So, do you know which Monkee had the solo top forty hit yet and what it was? Dont know Samuel, but the song is that ... " standin in the lonely light of the siiilver moooonnnn " ........ isnt it ?

cbimbi:
Hi, Samuel this great joke of Monkees been better musicians than the Beatles are really funny we could start a new forum on this re the musicians corner there are very good songs and musicians there and I began to understood that my songs are more for " bathroom " than garage bands heh heh maybe even the " smell " ops:
Hello, cbimbi: John was an average guitar player who could play a fair piano. George was a very talented guitarist. Both wrote some pretty darn good songs. Tork and Nesmith were the musicians of the Monkees and musically, they can match up well with anything John or George could do. Tork falls short in the songwriting department, but Nesmith was very innovative with his sound and talent. Ringo and Dolenz were both good drummers, and although I would give the edge to Ringo (John once quipped that Ringo was the second best drummer in the Beatles). Dolenz actually could play a few more instruments and wrote a few tunes, more than Ringo did during his time with the Beatles. Of course, no once can compare with Paul's ability pure and simple with either composition or playing. It is that simple. Best, Sam C.

No, but it did come out in the late 60s early 70s.

Starr, You are awesome! That is correct! Of course, which song did Mike Nesmith write that was sung by someone else that became a big star in the 70s? Best, Sam C.

Hey Samuel well i do know my Monkees i just don't know much about Mike Nesmith's solo career, i know he wrote the song Different Drum for Linda Ronstad that was quite popular in the late 60's but don't know about the 70's, i've always followed Davy's career the most out of all of them but i do know some about Micky and Peter as well, just never followed Mike as much!! Davy's my main man!! ops:

Samuel, Samw was just teasing me because we were talking about the Beatles and the Monkees and how the Monkees can't do everything the Beatles can do like Sara said. Even maccascruff said she saw the Monkees in concert and they couldn't compare to the beatles and she was afraid that Monkees fans would get upset with her and I told her that she is entitled to ehr opinion and nobody here would get upset with ehr and Sam said the opinon was 99.99 percent of the people's opinion. I told Sam he was correct and that is why he was teasing me and siad I was just being nice to him. I teased him back adn told him I'm being like Paul and being a diplomat. That is how it started.

Monkees vs The Beatles ?????? Is this a joke ???? Maybe I'm not as appreciative of the Monkees as I should be, although I did enjoy them for a short while....but please. Think about it !! Even if they came near to John, George and Ringo as individual musicians as a unit they couldn't even carry the Fabs guitar cases into a show. There isn't a band who can manage to clamber onto the same planet as The Beatles. If it came to the top ten bands of all time would the Monkees be there ?? I just can't see it !! Am I getting too old ?? Have I missed something ?? I honestly doubt that. BTW I'm not attacking Samcat or Starr's opinion. I really can't agree !! I'd better get back to bed. Cheers Sam. Hello Starr, Once again you have it correct. Different Drum was the correct answer. Now a softball question. Which song did the Monkees record that was inspired while they were in England? Best, Sam C.

Sam, I have no problem with you not agreeing; however, the Monkees outsold the Beatles from 1966 to 1968. There is no doubt in my mind that the Beatles were the best band selling wise, musically wise, but for a few short years,The Monkees albums outsold the Beatles albums. They were that hot. Does any of their albums compare musically to Pepper or Abbey Road? No. Also their solo careers do not match up to the Beatles either. Then again, I believe Brian Wilson was just as talented if not more so than any of the Beatles. NHO, that is. Cheers! Sam C.

Monkees vs Beatles; They both are on the same planet (Earth) - No seriously they both have that Hey & Yeah but the Beatles are just better in my mind songs like Love Me Do, Imagine, Yesterday and Strawberry Fields Forever stick in my mind because the Beatles touch peoples hearts in so many ways and continue to do so. The Monkees we're more like polished Tv production sort of like the Partridge Family they we're good shows to watch but when I was young I would buy the Beatles records because I felt that the Beatles music is better - besides, I could watch the Monkees on TV. dB

Hello, Sam is still in first place, but only by one vote! Please vote often and legally! Let us have Sam number one again Cheers, Sam C.

He's up by two votes now.

The Beatles versus the Monkees -- now that's a tough comparison. I think when the Beatles stopped touring and spent more time in the studio and became very inventive their work certainly matched the Monkees or came close. But, it's tough to argue that songs like Yesterday are as good as say I am a Believer. If I recall I thought Macca once said that the Monkees inspired them to write Sgt. Pepper. Of course, just kidding!
-
Yes! I'm A Believer is a fantastic song the problem with me is that I live in Australia and mostly only seen the Monkees on Tv series (it was very popular) - Australia's Music Industry is very small compared to England and the USA being dominate over Australia's own such as the Easy-Beats, and The Seekers here in Aust' we got swamped by USA comericalism Tv and I feel that the Monkees had that advantage over the Beatles, so!! I say the Beatles stood up extremely well considering. dB
-
I know one Beatle who didn't think much of the Monkees -- George Harrison, i recall at the time of the lawsuit when there was bitterness -- Harrison scornfully compared Macca's solo work to the Monkees -- it's in one of my interview Beatle books.
-
Mike, Samcat & Sara. I can't believe that you all can actually mention the Monkees in the same breath or even sentence as the Beatles. I can understand that subconciously you all think the Monkees are fit to compare with the Beatles as they were `manufactured' to be America's answer to the Fabs. But come on...be serious. They didn't have any songs to be worthy of 100 of The Beatles stuff. They were `made' by executives just to generate money. They didn't `make their bones' musically speaking around clubs, ballrooms and bars as The Beatles and others did. I can name many other bands that were far superior to The Monkees and yet couldn't come near The Beatles. What gives here ?? Are you going to tell me that the Monkees were better than. The Stones, The Who, Pink Floyd, The Animals, Manfred Mann, The Kinks, Duran Duran, Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, The Beach Boys, the Byrds, The Band, Grateful Dead, Fleetwood Mac, The Searchers and even Dave Clark Five. And I've left loads more out. Every one of those bands I've named above had style and character and were worthy of contributing to Rock'n'Roll's glorious past. They were genuine artistes and not just a money-making gimmick dreamt up by the `men in suits'. Yet they fade in comparison to The Beatles. I think you should all take another look at the Beatles catalogue and legacy. And then add to that their solo work. And personalities !! In my opinion the Monkees are just a footnote in musical history. And a light-hearted one at that !! But I respect your beliefs even though I may appear to have been quite strong in mine. Don't be too upset with me, heh, heh. Cheers all. Sam.
