Wow! Hello! (what's Hello in Turkish?)
-
Unfortunately, my Turkish is limited to one sentence: Grilla yapmak yasaktir. (hopefully, I'm remembering this right...) It means: No barbecue allowed. Maybe you could teach us some things?
-
Exactly! What's Turkish for "You're father must be a thief - he stole the stars and put them in your eyes!" :
-
Or just plain: Hello! My name is... or How are you?
-
Or something more casual like Gimme a break! I've got a cold turkey!?
-
Or something you could use when on vacation: Very beautiful, but we don't need this.
-
Exactly! "I like this fake diamond ring, but don't you think $200 is a bit too expensive?"
-
Actually, Harald Schmidt, a German comedian, did this once on his show. A Turkish member of his production crew taught him senteces like: "Wow, 100 Euros for a Rolex? That's cheap!" or "Those are all your brothers? Impressive!" But maybe we shouldn't upset giss'm becaue then she won't teach us anything and I really want to know some Turkish.
-
well ı'll teach you but you wont make fun of turkish..ok? lets start hello=merhaba how are you?=nasılsın my name is giss'm=adım giss'm is it enough for today?
-
Yes! Very nice! If only this board had some audio attached so we would know how to pronounce it. Well, at least it will be entertaining for the Turks...
-
Merhaba! Nasılsın!? Adım Pawel! (how did I do? did you understand anything!? )
-
ooww supper... ı understand ..it's easy..for example: I=ben you=sen he/she/ıt=o we=biz you=siz they=onlar I can do=yapabilirim I'll teach you turkish=Size türkçe öğreteceğim How did I do?=Nasıl yaptım? Did you understand anything?=Bişeyler anladınmı?
-
But the g with that upside down roof above it isn't really pronounced like a g, is it? For example, dag (=mountain?!) is pronounced dah. So how do we pronounce the things you teach us?
-
giss'm:

ok, if I=ben then why is there no "ben" in "yapabilirim"??? and if you=sen, why isn't there a "sen" in "Size türkçe öğreteceğim"??? :

Because Turkish is a difficult language. I imagine it's like in Latin where the conjugated version of the verb includes who does it. For example, the Latin word for "I" is ego, but "I see" translates into "video". The ending of the verb indicates it so you don't need to add the "ego".

OK! in fact, it's the same in Polish I = ja but I see = (ja) widzę you = ty but you see = (ty) widzisz I wouldn't have been able to learn Polish myslef if I hadn't been born Polish! I have my deepest respect for Christoph (Sergeant Pepper) to be trying to learn it
-
But I'm still making too many mistakes... Then again, it's getting better all the time... Yet another language to work with... Merhaba! Nasılsın!? Adım Christoph!
-
