's a... figure of eight??? There's no way out.
