I'm trying to get some information regarding the content Paul put out before Club Sandwich. From what I gather (and thanks to some help from JimmMcCullouchFan), newsletters were done from 73-74...then booklets before switching to Club Sandwich. Does anyone know how many editions were done? Anyone have them? Thanks!

There was an offer on the back of the Red Rose Speedway album to join the Wings Fun Club so that's how it got started

On joining the fun club in January 1974,my membership number was 2546 so i guess between 2000 & 3000 were being printed at that time. Returning the original posters question about the newsletters, I have 5 issues which were produced between April 1973 & March 1974. The first 4 issues were A4 sized but the single page final edition was a little smaller and was sent out after the change to the booklet issues had already been made. Amongst the news items in the very first newsletter (written by Claire),the following made me chuckle: 'As most of you will know, Paul's court case over his pot(ted) plants was on Wednesday March 8th. He was fined £100, which shouldn't break him!' The earliest reference I have to the 'Fun Club' is a standard letter sent out to fans who had made enquiries regarding the club. The letter I have was date stamped 12 FEB 1973 with a PO Box 3, Wirral, Cheshire L60 8QH postal address. The letter reads: Thank you for writing to me about the Wings Fun Club. Unfortunately the announcement was a little premature but I am keeping your name on file and as soon as applications are ready I will send you your form. Wings are delighted by your interest in the group and hope you will enjoy their new single "Hi Hi Hi" and "C moon". Meanwhile,I am returning your subscription and will be in touch with you again as soon as possible. The above was printed but in handwriting the letter ended with 'yours, Lucy'. By the time the first edition was published two months later, Lucy was gone, a move had been made to London and Claire (aka Clare) was running the show. The August (1973) issue was Claire's last and was co-written with new 'girl' Nicky. Within a year Nicky was being helped out by Sue, who was looking after the US club membership and ,after Nicky's departure, took over the running of the club until its closure following Linda's passing some 24 years later.

Do you know how many booklets were made? Not how many were printed, I mean how many issues, including the ones in my pictures. By the way, I have just obtained the August 1973 newsletter, which you said was Claire's last one. Does it look like yours?

Yes it does,it look identical with the same amount of pages etc. The first newsletter contained just two sheets and was headed 'PAUL McCARTNEY AND WINGS FAN CLUB'. They soon reverted back to the club being fun. The second newsletter was just a single sheet The third newsletter had four sheets, as did the fourth issue, which is the August newsletter that you have. This was the first issue to be actually dated. None of the newsletters were numbered so its a question of reading the content of each issue to determine what order they were issued in. The final fifth issue was a single sheet.....and only printed on one side at that. But by then the booklet issues were being produced. I don't know how many newsletters were printed but i suspect it must have been around the 1,000 mark........less for the early ones. Either way, forty years on, the original copies must be quite rare.

Thank you for the info, that's very interesting. And yes, I bet those five newsletter issues are very rare nowadays. By the way, I suppose you've got all the booklet issues in my pictures, so I'm curious: were there other booklet issues apart from those?

No, you do seem to have all the booklet issues published until the start of Club Sandwich in early 1977. What you don't appear to have though is the August 1976 Wing Fun Club Lyric Book Wings At The Speed Of Sound. This was booklet sized, featured all the lyrics for the album and accompanied the main August 1976 booklet issue. Incidentally the fifth newsletter (issued alone in 1974 in single sheet form) is not part of the main run as I had earlier assumed. Having now dug out all my old fun club newsletters/ booklets, I can see that the booklet with Paul & guitar on its cover (although unnumbered) is the fifth issue and was followed by No.6, with Linda,Denny & Paul on its cover. After that, each booklet was numbered followed by the year of issue, ie No 1 1974, No 2 1974, No 3 1974, No 1 1975 when the numbering system was dropped and replaced by month/year ie November 1975, March 1976, August 1976 and December 1976, which was the final booklet.

Is there a "Meet Jimmy McCulloch" feature in one of the 1974 Fun Clubs?

No there isn't. In issue No. 1 1974 there is a report on the recording of what was to become the McGear* album where Jimmy is briefly name checked as 'guitarist Jimmy McCullah. In issue No 2. 1974, which is mainly about Wings rehearsing and recording in Nashville, Jimmy isn't mentioned at all In issue No. 3 1974 there is a two page section which gives a brief profile of all five members of Wings plus there is also a four page interview....but that is with Geoff Britton. Jimmy's section reads as: JIMMY McCULLOCH - LEAD GUITAR Born: 4.6.53 Clydebank, Scotland Previous Band's: One in a Million, Thunderclap Newman, John Mayall's Band, Stone The Crows, Blue. Equipment: Gibson Firebird, semi-acoustic Gibson L5, two SG amplifiers, Fender Thinline, uses medium gauge strings. .
