Hi Paulfan: I think some do consider Macca to be Lennon's equal and over time he might make strides in that department. I would say that Macca certainly has has legions of fans. I wouldn't say that Macca is the average fan's least favorite Beatle. He seems to win most of the survey's via Beatle fans when they are asked to pick their favorite Beatle -- including a recent survey here done by an oldie radio station in FL. Macca won by a mile. I think Macca is most music magazines favorite target among the Beatles but that's changing, too. So, didn't imply with that email that things look bleak for Macca. My point really is that Lennon has pretty much the perch as the top Beatle at the moment. And, most everything that the average person sees around them which is driven by the media --Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, music magazine picking best artists, polls, etc -- says that Lennon is on top. I don't hold any ill will to Lennon's rep but personally I don't think that the media does much to bolster Macca in terms of being his equal. As you know, it's frustrating to me becuase listening to both of their music it's beyond absurd to me that anyone can come to that conclusion. But, I think you are right -- most of the disparity between the two centers on the two different images -- no question in my mind that the media and rock critics gravitate towards Lennon's image of the rock and roll politically driven rebel. Cheers! Mike
Hi Mike, I agree with you that Lennon is seen as the top Beatle from usic critics and magazine and the Rock N'Roll Hall Of Fame. I find it funny that the rebel image is considred cool by the critics. As Paul said in the interview with Chrissie Hynde when talking about his pot bust that people like a loser. I don't have anything against Lennon being on top or being other people's favorite Beatle but when it is at the expense of Macca I have a problem with it. It would be nice if the media bolster Macca's reputation while he is still alive to Lennon's equal. As Sam said because of John's death he has been elevated to iconic status. People don't like to speak ill of the dead. I would hope that critics and the media will coem around while Paul is still alive and bolster him up some more. Paul has been around longer and has more songs to his credit. Who knwos maybe after he goes he might get better recognition because of his wider catalog.

Hi Vinny This is exciting news and the Royal letter heading of Buckingham Palace is really beautiful. And it looks great to see my name on the Queen's letter heading. I still doubt that it will happen as I'm quite sure Tony Blair wouldn't consider me worthy compared to other more deserving people ...but you never know. I will send Tony a copy of my book though. Just in case he has a brainstorm, heh, heh. I don't think for a moment anyone thought you were a nut or a liar. You're more a Don Quixote tilting at the impossible dream. And sometimes those dreams come true. Whatever happens thank you for your nice thoughts which I appreciate very much. Love to you and Mel. Cheers Sam.

Hi Paulfan Agree. If I had to sum up my observation -- Macca is considered very highly among big Beatle fans and inside Beatle critics. He fares very poorly relative to Lennon among average music fans who aren't per se big Beatle fans and music critics who aren't per se insider Beatle people. That's why as said I think Liverpool's Lennon dominated monuments I think has some impact to further the discrepancy with music fans who are not sophisticated enough to value Macca and most hear about Lennon's eminence so to them in my view the city just backs up what to them is a truism alas yeah Liverpool of course honors their favorite son -- the other Beatles were good but weren't Lennon, etc. I've heard Macca say in an interview years back that he's tired of reading every now and then rock critics saying that the Beatles were about Lennon and the others were his backing band. The only reason really why I harp on this point is in different forms and different fashions Macca does pick up on this stuff and its clear that it does bother him. As stated, in another post, one of the guys who produced the Beatles Anthology said in an interview that with the program he hoped will help Macca by talking about his contribution to the Beatles and he needed that. He said working with Macca it was clear to him that Macca was very aware that most of the public looks as Lennon as the guy and assume that he was the bigger song writer. Cheers! Mike

Sam is up by 36 votes this morning. Cliff Richard was never big that I knew of here in the US. I don't think I've ever heard of anything he did. Paul certainly deserves more respect, even in Liverpool. It was exciting to sit in the Paul McCartney Auditorium at LIPA and to find the chair with my name on it, even if the play was so bad we left!

Im a musician and songwriter and if people get upset at what im going to say well tough titties . Paul Mccartney was a superior songwriter to John. I have been clasically trained since the age of 7, and Pauls actual credited melodies changes , harmonic usages of voice and writing are in those days 20 years ahead of John.. Vince.

Well said Vinny I think many on this thread, especially Mike, Paulfan and Tashi, agree that Paul had far more musical ability and creativity than John. And John himself often said as much. I suppose some people who write about the Beatles like to find an edge along the lines of moodyiness or look for items that have a rebellious edge verging on John's sardonic side. Sometimes being a little negative sells more papers....what can you do ?? Cheers Sam.

Hi Swaying Daisy Nice to hear from you again and your comments on my writing. Hello Sam C, Maccascruff, Starr and Jen Thanks for bumping us up...and your votes. Love and hugs everyone. Sam xx

Good afternoon to everyone, I am playing George's songs today in honor of his birthday. God bless you Goorge. You will be missed Sam and SamC, thanks for the info on Cliff Richard. I will try to get my hands on some of his music and give it a listen. Mike, great posts as always. I really wish more people would take heed of what you are saying. To me, honoring someone after they are dead is often useless . If you really care for someone, you let them know while they are alive. It irks me that George is now a brillant talent as far as the public is concerned. To me he was always one. There was an interesting article in a British paper a few days ago which discussed the public's neeed to grieve for dead celebrities. If I can find it I will post it here. Vincejohn, it was great of you to write the Queen on behalf of Sam I agree with your statment about Paul 100%. Sara, I agree with your comments as well. There is a great line form a song (by Joni Mitchell I think) which goes 'you don't know what you've got 'till it's gone' That sums it up for me. Love and hugs, ~Tashi

Hi Tashi That's an interesting article which I read yesterday over here. And I think they have a partial point. Some people like to be seen mourning. But there are many others who do grieve genuinely. No one should ever generalise like that. To each his own. Love and hugs. Sam.

Hello Sam, You are absolutely right. There are people who are genuine and no one should generalize. My point was, that there are people who couldn't care less about someone while they are living, but make a big show out of grieving for them after they are dead. Linda is a great example of this. When alive, she was terribly maligned and disrespected by fans and media alike. Once she passed away she became an "angel" the "love of Paul's life' and a "talented photographer". Now her memory is even used as a weapon to beat Heather (and Paul) with. It all comes across as fake to me. The "grief" that these people are showing over her passing is calculated and has no noble purpose. Sorry to rant but that kind of gets my goat.. Love and hugs, ~Tashi

I made Sam up by 29! Kat, no I didn't take it. A friend of mine did. She kept holding up a sign that said Sir Paul in St. Paul and it was all over the screen. She spent a lot of time in the UK and was at three of the four London shows and I saw her sign on the screen at all three shows.
That's amazing! Your friend is very good at taking pictures! That's funny, though. Hi Sam...it's been a long time, eh? I mean, there goes three days and no sign of me...had some of you worried, eh?

Hi Kathy We knew you'd be back. Schoolwork causes these temporary AWOL's Love and hugs. Sam

I see what you are sayign Mike. People act like Lennon was the Beatles and the other three follow him. I don't blame Macca for being tired of them acting like he isn't Lennon's equal. They even act like his contribution to the Beatles was too snetimental. I have a Life magazine which talks about how Yesterday,Michelle and Eleanor Rigby sound hopelessly mushy but when John Lennon dominates it is timelss or something like that. IT talks about How Strawberry Fields Forever,I Am The Walrus and Lucy In The Sky With Daimonds are timelss and Macc's Beatles work is mushy. Paul has also beena ccused by the critics of being too sentimental. I evens ee websites which say Paul can't hold a cadnle to John or that John was the true genius of the Beatles. WHen Macca dies he will get praised more. But by me he will get praised while he is still here with us. I even liked Linda when she was still here.
