Sam No question, it's all opinion, no right or wrong. In terms of Macca I personally liked just about everything he did as a solo artist. The albums I mentioned post Venues and Mars -- Flaming Pie, Tug of War -- are the 2 albums that music critics love or hate Macca consider to be classics -- even old Rolling Stone gave Tug of War -- 5 stars out of 5. With both albums, the critics that didn't care much for his solo work basically said -- see Macca can still do it if he wants to so why doesn't he do it with his other work, etc. Ironically, those aren't my favorite albums of his. Just my opinion but I found Calico Skies mixed in very nicely with his Beatle songs in his European tour. Somedays compares I think too as a nice ballad that compares to stuff like Blackbird. My Brave Face -- could mix nicely as a Beatle single Listen to Take It Away and then Penny Lane -- very similar sounding pop songs. Rinse the Raindrops -- Helter Skelter? No More Lonley Nights -- I think would make the cut as a Beatles single. Ballads galore: Wanderlust, We Got Married, Waterfalls, With a Little Luck, Mull of Kyntre, Sonedays, Loving Flame, etc -- I think easily would make any Beatle album. Now Sam would be the first tell me that the sum of the parts of the Beatles were worth much more than what they were worth seperately -- I agree with that. However, I actually got into Macca's solo stuff first -- so maybe it was easier for me to move from Macca's music first and then discover the Beatles. But, to each their own. Personally, as someone who was always more familair with Macca's solo work then the Beatles -- with me I'd listen to a song like This One or My Brave Face and then others would tell me they are all right but not as good as the Beatles -- then I'd listen to a Beatles album for the first time like Abbey Road and say this sounds great -- but I'd be puzzled becuase to me a song like My Brave Face I think fits in fine next to peers like Oh Darling or Rinse the Raindrops compares fine to She's So Heavy. If you stuck My Brave Face on Abbey Road -- I don't thinnk people would say what is this bs next to all these classics. My point is that I believe that My Brave Face would be a classic if it was released under the Beatles -- because to paraphrase George Harrison's line from All Those Years Ago -- the Beatles were the period in time when everyone was listening to them so that era is going to have the most cache for each individual Beatle. It's more complex than that of course -- it definitely was the most prolific time but I don't think Macca lost his touch after the Beatles -- I think he lost his ability to do a ton of smash songs at once but I think he retained his ability to crank out a few great ones a year that were worthy of his Beatle period. He never wrote another Yesterday or Hey Jude -- but Maybe I am Amazed came close. If a song like Take It Away was released during the Beatles era would it have become a classic -- it may sound silly -- but my view is yes! It wouldn't be on par with a Hey Jude but would it have been a classic on par with a song like Paperback Writer or Drive My care -- I think yes. Just my opinion, though.
Hi Mike, I think the further away Paul was from the Beatles, the less the Beatle he was in term of music. I felt that Live And Let Die was incredibly Beatlish. Of course, IMHO, the most Beatlish song released by any of the former four was Photograph which I believe really captures the Beatle spirit. Although My Love was lovely, I did not rank it very high. I liked Hi Hi Hi better. McCartney and Ram are just as forgotten as albums of not great note, and Red Rose Speedway was better, and Band On the Run was a fine album, but Venus and Mars has to be my favourite. The Speed Of Sound did nothing to me, other than proved that Paul could move with the times. I did not care much for Tug Of War, and some of the later albums. I did purchase his last two, and really was not impressed with them either. It was pleasant to listen to both of the last CDs, but the music did not excite me as it did in the past. With A Little Luck reminded me of a disco song, and not a very good one at that comparing it to some of the disco songs out there at the time. I will grant you that Mull of Kintire was a great tune and matched up to anything he did as a Beatle. When George Martin would produce some of Paul's music, you would hear the faint echoes of Beatle past, but I really believe that John was right in that you can not go back to school. Of course, this is all my opinion, and I have no problems with people who feel that Paul's current stuff is the best he has ever done. He is always worth a listen, and I do not think my money is ill spent by purchasing one of his current CDs. He still does quite well. Thanks for allowing me to ramble, Mike Best to my fello Floridian! Sam C

Hi Mike. Tug of War is my favourite and the best track is `Wanderlust.' I once asked Paul to release Wanderlust as a single and he disagreed. I reminded him he said that when I advised him to do `Twist and Shout'. He winced...and replied. "Will you ever let me forget that?" Cheers Sam.

Hi Cesar. Thanks for that kind comment about my book. I of course wrote about the `feel' of The Beatles and Rock'n'Roll. Ian wrote about why The Beatles wrote what they did and the behind the scenes stuff. Truly a `must read' for all Beatle fans. Cheers. Sam.

Hi everyone, "McCartney" can't possibly be dismissed. It has Maybe I'm Amazed, Everynight and Junk on it. Those are some of the best songs ever written, beatlish or not.

Sam, That is too funny. Was there any more to that story? Cheers, Sam C.

Hello everyone, It's so much fun reading everyone's opinions on the music that we all enjoy. That's one of the things I love about this board---when the discussions and opinions are flying but everyone gets along and is respectful of the others. Oh boy, I missed the discussion about the M group. Fun TV show, enjoyable music but compared to the Beatles? No way. I once saw Davy Jones in a fish and chip shop in LA years ago. No body guards, no entourage and it was right after the height of their fame. Not a screaming fan in sight. Interesting... Have a wonderful day, gang. Hugs, Jennifer

Hello Denny, I never cared too much for any of those tunes, but Another Day was a lovely tune which came out about that time. Best, Sam C.

Hello Jennifer, Did you say anything to him? Best, Sam C.
Hi Sam C, No, I rarely approach famous people because I never know what to say without sounding like an idiot. But it was a little restaurant, not at all fancy and he sat there with his friend and ate his fish and chips just like the rest of us. There weren't very many other people there and I don't think anyone else really noticed that he was there. Of course, that may be due to the fact that celebrity sightings are really common in LA... I still wish it had been a Beatle though! Then, I definitely would have said something...and probably still would have sounded like an idiot but it would have been worth it! Hugs, Jennifer

Hi Sam #3 (Samcat). Thanks yet again for that nice comment but I'm honoured also. The story about Paul and Twist and Shout'went like this. March 1963 Empire Theatre Liverpool. I was chatting with Eppy and Paul and `Please Please Me ' had been their first big hit soon to be followed by `From Me To You'. I suggested that `Twist and Shout' would make them internationally famous and should be released as a single...and quickly. Eppy smiled patronisedly and said "Sam it's just not commercial enough." Paul looked a little embarrassed and shrugged non-commitedly. Brian Poole heard it on their album `Please, Please Me' and had a hit with it. Later that year, in July, The Beatles rushed out an EP which reached #2 on the singles charts. That feat has never been equalled. What did Eppy know ?? Cheers. Sam.

Hi Denny C. Absolutely spot on. Those three were brilliant especially `Baby I'm Amazed' which is my fave Macca song. I've been wondering where you'd got to. Cheers Sam.

Hi Jen Your posters went out yesterday...at long last. I'd been waiting for the tubes to arrive. Let me know when they drop through your letter box. Love and hugs. Sam.
