Only A Northern Song:
Were we at the same Hampden Park? I thought The Long and Winding Road sounded very honest and real. I captured most of the song from where I was stood in AA7 (i'll upload it later tonight) and having just played it back, he sounded absolutely fine to me. This thing about Macca losing his pipes is getting to be a cliché now. When he's on, he's on and I hope a few more boardies can back me up on this because i'm forever deflecting criticism from ignorant work colleagues on this subject about his vocal prowess. Cut the guy some slack, he still sounds great when he's given his voice a rest between shows. Keep going Macca!
You're right! Age affects normal people but not Paul McCartney, he just gets better and better.

The Long And Winding Road was always one I thought I could skip live, but on Sunday night, I thought he sounded really great. I know he can be a bit shaky with that track, which was why I was really amazed by his performance. From Venus & Mars onwards I knew he was on top form, but with The Long And Winding Road I was really quite taken aback by just how good it was. His voice the entire night was probably the best I've heard him sounding in quite a while. Near faultless, I would say. I'm so glad I was there.

He was really good with that song, I thought he was a little shaky in London with it (from what I can remember!) but he pulled it off no problem on Sunday night. Tbh, I was just enjoying the song and staring at him sit at the piano like a lovesick puppy. ops: But it was a good vocal, and I've heard a few people say they can take or leave that song but they absolutely loved it when they heard it live.

Okay. You have to admit, at the end of the day McCartney's voice is still incredible. Absolutely incredible. Especially when you compare it to other old rockers like Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard. Their voices are completely gone. Yes McCartney has bad vocal days and great vocals days just like he did 40 years ago. I mean come on cut the guy some slack. Pretty much 75% of he setlist is vocally demanding. Like that high part in I've got a feeling? Jesus! And to play a show that is almost 3 hours (at 6 and still go for that top note in Helter Skelter? Come on! No, of course he doesn't always nail it but what singer does? Stop picking the dude apart. So he misses a notes every once in a while. So his voice might give out because he is tired or for whatever reason. How about some comments like, "how can this man have so much energy?", "did you know he's singing all these old tunes are still in the original keys?", "wow, McCartney rocked us showing no signs of fatigue for 3 hours straight!". What other musical performer currently in existence gives as much to their fans as McCartney? Do you see any 20 - 30 year old performers putting on 3 hour shows? Peace, Robbie And in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make.

Believe me, I understand And I guess I would have to say I am now one of those people. I was really impressed by it. I'm going to go and listen to it now

Macca's vocals through out the whole gig were excellent, would put many a young wannabe to shame, then again he has been doing that for years, lets not forget the man is 68 and from what i've been reading in forums and news papers, everyone who was at hampden has said its the best gig they have ever been to...

songs like 'the long and winding road' however reveal a voice just about holding it together and pretty painfull to listen too. im not being negative, im just being realistic.

Lazy, I was wondering how long it would be before you got back to your negativity. Really I dont know why you bother with Macca anymore, your vibes are always negative!
my posts have hardly been negative. but to be honest the likes of yourself are hardly worth discussing with. im just honest and basically you cant handle it. on the whole maccas singing was great especially considering his stage in life.infact on many rockier songs he still sounds fantastic. im not gonna pretend that he can still sing 'the long and winding road' well even if you would like me too. if you dont agree with me fine, but to question why i even bother to be a macca fan anymore basically validates my opinion that you infact are the one who 'cant see the trees for the forest'. if 'negative' equates 'honesty',then perhaps in your mind anyway i am negative.! personally it was the 7th time ive been to a macca concert and it was as good as any apart from liverpool 1990. i had a great time.my wife had a great time.it cost us a fortune and it was hard to leave the kids but worth every penny. it was a thrill once again to see the man who i have idolised my entire life and bought every single release. his voice can be a bit strained and ropey at times but it certainly does not detract from the amazing experiance of his live set. go and take your churlish remarks elsewhere!

as far as I know there's no-one singing rock and roll as good as Paul today... maybe I'm too iconic or whatever but sometimes I like young singers too... I think Adam Lambert is one of the best singers ever... but if you watch one of his live shows Adam starts not singing so well after half an hour. This is not about a 3 minute TV performance, it's about 3 hours of straight singing.

I've been searching youtube for video of hey tube so i can see my cushion! There's nothing very clear been posted yet. I wish it was this time last week so we still had the gig to look forward to! I'm still on a high and wish i could see him again! I hope he realised how much he's missed the scottish crowd and comes back to us soon!
I was in Block AA7 Row K and caught the end of Hey Jude on my camera. Just uploaded it to YouTube. Is this the cushion you were looking for?!
Hehe, that's the one! It brings a huge smile to my face. I couldn't believe it when the guy zoomed in on it and it stayed there! I'm easily pleased! I had a great weekend, and once again, was great to meet you guys from the forum. Thanks for helping make one of the best weekends ever. I wouldn't have been the same if i hadn't met you X

maybe there's someone out there singing with still better skill than Paul, to go through his setlist of 3 hours and all styles of singing... If someone knows someone like that, I'll surely give it a listen... besides the skill... he sings with lots of passion and feeling that being said... I think there's something strange happening to Paul when he sings TLAWR. I think he's because looking a lot at the piano, so he doesn't focus at vocals much. like here
that happens him in other piano songs and in Blackbird as he must look at the guitar in certain parts... and he never has "problems" while playing the bass IMO that's all that happens -

great words above and i totally agree with 'the jist of your letter'. however i do not believe mccartney will ever tour like this in the UK again.its the end of the line i would say. perhaps some american or world dates in the years that follow but with the possible exception of something special in liverpool or a charity do in london i believe its the end of the end for the UK. his voice is still strong for a 68 yrold and he pulls off an amazing show. however the mccartney melodic sweetness has all but gone from those pipes now and im sure he will wind down whilst hes still at the top of his game. the rockers by and large are no problem for him and indeed the solo accoustic stadium singalongs like yesterday are helped by the mass echo crowd participation. songs like 'the long and winding road' however reveal a voice just about holding it together and pretty painfull to listen too.im not being negative,im just being realistic. indeed one of my favourite experiances on sunday night was listening to the scottish crowd leave the gig in utter astonishment at what they had just witnessed. i heard one guy say to his mate. "paul, that was amazing.everything is forgiven.i think i just watched the best concert of my life easily". that was the kind of vibe at the end.the concert was a massive massive succsess.
IT REALLY ANNOYS BE ON HERE THAT ONE PERSONAL HONEST OPINION GETS PASTED OUT FROM A GLOWING POST I MAKE ABOUT THE CONCERT. does the fact that i think pauls voice cant handle a song like TLAWR detract from the concert??...no the concert was fantastic as i stated . even if his voice was on one of the so called 'off nights' it wouldnt have bothered me anyway..the whole live mccartney experiance is totally unbeatable by anyone.his song cannon is just too amazing to compete with. however do i rush out to be his live CDs these days..no[although i do buy them anyway for collective purposes] he puts on an unbeatable show but he used to be the best singer in rock and roll.now hes just good for his age!

Paul is great live and it is always enjoyable, His voice is amazing for his age, but one some songs it does show its age and although still enjoyable can be painful to hear. When you are there it sounds much better but songs like LAWR, My Love and even Blackbird and parts of Live and Let Die leave a lot to be desired especially when watched on TV. I remember when I heard that LAWR was to be used as a focal point for Live8 thinking "f**k!" as I knew it would not sound good on TV and I had been saying to all who would listen that Macca was on top form with his new album and live he was still great. LAWR meant that they just said 'his voice is shot'. That was a great lost opportunity really. But as LazyD said it is a minor point and should not really be blown out of all proportion. Many songs sound as good as ever, but some he should really not try anymore. He is still great, still fantastic live and still oh so cute!!
-
Paul is still a competent singer and i recorded TLAWR and to be fair after listening to it again its pretty good. The best vocalists in the world would struggle to put in a perfect performance for an hours and a half never mind three hours and thats in their prime. On top of that macca is playing an array of instruments and is singing on every song. The greatest vocalist in my view was Freddie Mercury but even he had a 20 minute break when Brian May did his thing! McCartney unlike others is more than just a vocalist. He is a musician of the very highest calibre and a national treasure! Long may he remain so and I don't expect him to retire for a while yet. He seems to be having too much fun!

thanks plastic. as ever it is you or moggy or audi or indeed dcbeatle who get the issue. today ive been told not for the first time on here that i should not even bother being a macca fan!,im too negative!. it took me by suprise because my macca batteries are well and truely recharged by his wonderfull performance the other night. as you said it dosent mean i now think he sings every song brilliantly or indeed that his voice is anywhere near what it was. i do offer the opinion however that it dosent really matter.his shows are still unbeatable without the flawless vocal ability he used to posesss! and he can still rock better than anyone out there!

Lazy, I'm with you on this too. You will have to go far and wide to find a show to equal that of Paul McCartney's. But the fact is that at 68 years old his voice is very different from when he was younger. This is just nature taking its course, it happens to everybody. This isn't a negative comment, its the truth, and even so, he puts on the best show I believe on earth. He is a great man and a terrific performer no matter what.

... [Vocally] When he's on, he's on ...
Last year's Halifax concert is clear proof that the voice still has its golden moments. That night's performance of "Helter Skelter" has replaced the Red Square DVD version as my favorite of all the live versions. Now, for the softer songs, Paul's transistions aren't quite on every night, but he can still belt out the rockers.

Lazy, I agree with almost everything you post on this board. I'm so sick of other people on here telling those of us who express anything other than praise for Paul to quit going to his shows. Did they just overlook your whole post and only pay attention to your opinion about the TLAWR? Seriously, gah! It amazes me how many people never fully read posts in the first place and then reply with something ridiculous. :

seriously thanks barb, audi and catain fantastic. you guys are great on here. and yes barb, thats exactly what happened. i wouldnt mind,i get painted as some kind of miserable anti macca man on here when in real life i find myself defending his every move to friends and workmates! in the last week alone ive had a few exchanges with work collegues who were not impressed with the clips that were shown of his 'isle of white' performance last week.! on here however im sure if you stated that his face looked a bit older than it did 20 years ago they would stick you in the naughty corner. by the way the concert was fantastic and paul was amazing.im sure i would have liked a few more tweaks to the set list but i dare not go there!. now im off to listen to 'the long and winding road' from tripping the live fantastic when he could still sing it with perfect vocals live!

Don't forget all your defending of Paul when the crazies took over the board for a week or two. I'm so happy you had a great time at the Macca show, and your pictures were awesome! I can feel the excitement just looking at them.

Yep. I felt like a kid in the '60s defending The Beatles. As if a tiger had been unleashed within me to defend our guy.
