Paul - GRAMMY 2013

So there's still a chance for KOTB in the regular telecast? (traditional pop)
-
Yea that hasn't been announced yet, I think. It should be televised.
-
Michelley:
Damn. The Woody Guthrie set just beat Ram for Best Boxed Set.
That is just wrong... it really is....

Nope. The traditional pop vocal album category (in which KOTB falls) is one the of categories due to be announced for the pre-telecast, according to a list I read on the Grammy's Web site.

my bad

Well, it's not as if Paul getting screwed by the Grammys is without precedent...

Damn. The Woody Guthrie set just beat Ram for Best Boxed Set. I bet Smile wins for Best Historical Album. Paul is a long shot given the long critical adoration of Brian Wilson's Smile album, while the love for Ram is recent.
That is just wrong... it really is....
Well Ram was really a long shot in the Best Historical Album category. Smile was always the front-runner because it's considered the Beach Boys' long lost "masterpiece." And Ram's reputation only turned around in the last 4 or 5 years and that's thanks to young critics -- not thanks to the old farts who make up most of the Grammy voters. And if someone besides Paul had to win in the Best Boxed set category, I'm glad it was Woody Guthrie rather than the Rolling Stones (for its lame-o Some Girls album). Now THAT would have pissed me off. I'm still bummed that my favorite album got passed over -- again. Even though to be bummed about this makes no sense as I'm on record on these boards for stating how stupid the Grammy awards are -- and how, historically, they always make the WRONG choice. I still wanted Ram to win, though.

True 'dat, homie.
-
By the way, I just saw on Twitter that Brian Wilson was at the Grammys in person to accept his award for Best Historical Album. It helps that he lives in LA. But that must have been a nice moment for him. Really, there was no way that -- given his long history of emotional problems and the long saga of the Smile sessions -- the Grammy voters were going to give that award to anyone but him. That said, I think that Ram is every bit the masterpiece that Smile is.

Well I'm also glad it was Woody Guthrie over the Rolling Stones... that one was poor in my mind as well. This is Woodie's boxed set.. This is the RAM boxed set In my mind, there's no comparison even. There was soooo much care put into this RAM boxed set... this pic doesn't even do it justice. For one, the reproduction of the Kodak film paper, even down to the tie on the back, was faithfully reproduced and then it contained glossy prints inside. The main book was like hand bound/stitched with an Indian motif on it. The paper envelope with the lyrics on it and inside it contained reproductions of hand written lyrics... with the children's drawings on them, or food stains... cross outs... they were from the original lyrics!!! That was priceless and brilliant!! Then the other booklet included photos and original photos and ideas for advertisements, a speaking billboard, album label ideas, and again Paul's and the children's drawings throughout, another small booklet of sheep and the CD's DVD. It is so authentic and brilliant, that I can only think that the oversight was due to either their not truly awarding it due to the merit of the actual boxed set, but instead they were looking at the fact that Woody Guthrie has passed on and he does have a legacy in folk music. I do understand about SMILE being the long lost masterpiece... I personally prefer RAM, but I do understand the decision with SMILE if it wins... Postdate: KOTB won!!! YAY So well deserved!!!

Seems like every time a hands-down, clear Macca contender is nominated, he's up against one of his peers or idols (Dylan, etc.)
-
Michelley:
Well, Woody Guthrie and Brian Wilson's Smile were the conventional choices, and the Grammy's usually make the conventional choice. I'm still irritated. An extra bit of publicity for Ram would have been nice and well deserved.
Jon Landau must be on the judging committee for the Grammys.
-
Smile is overrated for my tastes. There's a reason it was never fully released when it was conceived. Some good songs, but also a lot of pretentious garbage.
-
PAUL JUST WON A GRAMMY FOR KOTB!!!!!! OK, so he should have won for Ram, and half of you hate KOTB, but I'm among those who love it, so I'm happy to see it recognized.
-
SMiLE absolutely deserved to win, i'm so pleased for Brian. Come on now anyway Macca's got a million awards let Brian have this one!

I agree Smile deserved to win for Best Historical Album, maybe more than Ram did. But I do wish Ram had won for Best Boxed Set because i think Love2Travel is right: The Ram box set was beautifully put together. And I feel like all the people at MPL/Concord who worked so hard on it deserved some recognition for what was a tremendous set. Still happy about the Grammy for KOTB.

Irritates me that they didn't put those into the live show, Paul was the only reason I was gonna watch it
